(Cl. 30-41) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A safety razor having means incorporated therein for distributing a fluid lubricant, such as water, to the face of the shaver during use of the latter. The fluid distributing means is contained in and expelled from a cylinder having a spring-pressed plunger, the fluid-expelling action of the plunger being controlled by means operable by the hand which holds the razor during use. The plunger is retractable for filling the cylinder with fluid by windable cable means entirely self-contained within the cylinder, while the means for releasing the plunger for movement under the influence of its spring is disposed externally of the cylinder at a point convenient for manipulation by the hand of the person using the razor. The razor head is provided with means for distributing the fluid uniformly along the length of the razor blade edge and for sealing the head against outflow of fluid therefrom when the plunger is secured in an at rest position.
This invention relates generally to safety razors and more particularly to certain improvements upon my previously patented construction of safety razor, United States Patent No. 3,139,683, granted July 7, 1964, having means incorporated therein for maintaining in moist condition the surface of the skin being shaved.
Among the principal objects of the present invention is the provision in the handle of the razor or as a part of the handle of fluid pressure cylinder which is operative automatically through manipulation by the hand holding the razor while in use to continuously supply to the face a fluid lubricant such as water, immediately in front of the cutting edge of the razor during the shaving operation, which cylinder includes a spring-pressed plunger which is retractable against its spring pressure by cable means contained entirely within the cylinder and is releasable for fluid-expelling movement under control of means operable externally of the cylinder.
An important objective of the invention is to provide the razor with a reservoir which holds an adequate supply of the lubricant for a complete shave and from which the lubricant is released under control of the user of the razor in quantity as desired to maintain the face adequately and properly moistened during the whole of the shaving operation.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a fluid pressure cylinder which may be conveniently held in the hand of the user as a handle for the razor and which is provided with means easily manipulatable by the shaver as he performs the shaving operation to release controlled amounts of the lubricant from the supply cylinder to the face.
A still further object of this invention is to provide a safety razor with a fluid lubricant receiver which is readily refillable with fluid and from which the fluid is controllably released as required by the user during the shaving operation for application to the face immediately in advance of the cutting edge of the razor blade and without regard to how the razor is held against the face being shaved and without requiring any change in the razor-holding position of the hand from that normally employed for shaving with a conventional safety razor.
Other objects and features of the invention, and the advantages thereof, will be apparent hereinafter, it being understood that the present invention consists in the combination, construction, location and relative arrangement of parts, as described in detail in the following specification, as shown in the accompanying drawings and as finally pointed out in the appended claims.

In the several figures, like elements are denoted by like reference numerals.
The present invention is applicable to and may be incorporated in any of several different safety razors of conventional type presently on the market, such razors being of the double edged blade type as shown in FIG- URE 1, the single edged blade type as shown in FIGURE 11 and the more recent type of razor, now being marketed by the Gillette Safety Razor Company, wherein a rolledup length of narrow strip steel sharpened along one longitudinal edge and contained in a cartridge removably fitted in the head of the razor may have successive lengths along thereof advanced into shaving position, this last-mentioned type of razor being illustrated in FIGURES 12 to 15.
In all of these different types of safety razors the fluid lubricant reservoir of the present invention, designated generally by the reference numeral 10, is built into the razor as a part or extension of its handle, the reservoir being connected to the shaving head by suitable conduit 'means through which the fluid is conveyed for uniformly distributed application to the face along the full length of the blade shaving edge during the shaving operation.
While in the various constructions of razors as illustrated in the drawings, the fluid reservoir is shown in each instance as being attached to the razor handle as an extension thereof, it is to be understood that in certain instances, if desired, the reservoir may be coupled directly to the head of the razor and thus serve in and of itself as the handle for the razor.
Whether or not the reservoir is coupled to the existing handle of the razor or directly to the razor head, the fluid expelled from the cylinder is conducted therefrom to and through the shaving head of the razor substantially in the manner and by the means described in my above mentioned prior Patent No. 3,139,683.
