UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID F. SPEES, OF VINGENNES,'INDIANA, ASSIGNOR TO THE SINGER MANUFACTURING COMPANY OF NEW JERSEY.
THREAD HOLDER AND CUTTER FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,759, dated December 22, 1885.
Application filed June 26, 1885.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID F. SPEEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vincennes, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread Holders and Outters for SewingMachines, of which the following is aspecification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective device adapted for ready attachment to the presser-bars of sewing-machines, and constructed to hold the threads and to sever the same when desired.
To this end myinvention consists of a single strip of spring metal bent to form a claspingloop of proper size to embrace the presserbar tightly, and having asecond loop the upper forward side of which is sharpened to form a cutting-edge. A return-bend forms a holding-arm, bearing against one side of the claspingloop, and having its rear end turned out wardly, or away from said loop, so that the threads may be readily drawn into the holding part of the device and across the cutting-edge.
In the drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a sewing-machine, showing my invention in operative position. Fig. 2 is a top view of my holder and cutter, showing the presser-bar in section; and Fig. 3 is a detail side view of my device.
A denotes the sewing-machine presser-bar; B, the needle-bar; O, a portion of the head or faceplate, and D a portion of the machine bed-plate.
My thread holder and cutter consists of a strip of spring-metal bent to form a claspingloop, (1, adapted to tightly embrace the presserbar A of the machine. Forward of the clasping-loop a is the cutting-loop b, the upper forward side of which is sharpened,to form a cutting-edge c. A return-bend of the metallic strip forms a holding-arm, d, which presses against the clasping-loop a, the side of the latter which is adjacent to said arm being somewhat flattened, as shown in Fig. 2, to in- Serial No.109,882. (No model.)
creasetheholding-surfaces. Theholding-arm is inclined outwardly away from the claspingloop, so that the threads may be readily drawn into the thread-holding part of the device.
To place the holder and cutter in operative position, the presser-foot maybe removed and the clasping-loop sprung on the presser-bar from below, and the device then moved up ward to the position shown in Fig. 1.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the drawings. \Vhen the threads are to be held or severed, they are drawn into the holder from the rear. The holding-arm produces sufficient friction on the threads, so that a sudden downward jerk on the latter, across the cutting-edge c,will readily sever them, leaving the parts thereof which are rearward of said edge retained between the holding-arm and the clasping-loop. The threads may, when desired, be released from the holder by a slight outward pressure of the finger of the operator against the holdingarm it.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A thread holder and cutter all in one piece, and consisting ofa clasping loop adapted to embrace the presser-bar, a cutting-loop in front of said clasping-loop and having a cutting-edge on its forward side, and a holdingarm bearing against said clasping-loop and having an outwardly-inclined rear end, sub stantially as set forth.
2. A thread holder and cutter all in one piece, and consisting of a clasping-loop, a, adapted to embrace the presser-bar, and having a flattened side, a cutting-loop, b, in front of said olasping loop and having a cuttingedge at its forward side, and a holding-arm, d, bearing against said flattened clasping-loop, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID F. SPEES.
