TABLET DISPENSER WITH ROTARY. AXIAL INLET-OUTLET TRAP CHAMBER Filed Aug. 18, 1965 P M migwillw I 1.17 r lulllll lllL llllln'y'fl INVENTOR.
United States Patent 3,330,442 TABLET DISPENSER WITH ROTARY, AXIAL INLET-OUTLET TRAP CHAMBER Donal J. OConnor, Chicago, Ill., assignor to Morton International, Inc., Chicago, 111., a corporation of Delaware Filed Aug. 18, 1965, Ser. No. 480,567 5 Claims. (Cl. 221265) This invention relates to improvements in dispensers for tablets such as salt tablets and the like.
The principal objects of the invention are to provide a tablet dispenser which is convenient to use, which accurately delivers a desired number of tablets and which is characterized by its simplicity of construction. The present tablet dispenser involves a minimum number of parts which can be molded from a variety of suitable plastic materials and which can be readily assembled in operative relationship. Manufacturing costs of the tablet dispenser can therefore be maintained at a minimum.
The advantages and special features of the tablet dispenser will be readily apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the drawings wherein:
FIGURE I is a side view of the assembled tablet dispenser with parts broken away to show in section the major parts thereof.
FIG. II is a bottom detailed view of the shell which forms the tablet receptacle.
FIG. III is a detailed plan view of the tablet delivery disk.
FIG. IV is a perspective view of the rotatable knob through which the tablets are dispensed.
Referring to the drawings, the receptacle for the tablets is in the form of a tapered shell having an open top for which there is provided a removable top or cover 11. The cover 11 is of sutficient size to slidably engage the receptacle and to close the opening. The bottom wall 12 of shell 11 is provided with a central aperture 13 and a tablet' discharge opening 14 located adjacent the circumference thereof. An integral shield or tab 15 projects inwardly from the wall of the shell above the discharge opening 14 to prevent tablets from falling therethrough.
The tablet delivery disk 16 is in the form of a circular dome 17 having a plurality of radial projections or tablet fingers 18 which upon rotation of the delivery disk carry a tablet under the shield 15 and into registry with the discharge opening 14. Depending from the central part of the dome 17 is bushing 19 which projects through the central aperture 13 on the bottom wall of shell 11. The bushing 19 in one embodiment of the invention is provided with an opening for reception of a self-tapping screw 25.
The remaining essential component of the tablet dispenser is a manually rotatable cup-shaped dispensing knob 20 having a tablet outlet opening 21 in its bottom. Supported in the top central portion of the dispensing knob, by means of radially extending ribs 22, is a hub 23 which is adapted to be journaled onto bushing 19. In the embodiment shown, four radially extending ribs 22 spaced at 90 angles are employed, although the number of such ribs can be varied, The hub 23 is also provided with a central vertical opening 24 up through which screw 25 extends. The screw 25 is turned up tight so that the dispensing knob is rigidly secured to the bushing 19 so that the tablet delivery disk 16 rotates whenever dispensing knob 20 is rotated. It will be appreciated that the dispensing knob can be rigidly secured to the bushing 19 by other than screw means, such as, for example, by spin welding, ultrasonic sealing or fusion through the use of adhesives. These latter means would obviate the requirement for screw 25. The outside of the dispensing knob 3,330,442 Patented July 11, 1967 ice 20 may be provided with ribs 32 for structural reinforcement and which also assist in turning the knob.
In order to accurately regulate the number of tablets which are dispensed, it is desirable to provide indexing means whereby the dispensing knob 20 can be rotated a definite extent to permit dispensing of only one tablet and the rotation thereafter stopped. In prior art tablet dispensers such indexing means usually involve spring arrangements which, of course, further complicate the construction of the dispenser and increase the manufacturing cost thereof. In the present tablet dispenser the indexing is accomplished by means of a circular boss 26 which depends from the lower surface of the bottom wall 12 of shell 10. This boss 26 which, for example, may be approximately of an inch in thickness, surrounds the central aperture 13 in the bottom wall 12 and is provided with a plurality of radial notches 28 spaced equally from each other. In the embodiment shown, eight notches are provided spaced at 45 angles from each other The number of such notches 28 corresponds to the number of tablet fingers 18 on the delivery disk 16. Each of the radial ribs 22 within the dispensing knob 20 has a small upraised protuberance 29 thereon which upon rotation of the knob is received in a notch 28. It will be appreciated that the spacing of the notches 28 in the rib is such that all of the protuberances 29 are received in a notch 28. Thus, when the dispensing knob 20 is rotated the tablet delivery disk 16 also rotates and each notch 28 in turn receives a protuberance 29 and holds the delivery disk in such position that a tablet finger 18 closes the discharge opening 14 thereby preventing the discharge of tablets. Further rotation of the dispensing knob by means of a slight manual pressure forces the protuberances 29 out of the notches 28 permitting the dispensing knob 20 and tablet delivery disk 16 to turn freely until each protuberance falls into the succeeding notch. In the meantime, the tablet fingers 18 on disk 16 have carried a tablet into registry with discharge opening 14 through which it falls into the dispensing knob 20 and finally out through the opening 21 therein into the hand of the user. As the protuberances 29 fall into each successive notch 28 a clicking noise is heard thereby audibly signaling the tablet user that the knob has undergone sufficient rotation for delivery of one tablet.
The tablet dispenser of this invention is characterized by its simplicity of construction with a minimum number of parts, all of which can be molded from a variety of light plastic materials known to the art. The tablet dispenser can be positioned at a desired location such as on a wall by means of the tapered lug 30 on the shell which is adapted for slidable engagement with a complementary bracket.
Those modifications and equivalents which fall within the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claims are to be considered part of the invention.