The reservoir 10, as best shown in FIGURES l to 3, which is in the form of a hollow, relatively elongated container of cylindrical form, comprises a main cylinder 11 the upper end of which is threaded, as at 12, to removably receive a top closure member 13, while the bottom end thereof is internally threaded, as at 14, to removably receive a bottom closure member 15.
Fitted within the interior of the cylinder 11 is a piston member 16 which is normally biased toward the top wall of the cylinder by a compression spring 17 acting between an annular shoulder 18 formed in the internal wall of the cylinder 11 and the back face of the piston member 16. The piston member 16 is provided with suitable sealing rings 19 to form a sealed chamber 20 for receiving the fluid lubricant and from which the lubricant may be expressed to and through the shaver head during the shaving operation.
The top closure member 13 of the reservoir 11 is provided With a vertically projecting annular member 21 forming a socket for snugly receiving the lower extremity of the safety razor handle, such as the handle 22 of the double edged razor shown in FIGURE 1, the handle 23 of the single edged razor shown in FIGURE 11 or the handle 24 of the hand blade type of razor shown in FIG- URE 12. In each instance the conventional razor handle may be shortened or otherwise modified as desired to receive the reservoir as an extension thereof, or the reservoir may itself be coupled directly to the shaving head of the razor so that it in itself constitutes the razor handle.
The top closure member 13 of the reservoir is apertured, as at 25, to provide a port for discharge of the fluid from the chamber 20 under pressure of the piston 16, which discharge port 25 communicates with the head of the razor by and through suitable fluid conduit means such as are described in my hereinbefore mentioned Patent No. 3,139,683.
Thus, in the double edged type of razor shown in FIG- URES 1 to 5, the fluid chamber 20 is in communication with fluid distributing manifolds 26 respectively disposed immediately beneath the outer longitudinally extending edges of the blade guards 27 by way of the passage 28 provided within the handle 22. The communicating passages between the reservoir discharge port 25 and the fluid distributing manifolds, as well as the system for uniformly distributing the fluid to and upon the face immediately in front of the cutting edges of the blade so as to adequately lubricate the surface of the skin about to be shaved, are described in detail in my above mentioned prior patent, the disclosure of which is included herein by reference.
The piston 16 is adapted to be retracted against the opposing force of the spring 16 by operation of a winchtype cable system which is built into the bottom end of the reservoir 10, and is operated by readily accessible means arranged externally of the reservoir. Thus, referring more particularly to FIGURE 2, the lower end of the cylinder 11 in the region below the compression spring 17 is fitted with an internal shaft 29 which extends diametrically across the cylinder and has its opposite ends journalled, as at 30 and 31, for free rotation about the longitudinal axis of the shaft.
Keyed to the shaft 29 is a bevel gear 32, which gear is adapted to mesh with a second bevel gear 33 rotatably mounted upon the bottom closure member 15 of the cylinder 11. This second bevel gear 33 is preferably keyed, as by a pin 34, to a central shaft 35 extending vertically through and rotatable freely with respect to the closure member 15, the shaft 35 being of a length such that it projects freely beyond the member 15.
Fitted upon the bottom end of the cylinder 11 is a cup-shaped disk 36 having an annular flange 37 which embraces the cylindrical bottom end portion of the cylinder 11 and a centrally apertured hub portion 38 which embraces the downwardly projecting end of the shaft 35 of the bevel gear 33. A pin 39 removably projected through the hub portion 38 of the disk 36 and the shaft 35 secure the disk 36 and the haft 35 together for rotation as a unit about the vertical axis of the shaft 35. Since the bevel gear 33 is of larger diameter than the shaft 35 there is provided at the inner side of the member 15 a shoulder, as at 40, which coacts with the disk 36 at the outer side of said member 15, to prevent axial shifting of the gear 33 relatively to its coacting gear 32. The gear 33, which is revoluble about its vertical axis is operative to effect rotation of the entrained gear 32 and the shaft 29 to which said gear 32 is keyed.
