Description

July 25, 1967 c. ALLISON SCROLL BENDER Filed Nov 9, 1964 INVENTOR. j 672% United States Patent 3,332,267 SCROLL BENDER Clifford Allison, Mineral Point, Pa., assignor t0 Allison- Adams Manufacturing Company, Nanty-Glo, Pa. Filed Nov. 9, 1964, Ser. No. 409,749 1 Claim. (Cl. 72-147) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A tool assembly adapted to be associated with a vise for enabling a scroll to be manually formed in a strap workpiece, the assembly including an upstanding slotted die for forming the initial convolution and diametn'c inner end of the scroll together with a spirally curved member for association with the die for forming a second convolution of the spiral scroll formed in the strap workpiece.
The present invention generally relates to a scroll bender in the form of a special tool for forming a spiral scroll in a strap of metal or the like.
An object of the present invention is to provide a tool assembly adapted to be associated with a vise for enabling a scroll to be manually formed in a strap workpiece, the assembly including an upstanding slotted die for forming the initial convolution and diametric inner end on the scroll together with a spirally curved member for association with the die for forming a second convolution of the spiral scroll formed in the strap workpiece.
Another object of this invention is to provide a scroll bender which is simple in construction, long lasting, efficient and easy to use, versatile and relatively inexpensive to manufacture.
Still another object of the present invention is to provide a scroll bending tool which may have various interchangeable components for enabling different spiral configurations to be formed.
These and other objects of the present invention will be more fully realized and understood from the following detailed description when taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawing wherein:
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view illustrating part of the scroll bender with the first convolution being formed;
FIGURE 2 is a perspective of one form of spiral member on which the second convolution may be formed;
FIGURE 3 is a perspective view of the manner of forming the second convolution;
FIGURE 4 is a perspective view of a second form of spiral member; and
FIGURE 5 is a perspective view of the member of FIGURE 4 being used to form a second convolution.
Referring now specifically to the drawings, the scroll bender includes a slotted die assembly 12 and a guide or die 14 curved in a spiral manner for use in forming a spiral scroll 16 in a strap 18. The slotted die assembly 12 includes a base plate 20 having a depending lug 22 on one end thereof for clamping engagement by a suitable clamp such as a bench vise 24 thus holding plate 20 on a supporting surface 26. The bench vise 24 is operated in a conventional manner and includes a handle 28 for manipulation thereof.
Attached to the base plate 20 is an upright stand or die 30 having a longitudinal diametric slot 32 therethrough for receiving one end of the strap 18 and the strap is then wrapped one complete turn around die 30 which has one small part 31 and one large part 33 and the member 14 is then brought into play.
The spiral member 14 includes a spiral guide and forming member 34 having a spiral inner edge 36 and a spiral outer edge 38 having converging edges to form a spiral member 14 or 14' which are the same except for the curvature and space between the inner and outer edge thereof.
The base plate 20 has a bore or socket 40 formed therein for registry with an aperture 42 in each spiral member 14 or 14' and a pin 44 is used to maintain the assembly in assembled condition for use in making a scroll by securing the spiral strap forming member 14 with the notched inner end 35 against the end edge of the slot 32.
In using the tool, the die 12 is secured by using a suitable clamp such as vise 24 with the slot 32 then receiving the terminal end of the strap 18. The strap 18 is then wound around the die or slotted stud 30 to form the first convolution as illustrated in FIGURE 1. One of the members 14 or 14' is then secured in place and the second convolution is formed, as illustrated in FIGURES 3 and 5, by bending the strap 18 around the exterior peripheral surface.
The components of the tool may be constructed of any suitable long lasting material such as metal or the like and various sized templates or dies may be constructed for forming scrolls having different characteristics.
The principles of the invention explained in connection with the specific exemplifications thereon will suggest ;many other applications and modifications of the same. It is accordingly desired that, in construing the breadth of the appended claim they shall not be limited to the specific details shown and described in connection with the exemplifications thereof.
What is claimed is:
A device for forming a spiral scroll in a bendable strap comprising a slotted, substantially cylindrical die mounted on a base plate for receiving one end of a strap, said cylindrical die connecting With a peripheral surface means around which the strap is wrapped to form an inner convolution therein, means to guide the strap when a second convolution is formed, said surface means including a spirally curved member having a convex exterior surface :for engaging the strap and also said surface means having a notched inner end to engage an edge of said slotted die, means detachably mounting said curved member on said base plate in fixed position, said base plate including a depending lug thereon for clamping engagement by a wise, and said mounting means including a removable pin extending between the base plate and spiral member, one part of said die being larger than the other.
