ISAAC O. RICHARDSON, OF NASHUA, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
COMBINED HEATING AND COOKING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,672, dated January 5, 1886.
Application filed June 11, 1884. Serial No. 134,544. (No modelJ To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC O. RICHARDSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashua, in the county of Hillsborough and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Heating and Cooking Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
It is the purpose of my invention to provide a simple, safe, and effective apparatus, whereby the distinct processes of heating and cooking may be carried on either separately or simultaneously and at different points distant from each other and from the point of generation of heat, while at the same time hot water is supplied at a third point having any desired location.
It is also the purpose of my invention to provide such apparatus with means whereby the entire available heat generated may be distributed simultaneously to all the points where it is to be employed, or may be directed to and concentrated upon any one or more than one of said points.
To these ends, therefore, my invention consists in the combination, with-aheating-boiler, of one or more heating-coils,one or more cooking-coils, and a receiving and returning tank located at any suitable distance from each other, the tank being connected by a receiving-pipe directly with the boiler and by distributing-pipes with the coils, the latter having a common return-pipe which discharges into the boiler near its bottom, whereby, the boiler and pipes being filled with water, and the tank filled wholly or in part, the generation of heat beneath the boiler will produce a rapid circulation of hot or boiling water through the tank and coils and back to the boiler, where the lost caloric will be supplied.
My invention also consists in the combination, with a heating-boiler and a system of heating-coils or of heating and cooking coils, of a suitable distributing-tank connecting with each coil or with each system of coils, ofsuitable shut-offs or valves, whereby any one or all of said coils may be thrown out of the circulation, and the entire available heat generated within the boiler be directed toward and concentrated upon any one or more than one of said coils less than the entire number, or, if desired, the whole number of coilsbe thrown out and the circulation maintained between the boiler and the tank only.
My invention also consists in the several novel features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, and definitely pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings forming part of this application, Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in vertical section illustrating the relative arrangement of the parts. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken through the case of the cooking-coil in a plane just above said coil.
A in said drawings indicates a metallic boiler of any suitable form and dimensions. although it will be found in practice that a small fiat boiler having a fire-surface which is large relatively to its capacity will be preferable. It may be mounted upon an arch or supported in any convenient manner.
B represents a tank, which may be of any suitable material, though metal is to be preferred. It may be located at any desired point, either remote from or near to the boiler, as convenience may require. This tank has an open top, and may be provided witha removable cover, to prevent unnecessary loss of heat. It is directly connected with the boiler A by means of a pipe, 0, which enters the tank at or near its bottom and opens into the boiler through its top.
D indicates an ordinary radiating-coil such as is used for heating apartments and similar purposes. This coil is represented in the drawings as being in close proximity to the tank; but it should be noted that, within practical limits, it may be placed at any distance from the tank, as well as from the boiler. This coil is supplied from the tank through a continuation, a, of its upper branch, which enters said tank through its bottom, although it may, if desired, pass through the side of the tank. A continuation, D, of the lower branch of the coil D returns to the boiler A, and enters the same at or near its bottom.
E represents a coil which is adapted forcooking purposes, and which may be of any desired form and size-such, for example, as that shown, consisting of a horizontally-an ranged series of parallel communicating branches, or a flat or ascending spiral or any, other form adapted to the peculiar circum stances of the case. This coil, which, like the radiating-coil, may be placed at any dis tance from the tank B, is provided with a surrounding casing, F, upon the floor of which it lies, said casing being provided with a cover, F whereby the cooking-vessel may be wholly inclosed, the loss of heat prevented, and the escape of odors avoided. The two extremities of the heating-coil project from one end of this casing, and are connected with each other by a communicating pipe. E. The coil is connected to the tank B by a pipe, G, opening from the bottom of said tank, and its other extremity is provided with a continuation, I, which is carried to and tapped into the return pipe D.
In the receiving-branch e of the cooking-coil E, and between the latter and the distributingpipe G, I place a shut-off or valve, 6, and in the communicating pipe E, between the pipe G and the return-pipe or continuation I, is placed a similar valve. Upon one or the other of these valve-stems may be placed a collar,
f, the purpose of which will be presently set forth. As shown in the drawings, this collar is upon the stem of the valve 6; but it may be placed upon the stem of the valve e and, finally, while it may prove desirable to employ such a collar, I do not regard it as an essential and necessary feature of my invention. A third valve, 0 is placed in the return-pipe D at any convenient point between the radiating-coil and the point where the pipe I is tapped into it.
The tank B may be supplied with a suitable draw-off or faucet, K. Let water now be poured into the tank Bin sufficient quantities to fill the boiler A, together with the several coils D and E, and to partly or entirely fill said tank. Heat being then applied to the boiler, it is evident that a circulation will be set up, proceeding, primarily, from the boiler by way of the pipe 0 to the tank B, thence by the pipe a to the radiating-coil D, and at the same time to the Cooking coil by way of pipe G. From both coils the return is made to the boiler by way of pipes D and I, respectively, which unite before reaching the boiler. As the heat rises, this circulation becomes extremely rapid, and by protecting the conducting-pipes by a non-conducting covering the water may be delivered at the coils at or nearly at a temperature of 212 Fahrenheit, or even somewhat higher, if necessary.
Let it now be supposed thatv it is necessary to use the cooking-coil E only. By closing the valve 6 the radiatingcoil is at once thrown out of circulation, while the flow from the boiler to the tank, thence through the cooking-coil and back to the boiler, goes on without interruption. In a similar manner, by opening valve 6 and closing valves 6 and 6 the cooking-coil is cut out of the circulation and the whole available heat concentrated upon the coil D. It will thus be seen that by this apparatus a great economy of fuel is practicable, and, moreover, the heating and cooking can be carried on at a num ber of distant and separate points with a small fire without necessity of watching the apparatus constantly, without the slightest danger of explosion, and with great comparative safety to combustible structures suchas barns and other farm buildings-since the boiler and arch may be placed in a cellar, or in a separate Outhouse at a distance, or in any other suitable locality.
The function of the collar f upon the stern of one of the valves 6 or c is to automatically prevent the entire closing of the valve, leaving a passage, whereby in case all the valves should be carelessly closed at the same time the boiler shall be supplied with water from the tank as fast as required to supplement the loss by vaporization.
It will be seen that a series of separate coils, either radiating-coils for warming apartments or cooking-coils, or even a series of each, can easily be supplied from a single boiler without in any manner departing from my invention.
It will be understood that the function of the valve (2 is to compel a circulation through the cookingcoil E, when it is desired to use the latter. If this valve were left open, the water would naturally flow from the supplypipe G through the valve to the pipe I, and thence to the boiler. By closing the valve, however, the water is compelled to traverse the coil, as will be readily apparent.
By means of the draw-off K, attached to the tank, hot water may at any time be drawn therefrom in abundance.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. In a combined heating and cooking ap paratus, the combination, with a closed boiler, of a tank directly connected therewith by a supply-pipe, radiating and cooking circulation-coils located at suitable points and each supplied from said tank, a return-pipe to the boiler with which each coil is connected, and valves whereby any one or all of said coils may be cut out of circulation, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. in a combined heating and cooking apparatus, the combination, with a closed boiler, a supply-tank directly connected therewith, and heating and cooking coils each connected with said tank and with a return-pipe leading to the boiler, of valves whereby each-coil may be cut out ofcirculation, one ofsaid valves having a collar upon its stem, whereby it is prevented from closing wholly, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, with the radiating-coil D and cooking-coil E, each connected with the tank B and with the return-pipe D, of the valves '6, c and e, the valve 0 having the collar f, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ISAAC O. RICHARDSON.
