(Cl. 229-44) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A thick-walled cardboard box having a hinge with staggered interleaving portions extending between the meeting edges of the body and cover of the box and integrally connected to the inner surface of each of the walls of the box.
This invention relates to a cardboard box of the type having relatively thick walls.
In the hinging together of two sections of a cardboard box in which the walls are thick, the use of a hinge having the axis of the pintle in the same plane as the plane of the plates often presents difficulties in that the outer edges of the walls contact and limit the opening of the cover section of the box. Accordingly, in the present invention I have provided offset portions to move the pivotal connection of the hinge plates outwardly of the box so that when the cover is swung from the body section, the outer edges of the box will not contact.
One of the objects of this invention is to provide a thick-walled cardboard box in which the hinge is of such construction that the cover section of the box will not Contact the body section as the cover is swung from closed to open position.
Another object of the invention is to provide the offset portions in staggered relation and spaced so as to interfit one with the other as the hinge is swung about its pivotal connection.
Another object of the invention is to provide a metal hinge which will be of such construction that it may be secured to the box by a pressing or striking operation.
Another object of the invention is to provide a hinge box which will, by reason of its hinge, move either into closed or open position by reason of the relative position of the cover and body sections, the single spring acting to provide both functions.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction as will be rnOre fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the box with the hinge attached in open position;
FIG. 2 is a sectional view showing the cover and body sections and hinge in a closed position; and
FIG. 3 is a perspective view of the hinge.
With reference to the drawings, designates the body section and 11 the cover section of the cardboard box. The body section has a bottom wall 12, vertical side walls 13 and 14, a front wall 15 and a rear wall 16, all of which walls 13, 14, 15 and 16 are perpendicular to the bottom wall 12 and are of a relatively thick material. The cover section has a top wall 17, opposite side Walls 18 and 19, a front wall 20 and a rear wall 22. The vertical walls 18, 19, 20 and 21 are perpendicular to the top wall 17 and also are of a corresponding relatively thick construction.
The hinge is designated generally 25 and comprises plates 26 and 27, each of which is provided with a plurality of openings 28 and 29. A plurality of prongs 30 and 31 project from the peripheral edge of each of these openings in a form sometimes referred to as a ros ette and are slightly outwardly flared from a center "Ice axis of the opening so as to incline outwardly away from each other, as seen in dotted lines in FIG. 2, as they are forced into the box. These prongs are securing means for fastening the plates along the inner rear surfaces 32 and 33 of the rear walls 16 and 21. The plates 26 and 27 are preferably set into the rear surfaces 32 and 33 so as to be flush with the surfaces of these rear walls in which position they are secured by the prongs 30, 31.
The hinge plate 26 is provided at spaced locations lengthwise of the plate 26 with offset portions 36 extending at an angle to the plane of the plate 26 providing spaces such as 37 between these offset portions, while the plate 27 is provided at spaced locations lengthwise along the plate 27 with offset portions 38 extending at an angle to the plane of plate 27 providing spaces 39 between these offset portions as may be seen in FIG. 3 of the drawing. The ends of each of the offset portions 36 are rolled into an eye as at 40 and the ends of each of the offset portions 38 are rolled into an eye as at 41. These offset portions are staggered so that the offset portion 36 extends into the space 39 while the offset portion 38 extends into the space 37, and the eyes of each of the offset portions 40 and 41 are aligned to receive the pintle pin 42 which extends through all of the eyes hingedly relating the two plates 26 and 27 together.
One or both of the adjacent edges 45 and 46 of the rear walls 16 and 21 are cut away at the location of the hinge to accommodate the offset portions so that the offset portions 36 and 38 extend between the edges 45, 46 of the rear walls 16 and 21 of the body and cover sections of the box, and in this manner it will be apparent that the axis of the hinge pintle 42 is located sufliciently outwardly of the box so that when the cover section 11 is raised or swung from the body section 10, the edges of the rear wall will not contact but will clear each other.
