ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An unwind roll stand including a horizontally disposed support member movably mounted on a base and a pair of roll supporting standards movably mounted on said support member, said support member having a single guideway means on each side thereof and cooperative with support members on both said base and said standards to enable the relative movement therebtween.
Background of invention Conventionally, unwind stands for rolls of web material comprise a pair of complementary standards mounted on a support member for movement toward and away from each other and carrying chuck means for removably supporting a roll core therebetween, the support member bemg mounted on a base for movement axially of the roll and also angularly to align and orient the web as it is from the roll. Such rolls are usually of a length of several feet and Weigh many tons, so that the stands must be large and heavy in order to accommodate and support such rolls.

It is another object of the invention to provide an unwind stand in which relative movement between the parts is effected easily and with minimum power requirements.
It is still another object of the present invention to provide in an unwind stand a support member which is formed with means that accommodates the mounting means for the chuck standards, whereby they are movable relative to each other and which means also accommodates a means whereby the support member can move rectilinearly in a horizontal plane relative to a stationary base, and to provide a very simple and compact means whereby the support member can achieve a desired angular movement about a vertical axis.
A further object of the invention is to provide in an unwind stand very compact and simply actuated operating means for effecting relative rectilinear movement between the relatively movable parts thereof.
Still another object of the invention is to provide in an unwind stand very compact and simply actuated operating means for effecting angular movement of the support member relative to the fixed base.
It is a still further object of the invention to provide an unwind stand having simplicity of design, economy of construction and efiiciency in operation.
Summary of invention Generally stated, the present invention comprises an unwind stand including a base having upstanding brackets which carry rollers, and a support plate having longitudinal grooves or slideways machined in its opposite longitudinal sides to receive the rollers and also to receive rollers journaled in depending side walls of the chuck carrying standards, the support plate having a pair of slots in the underside thereof, one adjacent each end, respectively, to accommodate a pivot roller on a vertical axis and an eccentrically actuated cam roller of angulation of the support member or plate, whereby the support member or plate can slide longitudinally in a rectilinear fashion, and can move angularly in a curvilinear fashion, with the standards being slidable relative to each other along the longitudinal axis of the support member or plate independent of the movement of the support member.
The principal advantage of the present invention resides in the fact that a minimum of machining is required, since only one slideway or groove need be provided in each side of the support member or plate and only simple slots need be provided in the bottom of the support member or plate. Thereby, machining is reduced to a minimum and, due to the arrangement of the guide rollers for enabling sliding movement of the support member and the standards and the provision of the pivot and cam rollers for achieving the angulation of the plate, ease of movement of the entire assembly is remarkably increased.
Brief description of drawings The novel features that are considered characteristic of the invention are set forth with particularity in the appended claims. The invention itself, however, both as to its organization and its method of operation, together with additional objects and advantages thereof, will best be understood from the following description of a specific embodiment when read in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like parts throughout the several figures and in which:

Detailed description of invention wind standard in accordance with the present invention is characteristic of stands of this type in that it comprises a fixed base 10, a support member 12 movably mounted on the base 10, and a pair of chuck standards 14 movably mounted on the support member 12 and adapted to removably support a roll R of web material.
The chuck standards 14 are each provided with a chuck 15 adapted to removably engage and support rotatably a roll R of web material therebetween. The standards 14 are movable relative to each other longitudinally of the support member 12 to accommodate mounting and dismounting of the roll and its core. The support member 12, in turn, is longitudinally movable relative to the base to align the roll and its web with a web processing machine (not shown), and said support member 12 is also angularly movable on said base to orient the web relative to such processing machine.
The support member 12 is shown as a horizontally disposed relatively thick steel plate having a centrally located longitudinally extending slot 16 opening vertically therethrough to accommodate drive mechanism for the chuck standards 14, as will be described hereinafter. To support the support member 12 and the standards 14 for their rectilinear longitudinal movement relative to each other and to the base 10, the support member or plate 12 is provided in each longitudinal side edge 18 with a longitudinal groove 20, these grooves 20 constituting unitary means for mounting the chuck standards 14 on the support plate 12 and also the support plate on the base 10.
