Description

J. 0. SERGESON.
L-OQM SHUTTLE. No. 334,616. Patented Jan. 19, 1886-.
' WITH/8858:
FFKCEG LOOM-SHUTTLE.
ESPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,616, dated January 19. 1886.
Application filed July 15, 1885. Serial No. 171,653. (No model.)
To. aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES C. SERGEsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Loom-Shuttles, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawingsin which Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a portion of a loom-shuttle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a top view thereof. Fig. 3 represents a longitudinal section thereof in line or m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a transverse section thereof in line 3 Fig. 2. Fig. 5 represents a transverse section thereof in line 2 2, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a shuttle provided with-means, substantially as hereinafter set forth, whereby the yarn may be readily threaded in the eye or guide.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a loom-shuttle body, which is of well-known form and construction.
B represents an eye or slotted plate, through which the yarn is passed out from the bobbin or cop, the same being properly fitted in the side of the shuttle-body and secured thereto. The said plate is slotted, as at a, having one of the walls, 13 thereof toward the. main portion of the shuttle-body of a greater height than the other wall portion, B. The upper portion of the wall B is formed somewhat inclined or sloping on its outer side, as seen in Fig. 5. Rising from the end of the shuttlebody, adjacent to the eye B and forward of the same, is a post, 0, and on the same is sustained a horizontallyarranged plate, D, it being noticed that a recess, a, and channel I) exist, respectively, between the post and plate and the adjacent portions of the shuttle-body. One side of the plate is extended to the top of the eye B and has a depending lip, E, the lower edge of which is extended so as to come in contact with the upper edge ofthe wall B of the slot of said eye on the side toward the spindle. The top of the other Wall of said slot has on its inner face a deflector, F,whereby the yarn will be unfailingly guided to the drawn out by the fingers or a hook, if de- 7 slot, as will be hereinafter more fully described. The side of the plate D opposite to the lip E has a lip, G, which depends nearthe outer edge thereof, and is separated from the adjacent part of the shuttle by the beginning of the channel I). The side of the post has a spiral groove, H, by which the yarn is directed to the bottom of the post, and thus guided to the base of the slot or opening of the eye B.
The operation is as follows: The yarn is directed to the channel I) and run around the same, whereby it passes under the plate D, and then around the post, after which it passes in the direction toward the bobbin or cop, strikes the deflector F on the wall or part B of the eye, and comes in contact with the wall or part B of said eye, it being noticed that the part B rises above the part B, and, as has been stated, is in contact with the plate D. As the yarn cannot pass over the top of the part B, owing to said plate D, it descends the slot of the eye B and appears in front of the part B, as seen in Fig. 1, where it may be sired, and thus theyarn may be run offthrough said eye, it being noticed that owing to the spiral groove of the post 0, the yarn thereafter is directed to the bottom of said groove, and thus retained at the base of the slot of the eye. Should the yarn rise while running under the plate D, the lip G prevents the same reaching the channel I) and escaping therefrom. Owing to the slot of the eye B being closed at top by the wall of the opening, in which said eye is fitted, and the plate D, yarn is preventedfrom escaping between the top of the eye and adjacent portion of the shuttle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A shuttle-body provided with the slotted eye B, having parts B B", of unequal height, forming walls to said slot, and the plate D, having depending lip E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A shuttle-body provided with the slotted eye B, having inner deflector, F, and parts B B", in combination with the post 0 and plate D, having depending lip E, the latter no being in contact with said part Bof the slotted I body, and the plate D, having depending lips eye B, substantially as and for the purpose set E and G, substantially as described.
forth. 4 T 3. The shuttle-body A, in combination with JAMES SDRGESO)" 5 the slotted eye B, having parts 13 B the lat- \Vitnesses:
ter, B having an upper sloping portion, the JOHN A. \VIEDERsHEIM, spiral grooved post secured to said shuttle- A. P. GRANT.