Openings 48 and 49 are provided in each of the plates 26 and 27 forming lips 50 and 51. The inturned edges 52 and 53 of a C spring 54 may be hooked over these lips and the spring will have a tendency to pull the hinges and the sections to which they are attached into closed position as shown in FIG. 2 or which will, when the plates 26, 27 are swung passed substantially 45 one to the other, tend to swing the cover to open position relative to the body section into the position shown in FIG. 1.
The offset portions 36 and 38 by reason of their arrangement permit the hinge plates 26 and 27 to be swung until each offset portion contacts the edge of the opening in the hinge plate opposite it, which contact will provide a limit for the plates to be swung in this direction. However, this limit is such that the spring 54 may be easily attached to the hinge plates when in such position and this is a position in which the body section and the cover section are assembled with the hinge as shown in my Patent 3,121,909 dated Feb. 25, 1964.
I claim:
1. In a cardboard box, a body section and a cover section, each section having vertically disposed thick rear walls with their edges substantially parallel, a metal plate extending along the inner surface of the rear wall of each section, each plate having a plurality of holes along its length with a plurality of integral projections along the edge of each hole embedded in the rear wall over which the plate extends, said plates having at their adjacent edges, longitudinally spaced portions extending angularly outwardly between the edges of the rear walls of the sections with the portions on both plates staggered with reference to the portions on the other plate so that the portions on one plate are located at the spaces between portions in the other plate and hinge eyes on each of said portions, a pintle pin hingedly connecting said hinge eyes, each plate having intermediate its length an opening providing a lip, an arcnate spring with inturned ends engaging said lips and urging said plates in a box opening or box closing direction depending upon the relative position of said sections.
2. In a cardboard box, a body section and a cover section, each section having vertically disposed thick rear Walls with their edges substantially parallel, a metal plate extending along the inner surface of the rear wall of each section, each plate having a plurality of integral projections embedded in the rear wall over which the plate extends, said plates having at their adjacent edges, longitudinally spaced portions extending angularly outwardly between the edges of the rear walls of the sections with the portions on both plates staggered with reference to the portions on the other plate so that the portions on one 4 other plate and hinge eyes on each of said portions, a pintle pin hingedly connecting said hinge eyes, each plate having intermediate its length an opening providing a lip, an arcuate spring with inturned ends engaging said lips and urging said plates in a box opening or box closing direction depending upon the relative position of said sections.

1. IN A CARDBOARD BOX, A BODY SECTION AND A COVER SECTION, EACH SECTION HAVING VERTICALLY DISPOSED THICK REAR WALLS WITH THEIR EDGES SUBSTANTIALLY PARALLEL, A METAL PLATE EXTENDING ALONG THE INNER SURFACE OF THE REAR WALL OF EACH SECTION, EACH PLATE HAVING APLURALITY OF HOLES ALONG ITS LENGTH WITH A PLURALITY OF INTEGRAL PROJECTIONS ALONG THE EDGE OF EACH HOLE EMBEDDED IN THE REAR WALL OVER WHICH THE PLATE EXTENDS, SAID PLATES HAVING AT THEIR ADJACENT EDGES, LONGITUDINALLY SPACED PORTIONS EXTENDING ANGULARLY OUTWARDLY BETWEEN THE EDGES OF THE REAR WALLS OF THE SECTIONS WITH THE PORTIONS ON BOTH PLATES STAGGERED WITH REFERENCE TO THE PORTIONS ON THE OTHER PLATE SO THAT THE PORTIONS ON ONE PLATE ARE LOCATED AT THE SPACES BETWEEN PORTIONS IN THE OTHER PLATE AND HINGE EYES ON EACH OF SAID PORTIONS, A PINTLE PIN HINGEDLY CONNECTING SAID HINGE EYES, EACH PLATE HAVING INTERMEDIATE ITS LENGTH AN OPENING PROVIDING A LIP, AN ARCUATE SPRING WITH INTURNED ENDS ENGAGING SAID LIPS AND URGING SAID PLATES IN A BOX OPENING OR BOX CLOSING DIRECTION DEPENDING UPON THE RELATIVE POSITION OF SAID SECTIONS.