To support the plate 12, the base 10 has, at its opposing sides and adjacent and intermediate its opposing ends, fixed upstanding brackets 22 which have their bases 24 bolted or otherwise suitably fixed on the base and terminate at their upper ends in transverse collars 26 in each of which is mounted a stub shaft 28 that rotatably supports a roller 30, said rollers 30 extending into said support plate grooves 20 to rollingly support the plate 12. As best shown in FIGS. 4 and 7, the brackets 22 are spaced somewhat from the opposing sides 18 of the support member or plate 12 so as to permit some lateral movement of the plate on the rollers 30, as will be described more completely hereinafter.
The chuck standards 14, as shown more particularly in FIG. 4, include side plates 32 terminating in opposing depending flanges 34 which straddle and lie alongside of the opposing sides 18 of the support member 12. The depending flanges 34 are formed with transverse openings 36 to receive sleeves 38 which accommodate the shanks 40 of inwardly disposed rollers 42, the rollers extending into the grooves 20 common with the rollers 30, as shown more particularly in FIG. 1. The depending flanges 34 are closely juxtaposed to the sides 18 of the support member or plate and the flange are provided with transverse threaded bores 44 to receive axially adjustable threaded bolts 46. Bearing blocks 48 are carried by the inner ends of the bolts 46 and bear against the sides 18 of the support member or plate 12 so as to prevent lateral movement of the standards 14.
To eflYect movement of the chuck standards 14, they are each provided with a collar 50 depending from their bottom wall 52 into the slot 16 in the support plate 12, the collars being axially aligned longitudinally of the plate 12. As shown more clearly in FIG. 2, the collars 50 each support a fixed internally threaded tubular nut 54 and these nuts threadedly receive an elongated screw rod 56 having oppositely threaded portions 58 and 58' which respectively engage the nuts so that, upon rotation of the rod 56, the standards are moved toward or away from each other. As shown in FIGS. 2 and 6, the rod 56 extends freely through a bore 60 in one end of the plate 12 and is mounted at its outer end portion in bearings 62 carried by the plate 12. The outer end of the rod 56 is connected, through a gear reduction unit 64, to a motor 66 mounted on a bracket 68 that projects outwardly from the end of the support member 12.
Means is provided for bodily moving the support member or plate 12 rectilinearly along the base 10 in a longitudinal direction, carrying the standards in any of their relative positions. Such means includes an internally threaded nut 70 carried by a swivel support 72 depending from the motor bracket 68, and a screw rod 74 threaded in the nut 70 to produce the rectilinear longitudinal movement of the support member 12. The rod 74- is journaled in a self-aligning bearing 76 supported by a bracket 78 on the base 10, and is connected by a double universal joint 80 to a prime mover 82, mounted on the base 10. The swivel 72, self-aligning bearing 76 and double universal joint 80 permit angular movement of the support member or plate 12, as will be described.
The means for producing the angular movement of the support member or plate 12 includes the provision of a pair of longitudinally extending grooves or slots 84 and 86 in the underside of the support member or plate, one adjacent each end, as best shown in FIG. 2. The slot 84 preferably is at the end adjacent the support drive means 72-82 and opens into the vertical slot 16 in the support member. A roller 88, best shown in FIG. 6, is disposed in the slot 84 and is rotatably mounted on shaft 90 supported vertically by a bracket 92 fixed on the base 10. The roller 88 fits closely in the slot 84 and constitutes the pivot for angular movement of the plate 12 while the slot 84 accommodates longitudinal movement of the plate 12.
The slot 86, as best shown in FIGS. 3 and 5, opens through the opposite end of the underside or bottom of the support member 12 and has a roller 94 closely fitted therein. The roller 94 is rotatably supported by a vertically mounted shank 96 that is disposed eccentrically in a bearing member 98 that is rotatably mounted by bearings 100 in an upstanding sleeve bracket 102 mounted on the base 10. The bearing member 98 is fixed to one end of a lever or actuating arm 104 which projects outwardly and, preferably, radially of the axes of both the shank 96 and the bearing member 98. The lever arm 104 is operative to swing the shank and roller 94 in an eccentric fashion so that the roller, bearing against the opposing walls of the slot 86, will produce an angular movement of the support member or plate 12 about the roller 88.
