Description
FFIC.
PATENT T. G. BANCROFT, OF- VORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN UMBRELLAS AND PARASOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,472, dated October 15, 186i.
To .ar/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, T. G. BANcRoFT, of Vorcester, in the county of Worcester' and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Umbrellas and Sunshades; and I do hereby de clare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making apart of this specification, in which- Figure l is a transverse section of a sunshade with the cover stretched or in an open position. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of the covering detached from the frame. Fig. 3 is a detached portion of the handle, showing the scren7 fitting the extension-tip.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to an improvement in umbrellas or sunshades designed to admit of the use of white or some light-colored cloth for a covering that will not conduct the heat like a black or dark covering; and the invention consists in a certain construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter explained, whereby the cover can be easily removed from the' frame to be washed, and replaced again at the will of the user or a new one substituted.
A represents the handle or stick, having a screwrod (t fastened in its upper end, onto which an extension-tip B, provided in one end with a screw-thread, is fitted so as to be capable of being moved up and down on the 'rod for the purpose of tightening or loosening the covering, as hereinafter more fully explained.
b is a lianged or grooved collar litt-ed loosely upon the extension-tip, so as to allow the tip to have an independent rotary movement; This collaris supported upon the extensiontip by a flange c, `by means of which it is caused to move up and down therewith.
The bands C C, braces D D, and sliding collar E, being in all respects like the common umbrellas and parasols, do not require a special description.
F F are socket-tips attached at one end and equidistant apart to the bottom edge of the covering II. The said tips are made to tit upon the ends of the bows, and correspond in number with the bows in the frame.
To fasten the covering upon the frame it is first attached to the flanged or grooved collar and then a hood CZ is slipped over. the upper end ot' the collar and against the clot-h to give greater security to the fastening and also to make a neater finish. The collar is then placed upon the extension-tip and screwed down upon the screw-rod in the end of the handle as far as is necessary to admit the ends of the bows to be inserted into the sockettips, after which the covering can be stretched to any desired tautuess by raising and lowering the tip upon the screw-rod, at the same time making at the top a complete fastening for the covering independent ot the frame-work. The covering being 'fastened independently of the frame, all shrinkage or stretching of the same can be compensated for by means `of the extension-tip.
The above-described improvement is one of simplicity and ofgreat utility. Itis well known that the frame of an umbrella or parasol is capable of ontlasting several covers, and the advantage and saving ot` expense lin being able to remove the cover when soiled and replace it by a clean one is very great, besides admitting Ot the use of acover better adapted for the purpose of a sunshade on account of being able to wash it when soiled.
Another advantage in having the cover detachable is that a number of covers of different materials and colors can be used upon the same frame.
That I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The flanged collar b, extension-tip B, screwrod d, cover H, and socket-tips F F, or their equivalent, in combination with the frame of an umbrella or parasol, when arranged and operating in the manner and for the purposes substantially as described.
