Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL P. POPE, OF BURLINGTON, NEIV YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES Fon TRIMMING I EATHEIR.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,264, dated September 10, 1861.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Bc it known that I, SAMUEL IP.V POPE, of
Burlington, in the county of Otsego and 'a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, making part ofthis specification, in which- A Figure l is a longitudinal section, and Fig. 2 an end elevation, of my improved machine.
Similar letters ot` reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
The subject of my invention is a machine for reducing harness-traces, belt-leather, and other similar objects to proper size and form; 'and the invention particularly consists `in a certain combination of parts hereinafter eX- plained, for the purpose stated.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A is the base of the machine.
B is a side plate secured perpendicularly thereto.
C C are horizontal bars or plates projecting from the plate B and supporting adjustably a second side plate B', which is secured in a position parallel with the plate B and at any :required distance therefrom by means of thumb-screws D D secured in the plate Bby means of springs and collars.
E is a wooden spring engaging at its rear end over the screw D and held down toward the horizontal plates C C by means of a pin or bolt e.
F F are knives inserted obliquely in the respective side plates with their edges presenting backward.
G G are chamfering-knives fixed obliquely, one in each side plate, and adjustable to any angle by means of set-screws g g.
The operation is-as follows: The leather is introduced atback beneath the spring E, its edges being received by suitable slots in the side plates. The plates are set at a distance apart corresponding with the desired width of the article to be produced, and the knives G set at such an angle as to impart the required chamfer of the edges. The leather being then drawn through the machine, the knives F trim it accurately to the required Width, and the knives G impart the requisite chamfer.
Having thus described my invention, what y I claim as new and desire to secure b Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the stationary side plate B, adjustable side plate B', horizontal plates O, horizontal set-screws D D', straightedged knives F and G, set obliquely` and spring E, all construct-ed, arranged, and operating in the Inanner and for the purposes set forth. i
SAMUEL P. POPE.
