Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MOSES T. RIDOUT, OF MILW'AUKEE, \VISOONSIN.
IMPROVED BOOT-JACK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,543, dated October 22, 1861.
.To aZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MosEs '1. Rumor, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boot-Jacks; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention, showing the under side of a bootjack. Fig. 2 is a section of one of the jaws.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures. V
My invention consists in a new and useful improvement in boot-jacks, by which I am enabled to adjust the same by means of the teeth and toe-piece hereinafter described to fit any sized boot, and which holds the boots and allows them to be drawn with ease and facility.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to de scribe its construction and operation.
A A are the jaws, marked on their upper side with the number or size of the boots and on their lower sides provided With'ratchetteeth a, which may be made of any suitable material and securely attached thereto, or, if desired, the boot-jack may be made of metal with the teeth cast upon it.
0 is a toe-piece formed with sockets inclosing the jaws A and beveled on its back surface, so as to firmly hold the toe of the boot when being drawn from the foot.
0 is a tooth projecting upward from the lower part of the toe-piece, so as to allow it to be adjusted at any size and keep the same from slipping while the boot is being drawn off.
a is a shoulder projecting inward from each of the jaws to limit the backward motion of the toe-piece.
D is the block or rest which supports the jaws at a proper distance from the floor.
The operation is as-follows: One foot being placed upon the jack, the other toe is in serted between the jaws and beneath the toepiece, which moves forward freely until the heel passes between the jaws at back. An upward pressure then instantly locks thetoepiece by means of the teeth 0 and a, and the boot is readily drawn from the foot, after which the toe-piece is moved forward and the boot taken out.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the toothed jaws A A a and sliding toe-piece O c, constructed and operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
MOSES T. RIDOUT.