A flexible cable 41 extends between the piston 16 and the revoluble shaft 29 with its opposite ends suitable secured, as at 42 and 43, to said piston and said shaft. The length of the cable is preferably such that when the piston is thrust forwardly in the cylinder to its maximum extent under the force exerted by the coiled compression spring 17, several turns of the cable are wrapped about the shaft 29. Thereupon, upon rotating the endmost disc member 36 in clockwise direction, as indicated by the arrow in FIGURE 2, the meshed gears 32 and 33 operate to in turn rotate the shaft 29 in the direction indicated by its arrow in said FIGURE 2, to wind the cable about the shaft and so draw the piston downwardly in the cylinder against the effort of the spring. When the piston has been so drawn downwardly in the cylinder to its maximum extent the chamber 20 in the outer end of the cylinder 11 is of maximum capacity to receive therein a supply of lubricant adequate in volume to lubricate the shavers face during a given shaving operation.
The fluid lubricant is introduced into the chamber 20 through an upstanding fill tube 44 formed as an integral part of the top closure member 13, which fill tube is normally maintained closed to atmosphere by a suitable clo sure cap 45.
It will be appreciated, of course, that suitable means must be provided to prevent uncontrolled outward shifting of the piston 16 under the influence of the spring 17 and so insure a gradual expulsion of the liquid from the chamber 20 to effectively lubricate the shavers face as he performs his shaving operation. To this end, the cylinder 11 of the reservoir is provided along one side thereof with marginally operable detent means, designated generally by the reference numeral 46, which is manipulatable by the hand of the person holding the razor during the shaving operation to engage and hold the disc 36 against uncontrolled counterclockwise rotation thereof and corresponding revolution of the cable shaft 29 for fluid expelling motion of the piston 16 under influence of its spring 17.
This detent means 46 includes an elongated relatively narrow member 47 which is guided for vertical shifting movement within a pair of suitably channeled vertically spaced supports 48 and 49 respectively secured to the cylinder 11. Preferably, the bottom support 49 is in the form of an annular ring the lower edge 50 of which serves as an abutment or bearing surface adapted to be engaged by the upper edge of the revoluble disc 36. The lower end of the vertically shiftable member 47 is pointed, as at 51, for reception within any one of a number of circumferentially spaced V-shaped notches 52 formed in the upper edge of the disk 36. Thus, it will be apparent that when the detent member 47 is shifted downwardly so that its pointed extremity 51 is seated in one of the notches 52, the disc 36 will be held against rotation and the piston 16 will be held stationary in position within its cylinder. To facilitate shifting of the detent 47 into and out of engagement with the disc 36, its upper end is fitted with a fingerengaging knob 53. Also, to prevent unintentional vertical displacement of the detent member 47, a bowed leaf spring 54 suitably fitted between the channeled supports 48 and 49 is preferably provided, its function being to press the detent against the outer wall surface of the piston cylinder with suflicient force to frictionally hold the detent in its raised or lowered position. Since the travel of the detent 47 is relatively small, it being only such as to seat its pointed end 51 in and unseat it from any one of the notches 52, the upper support 48 is suitably slotted, as at 55, to permit projection therethrough of the detent knob 54 and limit its movement to the extent required.
In order to provide the razor with a support by means of which it may be rested upon a flat surface with its handle extending vertically and its shaving head held uppermost, the bottom end of the cylinder 16 may be fitted with a flat circular plate 56 which is centrally apertured, as at 57, to snugly fit over the downwardly projecting hub part 38 of the revoluble disc 36.
As has been previously indicated, it will be appreciated than when the piston is fully retracted by rotating the disc 36 to thereby wind up the cable 41 upon the shaft 29, a full supply of fluid, such as water or any suitable liquid skin lubricant, may be introduced into the chamber 20. During this filling operation, the detent 47 will of course be depressed to engage its pointed end in a notch 52 of the disc 36 to hold the latter secure against rotation, and thus hold the piston in its fully retracted position.
