STEERING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,923, dated January 5, 1886.

To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN H. COX and E. S. WILLEY, citizens of the UnitedA States, residing at Fairmount, in the county of Somerset and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Steering Apparatuses, of which the following is a specification.
Ourinvention relates to asteering apparatus for vessels; and it consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings hereto anneXed,Figure lis a top view of the steering apparatus. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross section on the line x x of Fig. l.
The letter A designates the deck of a vessel; B, the stern-post; U, the rudder-post, and O the rudder. A lever, D, crosses the rudderpost and is attached thereto. A right-andleft-hand screw, E, turns freely in two bearings, F F, and a hand-wheel, G, is mounted on the end of the screw. A nut, H, is on the one part, and a nut, I, on the other part of the screw, whereby when the screw turns one way the two nuts will advance toward each other, and when it turns the other Way the nuts will separate or recede from cach other.
A feature of our invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of the nuts and rods which connect them with the rudder-lever D. Each nut has two arms, a b, which project in opposite directions. A rod, J, passes through and is made fast to one arm, a, of the forward nut, H, and extends to one arm, a, of the rear nut, I, through which it passes loosely. Between these arms of the two nuts is a fixed bearing or support, c, through which also the rod J slides endwise. A rod, J', has one end jointed at d to the rod J, just described, and the other end is jointed at e to one end of the rudder-lever D. A rod, L, has one end made fast to the other arm, b, of the rear nut, I, andV .extends to and passes loosely through the arm b of the forward nut, H. Between these said two arms is a iiXed bearing or support, c', through which this rod slides in the same way as the rod first described. A rod, L', has one end pivoted at f to the said last-described rod L, and the other 5o end is jointed atg to one end of the rudderlever.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the forward nut, H, in moving carries a rod, J, which is sustained and guided loosely by the rear nut, I. In other words, each nut by one arm carries one rod, while by the other arm it sustains and guides another rod, which the other nut carries. By this arrangement of parts it will be seen that when the hand-wheel 6o G is revolved one Way the rudder will be turned in a certain direction, and when revolved the opposite way the rudder will be turned in the opposite direction.
We do not claim the combination of aright- 65 and-left-hand screw with a rudder; but,
Having described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- A steering apparatus having in combina- 7o tion a rudder-post provided with a cross-lever, D, a right-and-lefthand screw mounted in bearings to turn freely, a nut, H, on one part and a nut, I, on the other part of the screw, and each nut having two arms, which project in opposite directions, and two jointed rods, each jointed to an opposite end of the said cross-lever and carried by one arm of one nut and supported and guided by an arm of the other nut, as shown and described.
