FARM- GATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No 334,727, dated January 19, 1886.
Application tiled September 21, 1885. Serial No. 177,741.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS B. THORN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vincennes, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Farm-Gates; and I dodeclare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figurel of the drawings is a representation of this invention, and is a perspective View. Fig. 2 is a detail, and shows an end view; and Fig. 3 is also a detail drawing, and is a verti: cal section.
This invention relates to improvements in sliding gates, its object being to construct a device by means of which the gate may be opened and closed from either side by a person on horseback or in a carriage; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by letter, A designates the gate, having the vertical end posts, B B, the upper ends of which rise to unequal distances above the upper rail of the gate, the post B being higher than the post B. The upper ends of the posts B B are longitudinally slotted in the plane of the gate, and have journaled within the slots the pulleys b b, respectively.
0 is the gate-post adjacent to the end post B, and O is the gate-post adjacent to the end post, B. The gatepost O, which stands to the outer side of the end post B, is much taller than the gate-post O, and is provided with a vertical slot, 0, in the plane of the gate. The slot begins below the level of the top of the end posts and runs upward for a suitable dis tance. The gate-post O is provided with a vertical slot, 0, which runs from near its top to its foot. The slot is in the plane of the gate which passes through it, the end post B standing to the outer side of the gate-post.
Dis a beam, pivoted about its center in the slot c, near the top of the same, and having one of its arms, d, extending over the gate and through the slot 0 of the post 0.
(No model.)
D is a metallic rod, secured by bolts and braces to the ends of the beam D, and having its center passing over andvsecured to the outer end of a bar, d, standing at right angles downward from the center of the beam D. The said rod D passes through the slots in the tops on the end posts and under the pulleys I) b. The arm (I of the beam passes a short distance to the outer side of the post 0, after going through the slot 0, and supports the weight of the gate when closed. The arm d stands outward from the post 0.
E is a horizontal beam, secured to the post 0 some distance above the slot 0, on the opposite side from the gate, and having arms of equal length on each side of the post; and e e are stay-bars or braces that support it from the post. The beam is recessed its whole length on its under side to near its ends. Each arm has two pulleys, F F, journaled near its end Within the recess, but turning as they-rotate in opposite directions.
G G are pulleys journaled within the recess at equal distances from the post 0, but nearer thereto than to the ends of the beam E.
H H are pulleys journaled within the recess immediately in line with the opposite edges of the post 0. The end of the arm d outside of the slot 0 has at opposite points on its sides the double hooks I I, each provided with a downward-looking point, i, and an upwardlooking point, i, as shown.
K is a cleat secured to the post 0 a short distance below the slot 0, and having journaled in it the two similar pulleys, is k.
L is a rope or cord on either side of the gate that runs over the pulleys F and G, under and around one of the pulleys k, and ascending thence is secured to the upwardly-projecting point t" of a hook, I. The end of the cord depending from the pulley F is provided with a hand-hold, Z.
M is a cord running over the pulleys F and H, and descending thence fastened to the downwardly-projecting point i of the hook I. The end of the cord depending from the pulley F is furnished with a hand-hold, m, similar to Z.
It is evident from the foregoing that the cords L and M act in opposition to each other.
When the gate is closed, the beam D inclines upward from the post 0 to post 0, and the end of the arm d lies in the bottom of the slot 0. A person desiring to open the gate pulls down the hand-hold m, and by means of the cord M, running over the pulleys F and H, lifts the end (1 of the beam. The left-hand end of rod D travels upward with that end of the beam, and the gate travels by drawing on the rod toward the post 0, the pulleys or rollers b I) allowing it to move easily on the rod. The motion that pulls down the handles m raises the handles Z, and to close the gate the latter handle is pulled down.
The gate, as is evident, can be opened or closed from either side.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
The combination of the gate A, the end bars, B B, provided with the pulleys b I), respectively, the slotted gate-posts C O, the beam D, and rod D,with the horizontal recessed beam E, the pulleys F, F, G, H, and K, the doublepointed hooks I I on the end of the arm (I of the beam D, and the cords L and M, respectively provided with the hand-holds Z and m, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS B. THORN.
