UM BRELLA-TO P.
3PECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,918, dated December 22, 1885.
Application filed July 30, 1855. Serial No. 173,066. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern: reception of the ribs. These apertures are Be it known that I, DEWITT O. MARKHAM,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of Oneida and State of 5 New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella-Tops; and
I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethe same.
My invention relates to the construction of umbrella-tops, and has particular relation to that class of umbrella-tops used in connection with vehicles.
It consists, in combination with a top and umbrella-staff, of a peculiar form of notch,det-achable ribs, and a peculiar form of seams in which said ribs are inserted, more fully as hereinafter described and claimed. It is illus- 2O trated in the accompanying drawings, in
which- Figure l is asectional side view in elevation of the improvement, and Figs. 2 to 8 detail views of separate parts.
In the drawings, A is an u mbrella-staff, constructed, preferably, of gaspipe. It is bent, substantially as shown, outwardly near the bottom and inwardly near the top, so as to afford perfect freedom of movement of the oco cupant of a seat to which it may be applied,
and at the same time to bring the center of the umbrella'directly over the drivers head. It is provided with holes I) and a'spring-key, O, to adapt it to be secured at any desired height to any suitable support.
I is a device (shown in detail in Fig. 3) to take the place of the usual form of notch in umbrellas for supporting the ribs. It consists of arim having holesj to receivethe umbrellao ribs, and an open hub, k, which slips over the upper end of the umbrella-staff, and is fastened thereto by means of a spring-key, Z. Steel ribs m are preferably employed of the form shown in Fig. 4. At the seams of the umbrella-top are formed apertures N for the It will be seen by my improvements that the entire apparatus can be easily and quickly attached to and detached from the seat or other support and taken apart. The top can be taken from the staff, the ribs removed, and the canvas folded up, and all the parts as quickly put together.
Having thus described my invention, what'63*"' I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an umbrella or canopy, the removable top consisting of the canvas, the notch I, provided with holes and open hub k, the removable ribs, the seams in which said ribs are inserted, and the thimbles for securing the ribs in the seams, in combination with the staff A, provided with holes and spring-keys, substantially as described.
2. The top having the seams formed with apertures N, provided with the ribs m, and the thimbles P, in combination with the notch I, having the holes j, whereby the ribs may be inserted in the seams and in the holes in the notch, and secured in place by the thimbles P without sewing or other fastening, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
R. W. RUssnLL, J. B. DALPHIN.
