7152. 5 BY ANDREW w ANDERSEN ATTO/P/VEV United States Patent 3,352,614 TILTABLE HOLDER AND DISPENSER Andrew W. Andersen, 266 Secatogue Lane, West Islip, N.Y. 11795 Filed Oct. 23, 1965, Ser. No. 503,915 1 Claim. (Cl. 312-42) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A tiltable holder and dispenser in which a wallmounted back plate removably hingedly secures a columnar holder and dispenser by means of hinge pins which engage T shaped slots.
This invention relates to a tiltable holder and dispenser for cigarette packs and notebooks.
An object of the present invention is to provide a safe, simple, convenient and attractive means for storing and dispensing packs of cigarettes and matchbooks in the home.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a simple, convenient means for mounting such holder and dispenser on a vertical support such as a wall, and to provide means for tilting said holder and dispenser away from said vertical support so as to provide a simple method of filling said holder and dispenser.
More specifically, the present invention comprises an immovable back plate and a tiltable, removable forward portion comprising a plurality of vertical compartments which hold the item or items to be dispensed therefrom.
Summary of the invention Briefly, and not by way of limitation, the present invention comprises a wall-mounted back plate and a forward dispenser portion which is removably hingedly secured to the back plate. The hinge pins, secured to the back plate, engage T slots in the dispenser portion thereby permitting the dispenser portion to be held against the back plate, to be hinged away therefrom and be held at an angle with respect thereto or be entirely removed therefrom.
In the drawing:

FIGURE 2 is a side view of the invention as shown in FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 3 is a rear view of the present invention.
FIGURE 4 is a side view of the invention as shown in FIGURE 1 in its raised position and showing, in a phantom view, the dispenser in its tilted position.
FIGURE 5 is a side view of the invention as shown in FIGURE 1 with the dispenser removed from its wall mounting plate.
FIGURE 6 is a rear view of the dispenser.
FIGURE 7 is a pictorial representation of the wall mounting plate.
FIGURE 8 is a top view of the invention as shown in FIGURE 1.
FIGURE 9 is a bottom view of the invention.
FIGURE 10 is a cross-sectional view taken across line 10-10 of FIGURE 1 and showing a matchbook being dispensed.
FIGURE 11 is a cross-sectional view taken across line 1111 of FIGURE 1 and showing a. pack of cigarettes being dispensed.
FIGURE 12 is a cross-sectional view taken across line 12--12 of FIGURE 1.
Referring to the drawing, a mounting plate 2 is firmly affixed to a wall or other vertical member by means of an upper screw 4 and a lower screw 6. Lower screw 6 is 3,352,514 Patented Nov. 14, 1967 driven completely into mounting plate 2 and the wall such that its head is flush with the exposed side of said mounting plate 2. Upper screw 4 is driven into mounting plate 2 and the wall until the head thereof protrudes a short distance from said exposed side of mounting plate 2. A horizontal bar 8 is mounted on mounting plate 2, said bar being positioned horizontally across the lower portion thereof, said bar having two hinge pins 10, 12 protruding from the ends thereof.
The dispenser unit 14 consists of three vertical columns 16, 18, 20, two of said columns, 16 and 18, being of similar size and shape and being suitable for receiving packs of cigarettes disposed one on top of another, and the third of said columns, 20, being disposed between said cigarette columns 16, 18, and being adapted to take matchbooks arranged one on top of another.
The lowermost portion of cigarette columns 16, 18 are open on the front side of said dispenser 14, each of such cigarette openings 22, 24 are of such dimension as to permit only one pack of cigarettes at a time to be removed; that is, the lowermost pack of cigarettes, can be removed by hand through one of said openings 22, 24, the pack of cigarettes immediately adjacent above the lowermost pack being constrained by the walls of said cigarette columns 16, 18.
