UNITED STATES PATENT EErcE.
oHAELEs A. LIEB, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
SPECIFICATION 'forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,672, dated January 19,1886.
Application filed April 22, 1885.
Y To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES A. LIEB, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use improvements in the construction of blocks to be used in connection with machines for trimming books and pamphlets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and correct description of my invention, reference heinghad to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specication, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure lis a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top view vof the same. Fig. 3 is a top view of the block extended. Fig. 4 is a view of the central section, a. Fig. 5 isa view of one of the sections. Fig. 6 is a side view of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a view of one of the sections ou4 a5. Fig. 8 is a View of the under side of the upper surface.
Inthe drawings like parts of the invention are designateth bythe same letters of reference. i
The nature of my invention consists in the construction, as more fully hereinafter set forth, of animproved block to be used in conneet-ion with machines for trimming books and pamphlets, the object of the invention being the production of a block for this purpose capable of adjustment lengthwise and crosswisc, so as to accommodate it to books or pamphlets of different sizes. The block is attached to the portion of the machine directly above the table upon which the pile of books or pamphlets is placed, and forms, as it were, an upper clampingsurface, between which and the table the pile of books or pamphlets is clamped, and at' the same time ser\ves as a guide to the'knife of the machine by which the trimming is done. It is made adjustable both crosswise and lengthwise, so that when attached in position upon the machine it can be adjusted to different sizes of books or pamphlets to be trimmed, thus saving time and `expediting the work required of the machine.
To enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will describe the same.
The improved block may be said to be composed of an under andan upper surface. The under surface is composed of the sections a, a,
Serial No. 161.0051. (No model.)
a?, a", and a5. The sections a and a2 are provided at one end and on the side with the projecting ledge or raised surface b, and at the opposite end the metal is beveled, as at c, so as to present, as it were, a knife-edge; or this portion of the lower surface may be made separately and riveted to the sections a and a". The sections a and a* are grooved, as at d, to
allow the cross-bar e of the central section, a,
to be received and move freely in the same. The sections c and a2 are also provided with the tongues f, moving freely in the grooves g of the sections a* and a5.
a3 shows the central section of the lower surface, provided with the projecting ledge or raised surface h at one end, and also with the cross-bar e, received and moving freely in the grooved ways d of the sections a and a". The remaining sections of the under surface, a* and a5, are provided on the sides with the projecting ledge or raised surface i, and when placed in position project beyond the beveled ends of the sections a and a2, the tongues f of which are received and move freely in the grooves g.
The sections a, a2, a, and ai are provided with screw-holes k, for the reception of the bolts Z, employed to hold the sections together, and the section ai is necessarily made shorter than the sections a and c".
The upper surface of the block consists simply of the `plate of metal fm., formed in one piece, provided with the oblong openings 'n and the nearly-square openings o. It is also grooved, as at p, to receive guides 2, placed upon the section a3, and upon its upper side is provided with a standard, q, by which it may be attached to the machine with which it is to be used, the standard q passing through an opening in the machine, and being fastened by a nut, s, engaging with the threaded end of the standard (j. The upper and under surfaces thus constructed are placed in proper positions by placing the upper surface upon and within the lower surface, and are secured together by bolts Z, passed through the oblong openings-11J and nearly-square openings o, and entering into the screw-holes lc.
The operation may be thus described: The block composed of the two surfaces secured together, as described, is attached to the up- IOx..
per portion of t e book or pamphlet triniining machine, d rectly above the table upon which the books or pamphlets to be trimmed are placed, and bears upon the upper` surface of the muze. It is adjustable laterally to the extent ofthe openings in the upper Surface by loosening the bolts passed through the same into the sections of the lower surface and moving sections a, a", a, and ai sidewise and lengthwise by moving the sections a and a5 away from the sections a a2.
It will be seen that the block can be readily altered to accommodate itself to books of ditl ferent widths and lengths, and that this ad- 15 justinent can be made rapidly and without the necessity of removing the block from the mw chine, by which the work of the machine is necessarily quickened.
Having now set forth my invention, what I claim :is new is- In :L block for book and pamphlet trinnning machines, the combination ofthe following elements: the sections a, a, a, a4, and nn upper plate, m, provided with the openings n and o and standard q, and the bolts Z, all constructed and operating substantially' as and for the purposes set forth.
