To (LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J Aims ORIORDAN, of Ulster, in the county of Ulster and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gar-Couplings; and I hereby declare the following to be a full and clear description thereof.
The object of this invention is to constructa car-coupling in such a manner as to makeit a IO self-coupler, and at the same time permit the use of the coupling-links hitherto in common use.
The invention consists in forming a drawhead with a couplinglink, somewhat in U I5 form, and having its open end pivoted to the sides of the draw-head, thus making the closed end of the link capable of moving pendulously in a vertical direction and rendering it capable of striking and riding upon an inclined 2o plane on the opposite draw-head, so as to permit it to couple automatically therewith.
Detail features of the invention are fully explained in the subjoined specification.
The invention will be readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, of
which Figure l is an elevation in perspective of the improved coupling. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a general plan 0 of same.
The draw-head A has a T-shaped head, a, formed upon its extreme outer or projecting end. This T- shaped head projects about equally on each side of the draw head, and
5 forms shelves or rests for the free end of the link to rest upon, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Thelink B is made somewhat in U form,and is pivoted to the sides of the draw-head at b, as is clearly shown in the drawings, and this per- 0 mits the free end of the said link a pendulous movement in a vertical direction, as is shown by the full and dotted lines in Fig. 2. The front end of the draw-bar carries a couplinglug, A, over which the coupling-link B of the adjoining car is engaged when two cars are coupled together. This coupling lug A is placed with a space, a, intervening between its rear face, a", and the shoulder or abutting face aflwhich forms the top part of the notched ends of the draw-bar, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2. The front end of the lug A is made sloping in the form of an inclined plane, as is also shown best in Fig. 2. This inclined plane a is made lowest at the front or advanced end of the draw-bar, and slopes thence upwardly to the top of the said lug A. The rear face, c of the lug A is made convex, as is shown in Fig. 3, and the convexity of this part of the lug is made to coincide with and fit the inside of the free end of the link B of the adjoining car, the said links and the faces a of these couplings being each conformed to the other in this respect. The width of the lug A is such as to permit it to easily enter between the sides of the link B, when the latter is thrown overit, and for this purpose the width of the lugs is a trifle less than the width of the draw-bar at the point where the pivot b engages it. The top end of the lug A is a little lower than the top of the abutting face if, so as to allow the link to rise up on the in clined plane a to the top of the said lug A. then strike the abutting-lace a",and drop down into the notch a", behind the bearing-face a of the said coupling-lug A. A lever, O, pivoted at c, to the side of the draw-head, has an upwardly-extending handle, 0, by which the operator can grasp and manipulate it, and a lateral arm extending parallel or nearly parallel with the link B, and with a lug or arm, 0 extending under and partly embracing the side of the link B, as is clearly shown, so that by moving the lever-handle 0, as required, the links may be raised and uncoupled by the lifting-arm G c, as is indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2. The link B is pivoted to the draw-bar A in such a position that when it rests on the ledges a of the T-shaped head of the draw-bar the front or free end of the link is slightly elevated above a horizontal plane, cutting the pivot-pin b, as is clearly shown in Fig. 2. The object of this arrangement is to elevate the front end of the link, so that it is capable of striking on the inclined face a, and slide up thereon, and then drop over the coupling-lug A of an adjacent coupling on another 5 car.