The outer end of the lever arm 104 terminates in a yoke 106 which encircles an annular portion 108 of a traveling nut 110 that is circumposed on and actuated by a transverse screw rod 112. The screw rod is journalled at one end in a bearing means 114 and is attached at its other end to a gear reduction unit 116 of a suitable prime mover 118. Actuation of the lever arm by rotation of the screw rod 112 and consequent traveling movement of the nut 110, will swing the arm 104 in one or the other directions to swing roller 94 to produce an angular movement of the support member or plate 12.
With respect to the slots 84 and 86, it is to be noted that they are of suitable and substantially similar longitudinal extent for accommodating the rectilinear or longitudinal movement of the support member or plate 12. As previously stated, the slots are of a width to snugly receive the respective rollers 88 and 94 so that there is no lost motion in achieving the angulation of the support member. Also by virtue of utilizing the rollers, friction and wear is minimized.
An arrangement for driving the chucks 15 is shown in FIG. 4 as comprising an air cylinder 12!) which is pivoted at its lower end on a fixed eye bracket 122 on each standard 14 and has a clevis 124 on the extended end of its piston rod 126. A bell crank 128, mounted on a fixed pivot on a cross support 132, has one end connected to the clevis and on its other end carries a friction driven gear type motor 134 which drives a friction wheel 136. The chuck 15 is provided with a friction drum 138, see also FIG. 1, which is selectively engaged by the friction Wheel 136 upon actuation of the cylinder 120. The chucks 15 are driven in this manner for threading the web from the roll R in the associated processing machine. A brake drum 140 is provided on the outer ends of each chuck shaft for controlling the rotation of the of the roll as the web is unwound.
The essence of the present invention resides in the provision of a single guideway means along each side of the support member 12 which serves the dual purpose of supporting the support member 12 on the base and also supporting the chuck standards 14 on the support member. Thus, the guideways and the two slots 84 and 86 are the only portions of the whole structure which require machining as far as the supporting and moving arrangement is concerned.
The guideway means heretofore described are constituted by the grooves 20 in the edges 18 of a support plate 12. According to a modification shown in FIG. 8, however, each guideway may comprise a rail 20 extending laterally from each longitudinal edge 18 of a support member which may be constituted by a frame 12'. In this case, the rails 20' may rest upon rollers 30' mounted on the base 10' and the rollers 42' supporting the chuck standards '14 may rest on the rails 26'.
The flanges 34' on the standards 14' the outer sides of the rails 20 and carry bearing blocks 48' to prevent lateral shifting of the standards. Consequently, machining is limited to the top, bottom and outer surfaces of the rails 20'. Moreover, the rails 20' may be formed separately from the support member and removably attached thereto as by bolt means 142. Obviously, suitable guide means equivalent to the slots 84 and 86 must be provided within the frame 12', as by inverted channel members the inner sides of whose flanges are machined, or parallel spaced bars whose opposed inner sides are machined to accommodate the pivot and eccentric cam rollers 88 and 94. Moreover, it will be apparent that the grooves 20 may be formed by channel members which may be removably attached to the support member 12, 12'.
The operation of the present invention is very simple, which accounts for its adaptability, and it can be appreciated that the structure is very compact and yet sturdy. To move the standards 14, 14 apart so as to mount or dismount a web roll R relative to the chucks 15, 15 it is only necessary to actuate the motor or prime mover 66 to rotate the screw rod 56 and drive the nuts 54, 54 to spread the standards apart or move them toward each other, depending upon whether a web roll is to be mounted or dismounted between the chucks.
After the web roll R has been mounted in place, it is necessary to align the roll with an associated machine which is to be supplied with web material from the roll. For the purpose of aligning the web roll, the support member 12 may be moved longitudinally of the base 10 by actuating the motor 82, which operates the screw rod 74 and bodily moves the support member in a rectilinear or longitudinal movement. Also, the support member 12 can be moved angularly relative to the base for orienting the web relative to the processing machine by actuating the prime mover 118 which, through the arm 104, will operate the eccentrically actuated roller 94 and pivot the support member about the pivot roller 88.