As may best be seen in FIGURE 10, matchbook column 20 has a floor member 26 which is inclined towards the front of dispenser 14. Said floor member 26 has a lip 28 along its lowermost edge, such lip 28 engaging the lowermost matchbook in column 20 and preventing such matchbook from sliding down inclined floor member 26. Such matchbook is removable manually by merely lifting it over lip 28 and withdrawing it from column 20 through opening 30 which is dimensional so as to permit the passage of only one matchbook at a time. The forward wall of column 20 extends upwardly beyond the top of dispenser 14 to form a handle 32.
Bar 34 across the uppermost portion of the rear of dispenser 14 has a slot 36 so positioned as to engage upper screw 4 protruding from mounting plate 2. Sides 33, 40 of dispenser 14 each have a T slot at their lowermost rear portions, said T slots engaging said hinge pins 10 and 12.
As may best be seen in FIGURES 2, 4 and 5, when dispenser 14 is mounted on mounting plate 2, upper screw 4 engages slot 36, hinge pin 10 engages the T slot in side 38 and hinge pin 12 engages the T slot in side 40, hinge pins 10 and 12 being in the uppermost position of the vertical portions of their respective T slots. In order to fill the unit, dispenser 14 is lifted vertically by means of handle 32 until slot 36 is disengaged from upper screw 4 and binge pins 10 and 12 are in the lowermost position of the vertical portions of their respective T slots; dispenser 14 is then rotated about hinge pins 10 and 12 until the lowermost rear corners of sides 38 and 40 contact mounting plate 2 and prevent further rotation. Such rotation brings the top of dispenser 14 forward and tilts it downward so as to permit easy insertion of packs of cigarettes and matchbooks. To return dispenser 14 to its normal position, it is rotated back about hinge pins 10 and 12 until said dispenser 14 is flush against mounting plate 2 whereupon it is slid vertically downward until upper screw 4 engages slot 36 and hinge pins 10 and 12 are in the uppermost position of the vertical portions of their respective T slots.
In order to remove dispenser 14 from mounting plate 2, said dispenser 14 is moved vertically upwards by means of handle 32 until upper screw 4 is disengaged from slot 36 and binge pins 10 and 12 are in the center position of the vertical portions of their respective T slots, whereupon said dispenser 14 is moved horizontally away from mounting plate 2 whereby said hinge pins 10 and 12 pass through the horizontal portions of their respective T slots and become disengaged therefrom,
Sides 38 and 40 of dispenser 14 are extended rearwardly a short distance from the rearmost face of bar 34 so as to provide runners or guides which slide in grooves 42 and 44 of mounting plate 2 respectively.
Dispenser 14 has no back plate; mounting plate 2 becomes the rearmost wall for columns 16, 18 and 29 when dispenser 14 is mounted as described upon said mounting plate 2.
While only a simple embodiment of the invention has been illustrated, it is apparent that the invention is not limited to the exact form or use indicated and that many variations may be made in the particular design and configuration without departing from the scope of the invention as set forth in the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
A dispensing device for cigarette packages, matchbooks and the like, comprising a back panel, a dispenser, said back panel being secured to a vertical wall member, and hinged removable mounting means for hingedly removably mounting said dispenser on said back panel, said dispenser being provided with a plurality of vertically extending cigarette package or the like compartments, the front, side and bottom walls of which are portions of said dispenser and the rear Walls of which are portions of said back panel, said front and side walls extending down toward said bottom walls to define a package removal space therebetween, said dispenser also being provided with at least one vertically extending matchbook compartment the front, side and floor wall-members of which are portions of said dispenser and the rear wall of which is a portion of said back panel, said floor wall being forwardly downwardly inclined with respect to the vertical and having a protrusion on its lowermost edge, a matchbook removing space being defined between said front and side wall members and said protrusion, said hinged removable mounting means comprising at least two coaxial hinge pins secured to said back panel, said hinge pins each removably engaging said dispenser at a substantially T-shaped hinge slot provided in a side wall thereof, one such hinge slot for each hinge pin, the base of each T-shaped hinge slot extending horizontally rearwardly, whereby said dispenser is hingedly removably mounted on said back panel.
