The Patent N0. 324,928, f C. W. Fillmore, shows a hub provided with a series of retaining-bars, lying between the spoke-rnortises, and held in rigid conneetion With the hub by means 0f 'DWO retaining and eneireling bands, separated loy a consiclerable spaee fr0rn the ends 01 t-he spoke-mortises. The constrnetion shown in that; patent provided the edges 0f each spoke with a bearing wholly 0f w0od, thus insnring an elasticity which a 1netal bearing againsl: the edge 0f the spoke cannot give. In wheels of a certain dass and grade the elasticity thns secured is valuable and almost essential; bub the're are on the obher band a large dass 0f wheels in which elasticity is n0b desirable, hub strength, stiffness, and rigidity are the prineipal reqnirements. F0r wheels of t-he last-named dass, Ehe eonstrucbion shown herein (so far as the same consists in placing he eneircling bands B in eontact with rhe edges 0f thespokes) is preferable to th at show n in Ehe patent referred t0.

In O. WV. Fillnxores Patent N0. 126,278 a hub is shown in whieh a series of retainingbars lie between the spokes, and are held in place by flangecl bands whieh encirele the hub and the ends 0f the retaining-bars, the flanges of Ehe bands being in contaeb with the edges 0t the spokes. The constrnet-ion sh0wn in bhab patent differs from that: sh0wn herein in many partieulars, bnlaespeeially in the fach that those part's 0fthe retaining-bars which lie between olne spokes are not in elose0ontaet therewit-h, bnu are separatecl therefrom by spaces snificient for the admission of moistnre and the lodgmens of extraneous matter. Having now deseribed and explained my invention, what I claim as new, and desire 130 secnre by Letters Patenb, is-
l. The cornbination, with a wooden hub, 0f a series 0f spokes sei: therein, a series 0f metal. retainingbars lying between and in elose coutacb with seid spokes, and having' their ends embedded in the hub 0n opposite sides of the series ofspokes, and two metal bands eneireling the hub and nhe ends 0f bhe reaining-b2ir and in contaeb wibh the edges 0f ehe spokes.
2. 'lhe eornbinatioxi, with a wooden hub, 0f a series of s p0kes seb berein, a series 0f metal ret-aining-bars between ancl in elose eontact With said spokes, and having their ends embeclded in the hub on opposite sides of the series 0f spokes, two mebzil bands encircling the hub and the ends of the retaining-bars, and in contact With the edges 0f the spokes, and meal plates lying bet-ween the'spokes and superpos ed up0n bhe bare, and having a thiekness approximately tl1e same as thab of Ehe bands.
3. The combination, with the wooden hub A, the series of spol es sei; berein, and the bands B, encireling the hub and in eontaeb Wil;h the edges 0f Ehe spokes, of the series 0f retainingbars between and in elose eontact therewibh, and having their ends embeddecl in the hub wibhin the bands B, each of seid bars having an integrally-formed cenbral plabe, D", 0f the approxi nnate ohiekness 0f the bands B, substantially as shown and described, and f0r the purpose Set; forlsh.
4. 'lhe combinabion, with the hub A and the spokes Set therein and widesb ab the Lenonshoulder, 0f the retaining-bars D between 5 said spokes, and adapted to prevent; the Withdrawal'thereof fron1 ehe hub, ancl means, subsbanbially as shown and describecl, f0r holding said bare in eonnection with the hub.