It will be appreciated that the guideways or 20' at the opposite sides of the support member 12 accommodate the rollers on the side plates of the chuck standards and also accommodate the base supported rollers for supporting the member 12 or 12. Thus, only one groove 20 or rail 20' need be machined for each side of the support member or plate. In addition, it can be appreciated that the slots 84 and 86, or their equivalents, can be easily machined in the underside of the support member 12 or 12'. Therefore, the present invention eliminates the necessity of machining of large slide surfaces on the standards, the support member and the base.

Also, due to the provision of the supporting rollers, the sliding movement of the standards and support member is facilitated due to the substantial elimination of friction and due to the provision and arrangement of the pivot roller 88 and the cam roller 94, the angular movement of the support member is greatly facilitated.
Although a certain specific embodiment of the invention has been shown and described, it is obvious that many modifications thereof are possible. The invention, therefore, is not to be restricted except insofar as is necessitated by the prior art and by the spirit of the appended claims.
That which is claimed, as new, is:
1. In an unwind stand for a web roll, including a horizontal stationary base, a horizontally disposed support member, a pair of upstanding opposed chuck standards, means movably mounting said support member on said base and said standards on said support member for movement relative to each other, and means for moving said standards relative to each other on said support member and for moving said support member on said base, the improvement in said mounting means comprising support means on each side of said base, support means on each side of said standards, and a single guideway means on each side of said support member and respectively co'-' operative with and supported by said base support means for relative rectilinear movement and also respectively supporting said standard support means for rectilinear movement thereof relative to each other.
2. An unwind stand according to claim 1 wherein both said base support means and said standard support means comprise roller means, whereby said guideway means on said support member are the only parts requiring machinmg.
3. An unwind stand according to claim 2 wherein said guideway means comprises a groove extending longitudinally in each side edge of said support member.
4. An unwind stand according to claim 2 wherein said guideway means comprises a longitudinal rail extending laterally from each side of said support member.
5. An unwind stand according to claim 2 wherein said standards comprise flanges depending from the sides thereof in overlying relation to said guideway means and mounting said roller support means, and bearing means on said flanges and engaging said support member to preclude lateral movement of said standards.
6. An unwind stand according to claim 2 wherein said base roller support means is spaced slightly from each side of said support member to enable limited angular movement of said member relative to said base, said support member having longitudinally extending downwardly opening channel means in the bottom thereof adjacent each end, a roller disposed on a fixed vertical axis on said base and fitted in said channel means adjacent one end of said member and constituting a pivot for said member, an eccentrically mounted cam roller fitted in said channel means adjacent the other end of said member and swingable about a fixed axis on said base for swinging said member about said pivot, and means for swinging said cam roller.
7. An unwind stand for a web roll comprising a stationary base, a horizontally disposed support member, means mounting the support member on the base for angular movements about a vertical axis, operating means for effecting the angular movements of the support member, means mounting the support member on the base for rectilinear movements therealong and including a single guideway means provided on each side of the support member, operating means for effecting the rectilinear movements of the support member, a pair of cooperating standards having complementary meansto support a web roll therebetween, means carried by the standards and cooperating with the guideway means on the support member for mounting the standards on the support member for movement toward and away from each other on the support member independent of the movements of the support member and operating means for etfecting said movements of the standards.
8. An unwind stand for a web roll comprising a stationary base, a horizontally disposed support member, means mounting the support member on the base for angular movements about a vertical axis, operating means for effecting the angular movements of the support member, means mounting the base support member on the base for rectilinear movements and including a single guide means provided on each side of the support member, operating means for effecting the rectilinear movements of the support member, a pair of cooperating standards having complementary means to support a web roll therebetween, means carried by the standards and structurally cooperating with the guide means provided on the support member for mounting the standards on the support member for movement toward and away from each other on the support member independent of the movements of the support member and operating means for etfecting said movements of the standards.
9. An unwind stand for a web roll comprising a stationary base, a horizontally disposed support member, means mounting the support member on the base for angular movements about a vertical axis, operating means for eifecting the angular movements of the support member, said support member having opposing sides, a single guide means provided on each side and extending longitudinally of the support member, brackets upstanding from the base, means carried by said brackets and engaging the guide means so that the support member is mounted on the base for rectilinear movements, operating means for effecting the rectilinear movements of the support member, a pair of cooperating standards having complementary means to support a web roll therebetween, said standards having side portions disposed alongside the op posing sides of the support member, means carried by the side portions and engaging said guide means for movement of the standards towards and away from each other on the support member independent of the movements of the support member and operating means for effecting said movements of the standards.
