United States Patent 3,330,468 LINED RECORD JACKET John D. Desmond and Joseph J. Hart, both of Philadelphia, Pa., assiguors to Container Corporation of America, Chicago, lll., a corporation of Delaware Filed Aug. 29, 1966, Ser. No. 575,625 1 Claim. (Cl. 229-68) ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A lined record jacket having a paperboard body and an inner film lining secured thereto, one side section of the body having a marginal edge extended beyondthe marginal edge of the opposite side section to facilitate insertion of the record. A method of forming a lined record jacket including conveying the blank of paperboard along two mutually perpendicular paths and securing certain overlapping sections of the blank together as the blank is conveyed along each of the paths.
This invention relates to a lined record jacket having an outer body of paperboard and an inner liner of film secured thereto, the same being suitably provided with a top opening to receive an individual record for storage within the jacket. Additionally, this invention relates to the method of forming such a lined record jacket in an economical manner on conventional carton fabricating (or finishing) equipment.
An object of this invention is to provide a record jacket having an outer protective body of paperboard and an inner liner of film material secured within the paperboard body and having a top opening for receiving therein a flat disk record.
Another object of this invention is to provide a lined record jacket wherein the film lining is secured at only specific areas to the paperboard body to permit the rapid and economical manufacture of such jacket.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved methodof forming a lined record jacket which can be accomplished on conventional carton fabricating (or finishing) equipment.
These and other objects will be more fully understood after referring to the following specification and the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof, wherein:
FIGS. 1a through 1h are sequential top plan views of a series of blanks and liners showing the manner of forming the subject record jacket;
FIG. 2 is an enlarged sectional view, as seen generally from line 22 of FIG. 1, of a finished record jacket;
FIG. 3 is a top plan view of a blank and liner therefor, similar in part to that shown in FIG. 1, of an alternate embodiment of the subject invention.
The subject invention is best seen in FIGS. 1h and 2. The record jacket includes an outer body 12 of shape retaining paperboard and an inner lining 14 of flexible plastic film or the like. The paperboard body 12 includes opposed side walls 16 and 17 which are disposed in substantially parallel closely adjacent relation having bottom and adjacent side edges 20, 21, and 22 hinged together and having an open top edge 24. The lining 14 is disposed within the body jacket and includes spaced panels 26 and 27 which are substantially coextensive with and secured, respectively, to the adjacent side walls 16 and 17 of the record body, and further which are open at top edge 28 in registry with the open body edge 24. The faces 26 and 27 of the lining are secured to the side walls 16 and 17 along substantially linear top and bottom strips of adhesive generally shown in FIGURE 2 along areas indicated at 30, 31, 32, and 33. This locates the inner lining relative to the outer body while yet providing for the ready transfer of air from between them. This permits rapid initial fabrication of the jacket in an expedient manner while further permitting the normal loading and unloading of the jacket with a record without the jacket bulging or the lining clinging to the record.
The subject jacket is formed in the manner indicated in the sequential view in FIG. 1. Thus, a blank 40 of shape retaining paperboard having the side wall panels 16 and 17 hinged together on fold line 42 disposed to travel in a direction parallel to the hinge line 42. Lapping flaps 44 and 46 are hinged to the side wall 16 on hinge lines 45 and 47, respectively. The jacket is fabricated by initially applying to the inside face of side wall 16 the strips of adhesive 30 and 32. The strips of adhesive include center portions across the major section of the side Walls in a direction parallel to the open top edge 24 of the finished jacket and side portions at the ends of the center portions which extend at right angles thereto a short distance less than one quarter the distance across the side wall. A continuous tubular roll of lining material, indicated at 52, is then positioned over the side wall and secured thereto by means of the pre-applied pattern of adhesive and cut to the appropriate length. Thereafter, the opposite side wall adhesive patterns 31 and 33 are applied to the inner face of the side wall 17. Adhesive is also applied to the vertical manufacturers flap 44. The side wall 17 is thereafter folded about its hinge line 42 to adhere said wall to the panel 27 of the tubular film, and the vertical glue flap is similarly folded to overlapping relationship to the side wall 17. At this point, the package is shifted on a right angle attachment (as indicated in FIGS. 1g and 1h) and the horizontal manufacturers flap 46 is coated with adhesive and is folded to overlap the bottom edge of the side Wall 17. This closes the bottom of the paperboard body as well as the bottom of the film liner.
It is possible Where a lining of the subject type is desired to be made on a straight line equipment that the record jacket fabricated according to the view FIG. 1 be rotated about an axis normal to the plane of the paper approximately whereupon the horizontal manufacturers flap 46 is glued and folded closed in a manner similar to the vertical manufacturers flap 44.
It is also possible to form a record jacket similar to 7 that disclosed in FIGS. 1 and 2 by means of a fiat sheet 62 of film, as compared to the tubular film used in the primary embodiment. In such an embodiment, both inside faces of the side walls are coated with adhesive at the appropriate locations 30, 31, 32 and 33, and the film lining 62 is deposited on the faces in registry therewith and is thereby adhered to the faces. The side walls 16 and 17 are then folded relative to one another and secured by means of the overlapping horizontal and vertical manufacturers flaps 44 and 46 in the manner indicated for the primary embodiment.
It can be noted that the top edge 56 of the side wall 16 extends above the top edge of the other side wall 17. This is to permit the easy opening of the jacket, as will be readily understood.
What is claimed is:
A lined record jacket including:
(a) an outer body of paperboard and an inner lining;
(b) said outer body including opposed side walls connected together at the bottom and adjacent side edges and being separate from one another along the horizontal top edge;
(c) said connecting means comprising a hinged connection between the body side walls being integral along one side edge thereof, a second connection comprising a flap hinged to one sidewall along an edge oppositely disposed relative to said hinged connection and a third connection comprising a flap along another edge of said one side wall said flaps being overlapped with an adhesive secured to the other side Wall;
(d) said lining being formed of a flexible plastic film including opposed side wall sections disposed flush against the body side walls and the lining being open adjacent the open top edge of the paperboard body adapted thereby to receive a disk-like record;
(e) said film lining being secured to the opposite side walls by generally straight parallel horizontal strips of adhesive along opposite marginal areas adjacent the horizontal open top and the bottom thereof;
(f) one of said body side walls having a marginal top section which extends beyond the corresponding top section of the opposite side wall and beyond the free open top edges of the film lining.
