REFRIGERATOR-SAFE FOR BREAD, CAKE, 00.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,367, dated December 15, 1885.

Be it known that I, HENRY D. STREATOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Galesburg, county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Refrigerator- Safe for Bread, Cake, &c., of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object certain improvements, hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view with one corner broken away, showing the internal construction. Fig. 2 is a crosssection on a line with the end of the parts a a in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 isadetail of Fig. 2 enlarged.

Referring to the drawings and the letters marked thereon, B is a basin for holding water or ice, which supplies the water as it melts. O O is a central covering to the Water in the basin, having closed sides, perforated top, and open bottom, adapted to be set detaehably in the basin and in the water therein, leaving a space between it and the side walls of the basin B, into which is placed a case, A, having closed sides and top and open bottom, thus forming a chamber within the case and above the perforated top of the water covering 0, in which bread, cake, &c., are placed for keeping moist and cool. This chamber may be provided with any suitable shelves, a a. Around the upper sides of the water-cover G is a packing of rubber or other suitable material engaging the inner surface of the case A, to prevent the moisture from the water in the basin B rising into the foodchamber. The lower edges of the case A setting into the water in the basin prevents ants and other vermin from obtaining access to the food, and the cool air and moisture rising into the chamber through the perforations of the water-coverGpreserves the food in a cool, moist, and desirable condition. The perforations in the top of the water-cover O are closed, partially or entirely, by any suitable adjustable gate or gates. The device here shown for this purpose consists of a gate, U, hinged at the edge beneath the perforated top, Fig. 2. This gate is provided with a packing on its upper side or face of cork or other suitable material. Thus when the gate is raised to close the perforations no moisture can rise in the foodchamber; but as the gate will in most cases be used open to a greater or less degree the upper face may not be provided with packing, if preferred. A curved lock and liftingbar, r, is pivotally connected with the gate U, and is passed up through a slot in the top of the detachable water-cover 0. One edge of the bar 0' is provided with notches, to engage the side of the slot through which it passes to hold the gate open at the desired point and to lock it closed. The water in this preserver circulates over the entire bottom of the basin, as the case A and water-cover C are detachably set in the basin.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to-seeure, is

1. The combination of a water-basin, a central detachable water-cover in said basin, of a size to leave a space between it and the side wall of the basin, and having a perforated top and a gate to close said perforations and open them to control the degree of moisture passing through them, and the case detachably setting into the basin and over the central water-cover, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination of the basin, the watercover having the perforated top and packing around said cover, and the case setting over the cover and into the basin and engaging the packing of said water-cover, substantially as set forth.
