WORM-FENCE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,416, dated December 15, 1885.

Be it known that I, DAVID A. MCHENEY, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Younger, in the county of Boone and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvcments in VorInFences, of which the following is a specication.

My invention relates to improvements in worm-fences; and it consists in certain novel features of construction,which are fully pointed out in the following specication and claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure lis a horizontal section in the plane x x, Fig. 2, of my improved fence. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the same.

In the drawings the letters a a, &c., designate the fence-posts, preferably ofa square or rectangular cross-section, which are securely driven or embedded in the ground in sets in a zigzag line, as in the ordinary worin-fence, and at a distance apart equal to the length of the panels. The posts forming each set are best placed a distance apart and corner to corner, and between these sets of posts are placed the rails b, with their ends overlapping each other in the ordinary manner.

In order to secure the rails in their respective positions,wires c c, &c., are used,which are placed in convenient positions encircling the posts.

For the purpose of making a stronger fence, I place at intervals in the line of fence, as at A, four posts, a, in a square, and the rails are secured thereto, as before, or else the entire fence can be constructed with four posts at each corner, all depending on the strength and rigidity required.

For the purpose of strengthening the fence, I employ riders d, which connect the panels at'or near their centers, and extend between posts a a', dto., driven in sets, as before, and the riders are secured in position between the posts by encircling wires c c. These riders may be used at intervals, or continuously along the line of fence.

The object of my invention is to produce a fence which can be more quickly and cheaply built than the ordinary rail fence, and which is more durable than the latter. Owing to the rapidity with which such a fence can be built and the small amount of labor required forits construction, its design is especially adapted for use in the building of temporary fences.

I am aware that a fence has been composed of posts arranged in pairs, with the rails arranged between the pairs, and conlined by wires encircling the posts. I am also aware that a worm-fence has been composed of rails and riders Wired to the upper rails. Such, therefore, I do not broadly claim.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

A worm-fence consisting of the main posts a, arranged in pairs in a zigzag line, the rails b, having their ends extending between said posts, the pairs of posts a arranged in a straight line between the ends of the rails, the riders d, spanning the space between the sets of rails, and having their ends extending between the said intermediate posts, and the wires binding the rails and main posts together and the intermediate posts and riders together, substantially as described.