When now during the course of shaving it is desired to lubricate the surface of the skin about to be shaved, it is only necessary for the person using the razor to raise the detent 47 out of engagement with the notched rim of the disc 36 whereupon the latter is free to rotate and so permit the wound-up cable 41 to be played out as the piston 16 is forced in fluid-expelling direction under the pressure exerted by the compression spring 17. The piston thus expels fluid from the chamber 20 to and through the fluid distributing manifold in the razor head, the degree of fluid expulsion being under direct control of the razor user for lubricating the skin during the shaving operation. In this connection it is to be observed that the outward discharge of the lubricant from the chamber 20 by means of the cylinder piston 16 is readily effected and controlled by the userof the razor without any need on his part to change the normal manner of holding the razor in the hand for shaving purposes. Should it be desired at any time during the shaving operation or immediately prior to or after a shaving stroke to stop the supply of lubricant expelled from the chamber 20, it is merely necessary for the shaver to depress the detent 47 for engagement of its pointed end in one of the notches 52 of the rotating disc 36 whereby to interrupt further rotation thereof and thus hold stationary the piston 16 within its cylinder. Should it thereafter be desired to supply lubricant to the face, the
detent is disengaged from the disc 36 whereupon the piston 16, under pressure of the spring 17, is again free to shift toward the liquid discharge end of the cylinder chamber 20 and thereby expel under positive pressure fluid from such chamber for delivery to and from the razor head on to the skin to be lubricated as the shaving operation is being performed.
In order to prevent possible leakage of the lubricant from the distributing manifolds 26, as by gravity flow should the razor be inverted, the manifolds each may be provided with a slidable cover such as is most clearly and is held in overlying relation to said guard member by wire bails 60-60 or other suitable means which permit sliding movement of the cover member 58 relatively to the guard member. The slidable cover member is provided With a plurality of apertures 61 which correspond in longitudinal spacing with the spacing of the fluid discharge apertures 62 formed in the edge portion 59 the blade guard 27.
Normally, the cover member 58 is shifted in position, as shown in FIGURE 9, to present its apertures 61 in registry with those of the associated blade guard and the fluid distributing manifold. When, however, the cover member 58 is shifted into its position as shown in FIG- URE 9, so as to present its apertures 61 out of registry with the fluid discharge apertures, the latter are effectively closed against discharge of fluid from the razor head even should the razor being held in inverted position. To facilitate shifting of the cover member 58 into one or the other of its positions shown in FIGURES 9 and 10, it is preferably provided with finger-actuating lugs 63-63, one at each end of the member 58.
FIGURE 11 is illustrative of a safety razor of the singleedge blade type having a handle part 23 to which is fitted the fluid reservoir 10 of the present invention as described in connection with the double-edged blade type of razor illustrated in FIGURE 1. The fluid discharge port 25 of the reservoir is in this instance connected to the fluid distributing manifold 65 secured beneath the underside of the blade edge guard 66 by a tube 67 extending upwardly along the handle part 23 and turned suitably for connection at its outer end to the manifold inlet 68.
FIGURES 12 to 17 illustrate application of the reservoir 10 of the present invention to still another type of safety razor, manufactured and sold by the Gillette Safety Razor Company as its Techmatic razor, wherein the blade 69 is in the form of a continuous strip of steel having one of its longitudinal edges sharpened to provide a cutting edge. This band-type blade 69 is contained in coiled form within a cartridge 70 which is readily removable from the main supporting body 71 for replacement by another such blade-containing cartridge, the cartridge being locked operatively in position by suitable latching device 72. Successive lengths of the strip steel razor band 69 may be uncoiled from its reel in the cartridge 70 to extend across the length of the shaving head with its cutting edge disposed immediately beneath and in parallel relation to the top plate or blade guard 74. A rotatable lever 75 on the back side of the cartridge-supporting body 71, suitably keyed to the blade reel in the cartridge, is operative to present a new shaving edge in position upon each complete turn of the lever 75.
