Description

UNITED STATES PATENT wEsLEY eHAsE, oF BUFFALO, NEW vonk.
IMPROVED CAiVlVP-CHEST; AND TABLE COMBINED.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,570, dated October 29, lSGl.
To ctZZ w/wnt it may concern.-
Beit known that I, XVESLEY CHASE, of the city of Buffalo, county of Erie, and State of New York, havein vented a certain new and Improved Combined CampChest and Table; andIdo hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a perspective showing the chest as shut and the legs and extension-leaves folded thereon. Fig. 2 is a perspective, the several parts being' open and extended for a a table. Fig. 3 is an inside plan, chest open, leaves extended, showing also the manner of fastening and folding the legs to the extension-leaves. Figs. l and 5 are sections of the chest, showing a metallic corner-piece for fastening the leg to the chest; Figs. G and 7, sections of removable legs with metallic corner-pieces thereon, which combine with those in the corners of the chest for connecting the legs to the chest in order to convert the same into a table.
Letters of like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The chest proper is made in 'two parts Il and F and hinged together, as shown at g.
A and B are extension-leaves which are hinged to the chest, as shown at b', so that they may be folded upon the outside of the chest for transportation, as shown in Fig. l, and extended for an enlarged table, as shown in Fig. 2. Eachleaf has a hinged leg C, which maybe folded upon the leaf, as shown in Fig. 3, and dropped for supporting' the leaf for a table, as shown in Fig. 2.
The removable legs D are fastened upon the leaf A for transportation, so that when the leaves are folded upon the chest the removable and hinged legs will be upon the outside and serve as a protection to the chest as against bruising and rough usage. The removable legs are fastened upon the leaf A by means of the pins hin theirl ends catching into holes in the cleat 'L' and by the clamp formed by the hinged leg C and cross-piece C', so that when the leg is brought down to its place the cross-piece will clamp the removable legs and hold them firmly, as shown in Fig. 3. There is sufficient spring in the leg to allow it to bend out of line and pass into the open notch in the cleat and then spring into the transverse notch, as shown at C2, Fig. 3, and thereby hold the removable legs securely in place. secured in a similar manner, as shown at C3` Vhen folded, the leaves are upon opposite sides of the chest.
Metallic corn er-pieces J are used in the construction of the chest, four of which are for the twofold purpose of a device for connecting the removable legs to the chest and for strengthening the chest. Two of these are put on iush with the edge of the chest, as shown in Fig. l, a recess j being made in the wood behind for the reception ot' the cornerpiece J2 on the leg, and two are put on so as to project above the edge of the chest, as shown in Fig. 5, which projecting part will pass into the said recess when the two parts of the chest are shut together, and hence relieve the strain upon the lock and hinges and render the chest more strong and secure. The corner-pieces of the chest will pass inside of the corner-pieces on the legs when the legs are put into place to convert the chest into a table, so that the corner-pieces of the legs will respectively overlap the corner-pieces of the chest; also, when the legs are put in to form the table, the pins Z1. on the ends of the legs enter the holes L in the corners of the chest, and thereby a very strong and permanent connection of the legs to the table is effected. By reason of combining the extension-leaves A and B with the chest I double the size and capacityof the table at a trilling additional expense, and also by folding the leaves and legs upon the outside I not only protect the chest from breaking or bruising, but also save all of the room inside for table and camp-furniture.
The manner of fastening the legs to the chest is cheap, convenient, and strong.
At 7o is shown a hinged strap and staple for locking the chest.
At Z is represented a hook, and atm an eye by which the leaves A and B are held down when folded upon the chest.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of extension-leaves A B, one or both, and hinged legs C, for sup- The leg of the leaf B is porting lche leaves when extended, vwith "a 3.
