OHIO, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN SOHMED, OF SAME PLACE.
MACHINE FOR PRODUCING ORNAMENTAL SURFACES 0N TEXTILE FABRICS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 334,477, dated January 19, 1886.
Application filed February 9, 1885. Serial No. 155,412. (No model.)
To a whom, it may concern: v
Be it known that I, AUGUST SOHIMDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gincinnati, Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Machines for Producing Ornamental Surfaces on Textile Fabrics, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to that class of ma chines heretofore used for producing flutes or crimps in textile fabrics for temporary ornament, and commonly called fluting-ma chines, and it consists in the machine hereinafter described, for producing a different style of ornamental surfacing in such fabrics to wit. protuberances, in any systematic arrangement adapted to the operation of the machine, as hereinafter more fully described.
Mechanism embodying my invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- 7 Figure 1 is a perspective view of my apparatus complete; Fig. 2, a side elevation of the same; Fig. 3, a vertical cross-section taken axially through the pressingroller centrally through its manipulating-handle, and Fig. 4 a vertical crosssection of the roller and part of the base-plate at an intermediate point between the ends of the roller.
As indicated in the drawings, my improved apparatus consists of a flat base-plate,-A, on the upper surface of which are protuberances 0, arranged in definite series. according tothe pattern to be produced in the fabric, and a roller, B, pivotally mounted in side lugs, c, securing it to a handle, H. The base-plate A is preferably cast of metal-such as brass, or zinc, or block-tin-in an encircling iron frame, a; and't-he roller is cast hollow, for the insertion of a heating-iron, b, but with a smooth exterior peripheral surface, in which I drill openings or cavities ,1), corresponding with the protuberances a of the base-plate.
To accommodatethe insertion of the heating-iron b, one end of the hollow roller B is left open, the pivotal connection being by means of an annular flange surrounding this opening, which opening is exteriorly closed by a pivoted gate, 0, upon one of the lugs c. The lugs c are fastened at their upper ends to a cross-bar, e, to which is attached a manipulating-handle, H, as shown.
The fabric to be operated upon, properly starched and dampened, is placed upon the base-plate across the protuberances a, and the roller, suitably heated, is then pressed down and rolled over the fabric in such manner that the cavities of the roller fit over upon the protuberances of the base-plate, pressing the fabric between, forming the surface of the fabric into protuberances corresponding with those of the base-plate, which are set by the starch of the material under the heat of the roller, producing a very attractive ornamental surfacing of the goods.
It will readily be perceived that the general features of the design may be altered by changing the arrangement of the protuberances and cavities correspondingly.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- Theimproved machine for ornamentingtextile fabrics, consisting, substantially, of a baseplate having protuberances upon its surface, arranged in separate series both longitudinally and transversely of the plate, and a hollow roller provided with a manipulating-ham dle and having in its peripheral surface pits or cavities corresponding with the protuberauces of the base-plate, said rollerhaving one end open for the insertion of a heating-iron and provided with a closing gate, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
, AUGUST SCHMIDT.