10. An unwind stand for a web roll comprising a stationary base, a horizontally disposed support member, means mounting the support member on the base for angular movements about a vertical axis, operating means for elfecting the angular movements of the support member, said support member having opposing sides, a single guide means provided on each side and extending longitudinally of the support member, brackets upstanding from the base, means carried by said brackets and engaging the guide means so that the support member is mounted on the base for rectilinear movements, operating means for effecting the rectilinear movements of the support member, a pair of cooperating standards having complementary means to support a web roll therebetween, said stand ards having side portions disposed alongside the opposing sides of the support member, means carried by the side portions and engaging said guide means for movement of the standards towards and away from each other on the support member independent of the movements of the support member and operating means for effecting said movements of the standards, said means on the brackets upstanding from the base and the means on the side portions of the standards comprising rollers disposed in rolling contact with the guide means.
11. An unwind stand for a web roll comprising a stationary base, a horizontally disposed support member, means mounting the support member on the base for angular movements about a vertical axis, operating means for eifecting the angular movements of the support member,
said support member having opposing sides, a single guide means provided on each side and extending longitudinally of the support member, brackets upstanding from the base, means carried by said brackets and engaging the guide means so that the support member is mounted on the base for rectilinear movements, operating means for efiecting the rectilinear movements of the support member, a pair of cooperating standards having complementary means to support a web roll therebetween, said standards having side portions disposed alongside the opposing sides of the support member, means carried by the side portions and engaging said guide means for movement of the standards towards and away from each other on the support member independent of the movements of the support member and operating means for eifecting said movements of the standards, said guide means comprising a single longitudinally extending groove in each side of the support member, said means on the brackets upstanding from the base including rollers disposed in the grooves and said means on the side portions of the standards including rollers disposed in the grooves.
12. The invention of claim 11, wherein said rollers on the brackets are disposed in the grooves to permit lateral movement of the support member relative to the base and means carried by the side portions of the standards preventing lateral movement of the standards relative to the support member.
13. The invention of claim 12, wherein said last means includes bearing means carried by the side portions of the standards and bearing against the sides of the support member.

An unwind stand for a web roll comprising a stationary base, a horizontally disposed support member having opposing sides, each of said sides being provided with a single longitudinally extending groove, said grooves being in alignment transversely of the longitudinal axis of the support member, brackets upstanding from the base, rollers carried by the brackets and disposed in the grooves thereby permitting rectilinear movements of the support member relative to the base, means for effecting said rectilinear movements of the support member, means mounting the support member on the base for angular movements about a vertical axis, means for effecting said angular movements of the support member, a pair of cooperating standards having opposing side portions disposed alongside the opposing sides of the support member, rollers carried by said side portions and disposed in the grooves, means carried by the side portions of the standards preventing lateral movement of the standards relative to the support member, said standards having complementary means to support a web roll therebetween, and means for moving said standards on the support member in direction toward and away from each other.
15. An unwind stand for a web roll comprising a stationary base, a horizontaily disposed support member having opposing sides, each of said sides being provided with a single longitudinally extending groove, said grooves being in alignment transversely of the longitudinal axis of the support member, brackets upstanding from the base, rollers carried by the brackets and disposed in the grooves thereby permitting rectilinear movements of the support member relative to the base, means for efiecting said rectilinear movements of the support member, means mounting the support member on the base for angular movements about a vertical axis, means for effecting said angular movements of the support member, a pair of cooperating standards having opposing side portions disposed alongside the opposing sides of the support member, rollers carried by said side portions and disposed in the grooves, means carried by the side portions of the standards preventing lateral movement of the standards relative to the support member, said standards having complementary means to support a web roll therebetween, means for moving said standards on the support member in direction toward and away from each other, said means for moving the standards toward and away from each other comprising fixed nuts on the standards and an elongated, rotatable rod having oppositely threaded portions threadingly engaging said nuts and power means for rotating said rod.

