SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,349. dated February 2, 1886.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ORVELLAS H. GILBERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex-and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Knobs and Escutcheons; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon,which form apart of this specification.

The object of this invention is to provide door-furnitureviz., door-handles, escutcheons, &c.of improved construction, whereby the parts thereof are held more firmly together, can be adapted to differing circumstances, as described hereinafter, and also manufactured more economically.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of the various parts thereof, substantially as illustrated in the drawings and described and claimed hereinafter.

As shown in the drawings, embodied in two sheets, Figure l is a plan of the under side of the escutcheon. Fig. 2 is a section taken through line w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan of a portion of the escutcheon. Figs. 4, 5, and 6 are respectively a plan, side, and end elevation of the reversible plate; and Fig. 7 is a plan of the nut-lock5 and Fig. 8 is a longitudinal section of Fig. 1 through the escutcheon, rose-plate, 8:0.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each of the figures.

In carrying out my invention I cast the escutcheou A, rose B, and shank 0 preferably in one piece, substantially as illustrated. In the depression D, formed by the rose, I provide two slots, 1) b--one on opposite sides of the bolt-hole d-placed, preferably, as indicated more particularly in Fig. 3, in which, as will be noticed, the slots are not in a line, so that the latch-levers on opposite sides of the door will not interfere. IVithin the depression D,

I arrange a reversible plate, E, having a central depression, 6, adapted to receive a nut and nut-lock with a slot, e, on one side thereof and a recess or depression, e*, on the opposite side, said recess and slot corresponding with the slots 1) b in the depression D, the said plate being adapted to be reversed, so that the recess e of said plate will rest in the slot 1) in the rose and the slot 6' correspond with the slot b, or vice versa.

Extending through the knob F, shank, hole d in the rose, and the perforation in the plate E is a bolt, G, provided with anut, g, on the inner end thereof, which holds all the several parts firmly together. A washer, S, is arranged on the squared end of the shank, having lugs s extendinginto the knob, which prevents the said knob from turning on the bolt. To hold the nut in position and prevent its loosening, I arrange between the nut and the bottom of the depression 6 a plate, H, having an arm, h, which projects into the recess e, and thereby prevents said plate from turning. The plate is then turned up on one side against the nut g, as shown in Fig. 1, holding the same iinmovably. Each side of the slot 6 is provided with downwardly-projecting lugs 6 perforated, as shown in Fig. 5, or slotted, as in Fig. 2, to receive a pin, j, upon the finger piece or lever J, which is arranged within the slot 6, as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. The use of this lever is set forth in a previous patent granted to me May 30, 1876, numbered 177,933, being employed in operating certain locking mechanism.

The object of having the reversible plate is, that the lever can be changed from right to left, as desirable, and secured upon the door without necessitating any special change in construction, the furniture being adapted to be arranged either upon the right or left side of the door. The recess e serves to fill up either of the slots bb when the lever is in one of them, presenting a smooth surface at the outside, and also provides a recess for the reception of the arm h of the nut-lock.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-

1. In door-furniture, the combination, with a roseplate provided with slots therein, of a reversible plate adapted to hold a latch-actuating lever in pivotal relation therewith, said lever extending through either of the slots in said rose-plate, for the purpose set forth.

2. In door-furniture, the combination, with a rose-plate provided with a slot on each side of the shank, of a reversible plate adapted to close up one of the slots in the rose-plate and to hold a latch-actuating lever extending through the other of said slots in the roseplate in pivotal relation with the said reversible plate, for the purposes set forth.

3. In door-furniture, in combination, a slotted rose-plate and knob-shank cast integrally, a knob, a reversible plate adapted to hold a lever extending through a slot in said roseplate in pivotal relation therewith, a latchactuating lever, a bolt passing through said knob, knob shank, rose, and reversible plate, and a nut-lock arranged in Connection with the bolt and nut and adapted to be turned up against said nut, for the purposes set forth.

4. In door-furniture, in combination, aslotted rose-plate and knob-shank cast integrally, a knob, a reversible plate having a depressed portion,"e adapted to close one of the slots in the rose-plate, and a slot corresponding with the other slot in the said rose-plate, having lugs e on each side thereof, a latch-actuating lever pivotally arranged in the slot in the reversible plate, as set forth, and extending being arranged and operating for the purpose herein set forth.

5. In door-furniture, the combination, with a knob, knob-shank, bolt, and nut, arranged substantially as herein specified, of a nut-lock, for the purposes herein set forth.

6. The combination, in door-furniture,witl1 a knob, knob-shank, bolt, and nut, of a nutlock having abolt-perforation therein and an arm, and adapted to be turned up against the nut, for the purpose specified.
