SPECIFECATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,702, dated January 5, 1886.

Be it known that I, CHARLES VILLENEUVE, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Boise City, in the county of Ada, Idaho Territory, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Horse-Powers, of which the following is a specifica ion, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention has relation to improvements in horse powers; and the novelty consists in the peculiar1 construction and combination of parts, substantially asv hereinafter fully set forth,and specifically pointed out in the claims.
My invention has for its object to provide a horse-power of that class known to the art in which a belt is employed to communicate motion from the master-wheel to the apparatus or machinery to be operated; to provide means which shall be simple, strong, and durable in construction and thoroughly effective in operation; which can be very readily and expe ditiously taken apart for transportation and set up or put together again for operation; which shall be very light in construction and readily repaired when the parts shall have become broken, and which can be manufactured at a minimum of cost.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a horsepower embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical scctional view on the line x of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detached View of the base with the bear ing-cap, and Fig. 4 is a detailed sectional View of a portion of the rim of the master- Wheel.
Referring to the drawings, in which like letters of reference in the several figures denote corresponding parts, A designates the base of myimproved horse-power, which preferably consists of foursupporting-beams, a, having inclined upper faces which meet at a common center, and to which a bearingplate, a', is secured.
B designates a cap-piece mounted so as to rotate on the plate c and on a shaft or pin, b, secured in the base A, the said cap-piece having a series of sockets, b, cut or formed around its periphery for the reception of the inner ends of the radial arms of the masterwheel C. The cap B has a protecting-plate, c, and is held in place on the shaft b by a nut, c', or by any other suitable means. The masterf, which are secured to the beams a of saidA base. The radial arrnsE ofthe master-Wheel have tenons c at their ends, the inner ends of which fit in the socket b of the cap B and the outer ends in Inortises in the outer rim, D.
The outer rim, D, is made of a series of segmental bars, D', a number of protecting-plates, D, which bear on the lower surface of the bars D and lap over the joints between the same, and a number of strengthening plates, D3, fitted over the joints between the bars D and the plates D2 on the upper and lower surfaces, respectively. The plates D2 project a slight distance beyond the vertical face of the bars D, and serveto retain the beltGthereon; or the bars may he made slightly concave, and the plates D2 D3 are bolted to the bars so as to permit their ready removal for the purpose of taking the wheel apart for transportation. The supportingtrack F is also made in sections F, which are bolted or otherwise secured to plates IT2 F3. The radial arms or spokes ofthe master-wheel pass between the sections F, which are separated for this purpose, and the circumferential plates F2 F3 are arranged on the upper and lower faces of the sections F. The plates la"2 are left solid and rest on the frictionrollersf ofthe base, while the plates l?3 are slotted or cut away on their inner periphery, as 'at g, to permit the radial arms to move up and down therein for a purpose presently described.
G designates the draft-bar, secured to the master-wheel so as to permit the draft-animal to walk inside ofthe wheel between two of the spokes or arms thereof; and, if desired. a number of these bars may be provided, according to the power required.
To take the wheel apart for the purpose of transporting the same, the nut c is removed from the bolt or shaft of the base and the capcover plate c removed, when the outer rim, D, drops down to the ground or on supports provided therefor, the radial arms or spokes E working in the slots g of the upper plate of the track or wheel F. The plates D3 D2 of the rim Dare now removed, the plate F3 of the supporting-wheel F removed, and the arms or IOO spokes E disconnected from the whee1s,'the sections of Which'are'then'packed `for ltransportation.
The master-Wheel can be readily and quickly taken apart for transportation and very conveniently put together, and the base A and its attached cap are very readily transported.
Various slight changes in the form and proportion of parts can be made without departing from the principle of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a horse-power, the combination of a base, a cap rotatively mounted thereon. and a sectional 'master-wheel having its spokes or arms fitted in the cap, substantially as described.
' 2. In a horsepower, the combination of' a base, a cap rotatively mounted thereon, a master-Wheel having its arms fitted in the cap, a supporting wheel or track secured to the mas ter-Wheel, and friction-rollers on which the supporting-.wheel bears, substantially as debase, ,a cap mounted thereon, a sectional master-wheel having it's arms itted in the cap, a sectional track secured to the master-Wheel, and a series of rollers mounted on the base and bearing against the track, substantially as described.
4.- Inahorse-power and in combination with the base thereof, a master-Wheel comprising a series of segmental bars detachably itted togetherv and removable protecting and brace plates securedk over the joints between said bars, substantially as described.
5. In a horse-power, the combination, with abase and a master-Wheel mounted thereon, of a track secured to the master-wheel and comprising segmental bars and cirou mferential securingplates, and a series of supporting-rollers, substantially as described.