An unwind stand for a web roll comprising a stationary base, a horizontally disposed support member having opposing sides, each of said sides being provided with a single longitudinally extending groove, said grooves being in alignment transversely of the longitudinal axis of the support member, brackets upstanding from the base, rollers carried by the brackets and disposed in the grooves thereby permitting rectilinear movements of the support member relative to the base, means for effecting said rectilinear movements of the support member, means mounting the support member on the base for angular movements about a vertical axis, means for effecting said angular movements of the support member, a pair of cooperating standards having opposing side portions disposed alongside the opposing sides of the support member, rollers carried by said side portions and disposed in the grooves, means carried by the side portions of the standards preventing lateral movement of the standards relative to the support member, said standards having complementary means to support a web roll therebetween, means for moving said standards on the support member in direction toward and away from each other, said means for moving the support member rectilinearly relative to the base comprising a prime mover, a screw rod actuated by the prime mover and a nut engaged by the screw rod and structurally associated with the support member.
17. The invention of claim 16, wherein said nut is connected to the support member for movement about a vertical axis and the screw rod is connected to the prime mover by a self aligning bearing and a double universal joint so as to permit the angular movements of the support member.

An unwind stand for a web roll comprising a stationary base, a horizontally disposed support member having opposing sides, each of said sides being provided with a single longitudinally extending groove, said grooves being in alignment transversely of the longitudinal axis of the support member, brackets upstanding from the base, rollers carried by the brackets and disposed in the grooves thereby permitting rectilinear movements of the support member relative to the base, means for efiecting said rectilinear movements of the support member, means mounting the support member on the base for angular movements about a vertical axis, means for effecting said angular movements of the support member, a pair of cooperating standards having opposing side portions disposed alongside the opposing sides of the support member, rollers carried by said side portions and disposed in the grooves, means carried by the side portions of the standards preventing lateral movement of the standards relative to the support member, said standards having complementary means to support a web roll therebetween, means for moving said standards on the support member in direction toward and away from each other, said means for effecting the angular movements of the support member comprising the provision of a first slot in the underside of the support member adjacent one end, and the provision of a corresponding second slot on the underside of the support member and extending through the opposing end, a fixed pivot disposed in the first slot and an eccentrically actuated means mounted in the second slot and means for operating said eccentrically mounted means, said slots being formed longitudinally of the support member to accommodate the rectilinear movements of the support member.
19. The invention of claim 18, wherein said fixed pivot includes a roller engaging the sides of the first slot and said eccentn'cally actuated means includes a roller engaging the sides of the second slot.
20. The invention of claim 18, wherein said means for operating said eccentrically actuated means includes an eccentrically mounted roller in said second slot, an arm radially projecting therefrom and having an outer end, a transverse screw rod, a travelling screw on said screw rod, means connecting said outer end of the arm to said screw and means for rotating said screw rod.

Claims (1)

1. IN AN UNWIND STAND FOR A WEB ROLL, INCLUDING A HORIZONTAL STATIONARY BASE, A HORIZONTALLY DISPOSED SUPPORT MEMBER, A PAIR OF UPSTANDING OPPOSED CHUCK STANDARDS, MEANS MOVABLY MOUNTING SAID SUPPORT MEMBER ON SAID BASE AND SAID STANDARDS ON SAID SUPPORT MEMBER FOR MOVEMENT RELATIVE TO EACH OTHER , AND MEANS FOR MOVING SAID STANDARDS RELATIVE TO EACH OTHER ON SAID SUPPORT MEMBER AND FOR MOVING SAID SUPPORT MEMBER ON SAID BASE, THE IMPROVEMENT IN SAID MOUNTING MEANS COMPRISING SUPPORT MEANS ON EACH SIDE OF SAID BASE, SUPPORT MEANS ON EACH SIDE OF SAID STANDARDS, AND A SINGLE GUIDEWAY MEANS ON EACH SIDE OF SAID SUPPORT MEMBER AND RESPECTIVELY COOPERATIVE WITH AND SUPPORTED BY SAID BASE SUPPORT MEANS FOR RELATIVE RECTILINEAR MOVEMENT AND ALSO RESPECTIVELY SUPPORTING SAID STANDARD SUPPORT MEANS FOR RECTILINEAR MOVEMENT THEREOF RELATIVE TO EACH OTHER.
