EXPLOSIVE COMPOUND.
$PECIIICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 335,006, dated January 26, 1886.
Application filed October 7, 1885. Serial No. 179,210. (No specimens.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES \V. A. ZADEK. of Bartow-on-the-Sound, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Explosive Compounds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved explosive compound for mines, torpedoes. and projectiles; and it consists of an explosive compound formed of a mixture of resinate of calcium or magnesium and trinitro-glycerine. The resinates are prepared as follows: A sufficient quantity of caustic soda is dissolved at boiling heat in an iron kettle, and as much colophony added thereto as the caustic soda can absorb. This solution is drawn off and strained and then allowed to cool. On the cold mass is poured a not too concentrated solution of chloride of calcium or sulphate of magnesium. The. precipitate formed is a resinate of calcium or magnesium, according as the calcium or magnesium salt has been used. The resinate is thoroughly washed and then collected, pressed out, and separated in a centrifugal machine from the adhering water, then dried on linen-covered frames at a temperature of 50 Reaumnr, and finally pulverized, so that an impalpable powder is obtained which possessesthe property of mixing readily with nitro-glycerine, and to form therewith a jellylike mass when mixed in proportions of twenty-five parts of the resinate to seventy-five parts of nitro-glycerine. With a greaterquantity of resinate"say,from twenty-five to sixty in. one hundred parts -nitro-glycerine forms a more or less glutinous mass, whichcan be handled easier and with less danger than any other mixture of nitro-glycerine.
The disadvantages of all known mixtures of nitro-glycerine consists in their sensitiveness to accidental shocks or concussions with other bodies. This sensitiveness is entirely avoided by my compound, as the same possesses greater elasticity, and is thereby better adapted for torpedoes and projectiles. The same can be manufactured without danger and is not afiected by water. It is discharged by means of caps containing fulminate of mercury. It is free of gases injurious to the lungs, as the formation of carbonic acid gas is greatly rednced,whereby the compound is adapted for use in closed spaces, such as mines, 8:0.
Another special ad vantage of my improved explosive compound is that it does not crystallize when cooled down to the freezing-point or even at a lower temperature. At'atemperature of to Fahrenheit the com pound assumes a granular form of extreme fineness, in which state it is not impaired in the least for practical use and can be handled with safety.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent An explosive compound consisting of a mixture of resinate of calcium or magnesium with trinitro-gly -.erine, substantially as set forth.
