HAND FORCE-PUMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part'of Letters Patent No. 334,483, dated January 19. 1886.
Application filed November 16, 1885. Serial No. 182,920.
A and B are two cylinders, connected at the bottom by'the water-passage O.
D is the piston, made of metal, with pacl ing around its circumference.
E is the dischargezpipe, placed in the center of cylinder B, being soldered to the cylinder-cap F, and extending down through the air-chamber G, terminating in the connecting-casting H, which is made with .arms, as seen in Fig. 4. The said arms extend out against thesides of the cylinder B and hold the lower end of the discharge-pipe E in a central position. The connectingcasting H has also holes through the sides, to admit the water to the lower end of the discharge-pipe E.
I is a rod made fast in the connecting-casting H, and terminates with a screw-thread and nut J at the bottom.
K K are two valves, constructed alike, being made of metal and flexible material. The metal portion of the valves is shown in Fig. 2.
L L are central hubs with holes, through which the rod I passes.
M M represent a row of holes around the central hub of each valve, through which the water passes. On the outside of the rim of each valve seat is a groove, N, to receive packing in order to make the valves fit watertight when placed in the cylinder; also, on the rim of each valve are cast two lugs, X X, with holes through the same, to facilitate the removing of the valves and seats from the cylinder when it becomes necessary in order to repair them.
P P are the flexible portions of the two valves, which consist of circular pieces of leather or other flexible material placed on top of the metal portion of each valve, covering the rows of holes represented by M M, and which open and close the holes as the water is acted upon by the piston.

B is a piece of metal tube placed upon the rod I, to hold the valves K K a proper distance apart.
S is a strainer, of wire-cloth, soldered to the rim of the lower valve-seat, to prevent any substance being drawn in to obstruct the operation of the pump, and is shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 shows a spray-nozzle, made of metal tube, with one end pressed together, forming the long narrow opening T, as seen in Fig. 5. Figs. 6 and 7 show the manner of connecting the spray-nozzle to the discharge-nozzle V in Fig. 1.
The operation of the pump is as follows: The water or liquid to be used is placed in some vessel or receptacle and the pump placed in it, resting on the bottom, and by means of the hand-lever the piston D is operated in the usual manner. \Vhen the piston D is raised, the lower valve is opened and the Water drawn in, and when the reverse motion is made and the piston D is pressed down the lower valve immediately closes, and the water is forced up through the upper Valve into the air-chamber G, and, rising above the opening at the lower end of the discharge-pipe E, traps the air in the air-chamber G, and by a continued action of the piston D the air is compressed in the air-chamber G, which forces the water through the discharge-pipe E and out at the nozzle V in a continuous stream.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and for which I desire Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The central discharge-pipe, E, the connectingcasting H, and rod I, terminating with a screw-thread and nut Jat the bottom, in combination with the valves K K, the metal tube R, and cylinders A and B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The two valves K K, constructed alike, with central holes, to admit the rod I, also holes M M, for the passage of water, and two lugs, X X, cast on the rim of each valve, with a hole through each lug, and a groove, N, around the circumference of each valve, to receive packing, in combination with the strainer S, metal tube R, rod I, connectingcasting H, and discharge-pipe E, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