As in the previously described types of safety razors, the fluid eXpelling reservoir of the present invention is readily adapted to be incorporated in this band-blade type of razor by simple modification of the handle 24 thereof to snugly accommodate and secure it within the top socket of the reservoir so that the discharge port thereof may communicate with the head of the razor by way of a tube 76 extending upwardly along or within the handle 24 and connected to a fluid distributing manifold 77. In this type of razor the manifold may be formed by the provision of a bore 78 in the top plate or guard member 74 of the razor, as see FIGURES 16 and 17. The manifold so discharged from the razor head for application to the skin during the shaving operation courses over the top surface of the razor blade rather than under the bottom surface of the blade, as in the razor constructions of FIGURES 1 and 4.
As in the construction of the razor shown in FIGURE 1, the fluid distributing manifold in each of the different types of safety razors may be provided with a cover to seal off as desired the discharge apertures of the fluid distributing manifold and so prevent undesired leakage of the fluid from the razor head.
While the fluid reservoir of the present invention has been described and illustrated as applied to a safety razor for automatically supplying as desired during the shaving operation a controlled supply of fluid, e.g., water or any desired liquid skin freshener or lotion, to facilitate the shaving operation, it is to be understood that the fluid reservoir per se is adapted for other uses and applications, among which may be mentioned its use as a micropump for effecting the controlled delivery of a fluid to a point of application or as an oil distributor or the like where it is desired that the discharge of the fluid be controlled by the users hand in which the reservoir is being held. Also, it will be apparent that the present invention is susceptible of various changes and modifications which may be made from time to time without departing from the general principles or real spirit thereof, and accordingly it will be understood that it is intended to claim the same broadly, as well as specifically, as indicated by the appended claims.
What is claimed as new and useful is:
1. In a safety razor of the type having a shaving head including a blade, a blade support and a blade edge guard substantially coextensive in length with the effective length of the blade cutting edge and disposed in closely spaced parallel relation to said cutting edge, a handle for the razor providing a reservoir for holding a supply of skin lubricating fluid for application to the face during the shaving operation, said reservoir including a chamber having a fluid discharge port in communication with fluid discharge passages formed in the shaving head immediate adjacent to and spaced along the effective length of the blade, spring-pressed plunger means operative in said chamber to expel therefrom through said discharge port fluid under pressure exerted by said plunger means, and cable means contained entirely within said handle for retracting said plunger against its spring pressure, and means operable externally of the handle by the hand holding the razor during the shaving operation to automatically control the movement of said plunger means within said chamber and thereby effect flow of lubricant onto the skin being shaved.
2. In a reservoir safety razor as defined in claim 1 wherein said handle is in the form of a cylinder in which said piston is normally biased toward one end of the cylinder and forms with said cylinder end a chamber for holding a supply of said fluid, and wherein said cable means housed within said handle is operable to retract said piston axially in one direction against its normal fluid-expelling bias and to controllably permit axial shifting of said piston in the opposite direction to expel fluid from said chamber and force it to and through said fluid distributing means.
3. In a reservoir safety razor as defined in claim 2 wherein, a pair of end members respectively enclose opposite ends of said cylinder to embrace therebetween said piston, one of said end members being apertured for discharge of fluid expelled by axial movement of said piston toward said apertured end member, and wherein said cable means includes a cable shaft journalled in said cylinder adjacent the other of its end members, an inextensible cable extending between said piston and said shaft, said cable being adapted to be wound about said shaft to retract said piston against outward fluid-expelling movement and to be unwound from said shaft to permit said fluid-expelling movement of the said piston, and means for effecting rotation of said shaft in cable-winding direction.
4. In a reservoir safety razor as defined in claim 3, wherein means operable externally of the handle includes detent means for holding said shaft stationary against unwinding of said cable therefrom.
