Description

(No ModeL) J. E. MITCHELL. DEVICE FOR RAISING BARRELS.
No. 335,373. Patented Feb. 2, 1886.
- WITJvEssEs J IJV'V'EJVTOR' flawm I JOHN E. MITCHELL, OF FOIVLER, INDIANA.
DEViCE FOR RAISING BARRELS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 310,335,376, dated February 2,1886.
Application filed December 23, [Si-Fl. Serial No. 1.865%. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JOHN E. lllrrcamm, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Fowler, in the county of Benton and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Raising Barrels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a side view showing my improved device for raising barrels and similar articles ready to be raised. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the device raised. Fig. 3 is a top View of the device folded down, and Figs. 4 and 5 are side views of slight modifications of the device.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to devices for raising barrels or similar heavy objects from the ground to a bench or platform; audit consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of the same, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In stores and warehouses a number of men are often required to raise heavy barrels or other articles from the floor to a bench or platform, and in lifting the said barrels or other objects they are often damaged and the contents wasted, as well as also a number of men are required to lift them, rendering the handling of such objects expensive and lengthy. For the purpose of avoiding this and to produce a device which will enable one man to raise a weight which would require a number of men to handle, and which at the same time will be inexpensive and easily manufactured, as well as not liable to get out of order, I construct the device, which I shall now proceed to describe.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A indicate two parallel sills, which may be mounted on rollers or casters, if desired, to make the device portable. Two levers, B B,
are pivoted at their lower ends, near the forward ends of the sills or skids, and are connected at their upper ends by a handle,
C, by means of which they may be manipulated. A short distance from the lower ends of these levers they are pivoted to two longitudinal bars, l),whieh are connected by means of cross-pieces It E upon their upper edges, the levers being pivoted to the bars near their forward ends, and the rear ends of the bars are supported by two arms, F, which are pivoted at their lower ends to the sills and at their upper ends to the rear ends of the bars, being parallel to the levers. The sills are coir nected at their upper edges by a cross-piece or block, G, which supports the rear crosspiece of the elevating-platform when the lat ter is lowered. The pivotal bolts H, which pivot the arms to the sills and to the side bars of the platform, are inserted through apcrtu res which are at opposite sides of the central line of the arms, at the opposite ends of the same, so as to prevent splitting of the arms or a strain directly on the center line of the arms. The forward ends of the side pieces of the platform are cut away at the under side, so as to enable the said ends to rest upon the edge of the platform or bench upon which the barrel or other article is to be placed. In some cases itmay be desirable to have the lever at one side removed, and in this case the lever is secured at its lower end to an L-shaped rockshaft and arm, I J, which may be journaled in transverse hearings in the sills, and which may have its arm project at the other side of the platform parallel with the lever and pivoted to the side of the platform in the same manner, as shown in Fig. 4. In other cases it may be desirable to have the platform better supported than by the levers and one pair of arms, and in this case, as shown in Fig. 5, the arms are pivoted at the ends of the platform and the levers pivoted to the middle of the platform, and preferably connected by means of a rock-shaft.
For the purpose of easier transport the levers may consist of the lower portions, K, as shown in Fig. 5, which are pivoted to the platform, and upper removable and insertible han dles, L, which fit with their lower ends into sockets in the upper ends ofthe lower portions; or the upper port-ions may be made detachable and insertible by any other suitable means.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- 1. In a device for raising barrels or similar articles, the combination of two sills, a platform, parallel arms pivoted to the sills and to the platform at their ends, and levers pivoted at their lower ends to the sills and to the platform parallel to the arms, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
2. In a device for raising barrels or similar articles, the combination oftwo sills, a platform, parallel arms pivoted to the sills and to the platform, and having the pivotal bolts pass- 1ng through perforations at opposite sides of the central line of the arms at opposite ends of the same, and levers pivoted to the sills and to the platform parallel with the arms, as and for the purpose shlWD and set forth.
3. In a device for raising barrels and similar 20 articles, the combination of two parallel sills connected by a cross-piece, a platform consisting of side pieces and cross-pieces secured to their upper edges, one of the said cross-pieces registering with the cross-piece of the sills, two arms pivoted at their ends to the sills and to the platform having their pivotal bolts passing through perforations at opposite sides of the central lines at opposite ends of the arms, and two levers pivoted at their lower ends to the sills and near the said ends to the platform parallel with the arms, and having a handle connecting their upper ends, as and for the purpose shown and set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN E. MITCHELL.
