Description

Nirn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL MORITZ SCHMIDT, OF BERLIN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO THE FIRM OF E. RICHTER, OF LILLE, FRANCE.
METHOD OF PRODUCING WATER=MARKSa GPECIFTCATION forming Application filed April 4, 1885.
part of Letters Patent No. 334,199, dated January 12, 1886, Serial No. 161,250. (No specimens.) Patented in England October 11, 1884, No. 13,455, and in Belgium February 16. 1885, No. 67,726.
of Prussia, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Producing ater-Lines or ater-Marks on Paper, (for which Letters Patent have been granted to me in Belgium, No. 67.726, dated ro February 16, 1885,) of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object an improved method of producing what are known as water-lines or water-marks on paper, and
differs from those heretofore practiced chiefly in that the lines or marks are impressed upon the paper after it is calendered or printed, and is designed to produce a cheaper process of marking the same.
To this end the letters, words, coats of arms, lines, or other devices which are to form the mark are drawn or marked on thin paper, and this pasted on card-board of, say, one millimeter in thickness. The drawing or impression is then neatly cut out and again pasted upon card-board of, say, three millimeters in thickness. A thin sheet of paper is lastly pasted over the lines, marks, or devices so formed, and the whole submitted to heavy pressure.
The plate thus obtained now serves as a pressing-plate for the paper which is to be waterlined or watermarked, and this is effected by placing the paper upon the said plate and passing the whole through a calendering-machine. The paper is then lifted off the plate, and will be found to be lined or marked.
The plate (or rilievo) can be used for producing a considerable number of lines or marks.
I claim- 1. The method herein described of produc ing Water-lines or water-marks on paper after the same is calendered or printed, which consists in preparing a'pressing-plate or rilievo of the design on thin paper and card-board,
and passing the paper to be waterlined or watermarked with the plate or rilievo through a calenderingmachine, substantially as set forth.
2. The method herein described of preparing water-lines or water-marks on paper after the same is calendered or printed, which consists in drawing or marking the designs on thin paper, pasting it on thin card-board, cutting out the design or impression and pasting it again on thin pasteboard, then pasting a thin sheet of paper over the design and submitting the whole to heavy pressure, and finally passing the paper to be waterlined or watermarked with the plate or rilievo through a calendering-machine, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CARL MORITZ SCHMIDT.