5. A reservoir safety razor comprising a shaving head having a blade, a blade support and fluid distributing means associated with said blade support for discharging a skin lubricating fluid along the effective length of the cutting edge of said razor blade, a cylinder coupled to said shaving head adapted to serve as a handle for the razor, said cylinder having opposite closed ends one of which is apertured for egress of fluid from said cylinder, fluid'conduit means extending from said aperture to said fluid distributing means, a piston axially shiftable in said cylinder to provide conjointly with said apertured end of the cylinder a chamber containing fluid to be expressed from the cylinder, said piston being normally biased for movement toward the apertured end of the cylinder, winch-means operative to control said normally biased movement of said piston in said cylinder, a gear train disposed within said cylinder for controlling operation of said winch-means and means external of said cylinder for controlling operation of said gear train.
6. A reservoir safety razor as defined in claim 5 including manually operable detent means engageable with and operative to hold said gear train operating means in any selected one of a number of fixed positions relatively to said cylinder.
7. A reservoir safety razor as defined in claim 5 wherein said gear train includes a pair of bevel gears respectively keyed to and rotatable with a pair of orthogonally related shafts rotatably journalled in said cylinder, one of said shafts being adapted to have wound thereabout a cable connected to said piston and the other of said shafts being rotatable in one direction to wind said cable on its shaft to retract said piston against its normally biased outward movement and in the opposite direction to permit unwinding of said cable from its shaft for controlled outward movement of said piston.
8. In a safety razor of the type having a head assembly including a blade support, a blade guard having a free edge substantially coextensive in length with and disposed in close coupled protective relation to the cutting edge of the blade, a fluid distributor manifold secured to said razor head assembly immediately adjacent said blade guard, said manifold having an inlet and a plurality of outlets spaced along the effective length of the cutting edge of the blade, longitudinally shiftable cover means on said manifold, said cover means having a plurality of apertures therein adapted respectively to be shifted into and out of registry with the fluid outlets of said manifold whereby to seal off or open, as desired, the outlets of said manifold for discharge of fluid therefrom, a fluid reservoir coupled to said razor head assembly to serve as a handle therefor, said reservoir including a cylinder and a piston axially shiftable in said cylinder, conduit means extending from said fluid reservoir to the inlet of said manifold, and means operable by the hand holding the razor duringthe shaving operation to automatically control the shifting of said piston within said cylinder and thereby effect flow of fluid to and outward of said manifold onto the skin being shaved.

Claims (1)

1. IN A SAFETY RAZOR OF THE TYPE HAVING A SHAVING HEAD INCLUDING A BLADE, A BLADE SUPPORT AND A BLADE EDGE GUARD SUBSTANTIALLY COEXTENSIVE IN LENGTH WITH THE EFFECTIVE LENGTH OF THE BLADE CUTTING EDGE AND DISPOSED IN CLOSELY SPACED PARALLEL RELATION TO SAID CUTTING EDGE, A HANDLE FOR THE RAZOR PROVIDING A RESERVOIR FOR HOLDING A SUPPLY OF SKIN LUBRICATING FLUID FOR APPLICATION TO THE FACE DURING THE SHAVING OPERATION, SAID RESERVOIR INCLUDING A CHAMBER HAVING A FLUID DISCHARGE PORT IN COMMUNICATION WITH FLUID DISCHARGE PASSAGES FORMED IN THE SHAVING HEAD IMMEDIATE ADJACENT TO AND SPACED ALONG THE EFFECTIVE LENGTH OF THE BLADE, A SPRING-PRESSED PLUNGER MEANS OPERATIVE IN SAID CHAMBER TO EXPEL THEREFROM THROUGH SAID DISCHARGE PORT FLUID UNDER PRESSURE EXERTED BY SAID PLUNGER MEANS, AND CABLE MEANS CONTAINED ENTIRELY WITHIN SAID HANDLE FOR RETRACTNG SAID PLUNGER AGAINST ITS SPRING PRESSURE, AND MEANS OPERABLE EXTERNALLY OF THE HANDLE BY THE HAND HOLDING THE RAZOR DURING THE SHAVING OPERATION TO AUTOMATICALLY CONTROL THE MOVEMENT OF SAID PLUNGER MEANS WITHIN SAID CHAMBER AND THEREBY EFFECT FLOW OF LUBRICANT ONTO THE SKIN BEING SHAVED.
