TUBE-EXPANDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 333,206, dated December 29, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES DUDLEY, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Linwood, in the county of Atlantic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Adjustable Tube-Ex-- panders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has reference to that class of tube-expanders in which a tapering mandrel or spindle is used in conjunction with rollers placed within the tube to be expanded; and the invention consists in the construction of a suitable frame-work in which the rollers are secured; also, in the construction of the rollers that will admit the same to freely adjust themselves within the tube and bear proper relationship to the tapering mandrel which operates them, and in the arrangement of parts by which the same can be quickly removed and replaced within the frame-work.
I will proceed to describe the construction and operation of my device, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side view showing all of the parts in operative position. Fig. 2 is a front view of the head or cap plate, and showing clearly the positions of the bolts which pass through it to connect with the circular rim within the tube. Fig. 3 is a View of the opposite end of the expander, showing plainly the circular rim again and illustrating the positions occupied by the rolls and-connectingbolts; Fig. 4 is a section upon the line 00 a: of Fig. 3, showing the peculiar construction of the rolls and the manner of holding them. Fig. 5 is a rear view of the cap-plate, showing the form and also the position occupied by the radial slots in which the gudgeons of the rolls lay.

'A tapering mandrel, D, passes through a hole, I), in the cap-plate B and circular rimplate F, thus separating the rolls 0 and cansing the latter to adjust themselves along the inclined face of the tapering mandrel where the rolls are of the larger diameter and bear upon the inclined face of the mandrelD. Gudgeons 0, formed integral with rolls 0, are free to move in radial slots 1) in the rear plate, B, of the cap, and thus the pressure-rolls are free to move and adjust themselves to the face of the incline of the tapering mandrel D. A collar or sleeve, E, of an outer diametric measurement equal to the front capplate, B, receives a bearing against the rear walls of the main cap-plate B, and serves to span any projecting portion of tube that may extend beyond the tube-plate.
In operating this device it issimply necessary to introduce in the tube a suitable size expander, and in which the circular rim-plate F will snugly fit the said tube to be acted upon, and then placing the tapering mandrel therein until the same will expand the rolls 0 to such an extent that they will impinge the inner walls of the tube at the proper point, then by striking the mandrel a sufficiently light blow upon the end extending out of the tube as will cause the expander to so firmly bear against the inside of the tube that will necessitate the revolving of the tapering mandrel by means of a wrench in the usual manner of devices, and thus by repeating the operation of driving in the tapering mandrel D, as explained, and revolving it, as described, will cause the tube to expand to the proper amount.
By the arrangement of parts in an expander for tubes as I have described, a single size may be utilized in a number of tubes of different diameters, for by loosening the connecting-bolts the pressure-rolls can be readily removed, and smaller or larger ones, as the case may require, inserted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim the following:
1. In combination, tapering mandrel D, rolls 0, constructed substantially as described, having integrally-formed gudgeons eat one end and the opposite end countersunk, capplate B, formed in two parts and providedwith having retaining-pins N, connecting-bolts L, having flaring shoulders I, and the rolls 0, having countersink c, for the purposes specified.
