- This recess being disposed adjacent the center of the inner side of the block and extending inwardly for a portion of the blocks width, is adapted to receive a pivotable latching pawl 44.

- This lever arm extends in the direction of lever 36 and is provided adjacent its free end with a laterally extending pin member 47 having a rotatable roll member 48 assembled thereon.
- a coil spring 49 having one end attached to pin member 47 and the opposite end attached to lever 36 as at 50 (FIG. 4) serves as a means for maintaining roll member 48 in constant contact with the second arm 40 of the double armed lever 36.
- lever arm 46 downwardly pivots pawl shaft 45 in a clockwise direction thereby moving the latching pawl 44 to that position shown in FIG. 6 which permits the retraction of coil spring 29 and the withdrawal of the vertical plate 26 and the donning mecha nism attached thereto to an inactive position.
- a guiding channel 54 is provided on the upper portion of the latch-out block and serves as a guide for the latch-out bracket 53 to keep the plate 26 in general vertical alignment when in a projected position.
- FIG. 5 illustrates the means utilized to attach the latchout bracket 53 to be underside of the plate 26 and includes a mounting bracket generally indicated by numeral 55 having a horizontally disposed base portion 56 and an upwardly directed slotted portion 57 which attaches as shown in FIGS. 4 and S to the lower edge of plate 26 by means of cap screws 58.
- a pair of stepped channel plates 59 and 60 assemble in spaced relation to the underside of the base portion 56 and forms a guiding channel between said plates for assembly of the latch-out bracket 53.
- This latch-out bracket when projected with the vertical plate 26 moves to a predetermined position in channel 54 where it is caused to come into contact with a stop member 61.
- This stop memher is made of a Wear resistant material and assembles by means of cap screws 62 in a longitudinally extending channel 63 disposed adjacent that side of the latch-out block opposite that side of said block at which recess 43 is formed.
- the latch-out bracket 53 is adjustable within the channel formed by plates 59 and 60 and serves as a means whereby the donning mechanism which is supported on plate 26 may be adjusted to obtain the desired alignment with the spindles with which it cooperates during its intended function.
- This adjustment feature includes an adjustment screw 64 that is supported intermediate its ends by a depending support member 65 the upper portion of which attaches to the lower side of plate 26 by means of cap screws 66.
- Adjusting screw 64 is provided with lock nuts 67 and 68 which "are adapted to be tightened against the depending support member 65 to maintain the plate 26 in its required setting.
- lock nuts 67 and 68 are loosened and turning of the adjustment screw, one end of which is rotatably attached to the latch-out bracket 53, will cause the latter to slide in one direction or the other within the channel formed by plates 59 and 60. Retightening of the lock nuts will maintain the changed setting and when plate 26 is again projected, the latch-out bracket will still come into contact with the stop member 61, but the position of said plate and donning mechanism with respect to the spindles is affected by this adjustment means.
- That portion of the horizontally disposed and longitudinally extending shaft member 33 which protrudes from that end of the latch-out block 31 furthest from the donning mechanism utilizes a pillow block 69 as an additional means for supporting and guiding this portion of said shaft 33 (FIGS. 1, 2, and 3).
- the shaft extends a short distance beyond the confining limits of the pillow block 69 and is provided on this end with a lever arm '70.
- This lever arm is fixedly attached to the end of shaft 33 and, extending angularly upwardly, the opposite end thereof is pivotably attached to a vertically disposed release rod 71 as at 72.
- Release rod 71 is maintained in a vertical position by a guiding means generally indicated by numeral 73 disposed adjacent the upper end of said rod.
- This guiding means includes a bifurcated crank arm 74, the bifurcated portion of which supports a horizontally disposed bushing 75 (FIGS. 7 and 8) through which the upper portion of the release rod 71 is adapted to extend.
- the opposite end of crank arm 74 is fixedly attached to one end of a crank lever shaft 76, the major portion of which is supported 'by and journaled in a lever shaft housing 77.
- This lever shaft housing extends laterally from and is attached to the end face member 27 of the upwardly directed extension 23.
- Lever shaft 76 extends through the end face member and is provided on that end with a generally vertically disposed vertical plate crank lever 78 (partially shown in FIGS. 1 and 2).
- crank lever (not shown) is pivotally attached to the vertical plate 26 and when the latter is projected to operating position, the upper portion of said crank lever moves with said plate thereby pivoting the crank lever shaft 76 in a direction that causes the bifurcated portion of the crank arm 74 to pivot upwardly.
- That portion of the release rod 71 which extends above bushing 75 is threaded as at 79 having a hex nut 80 and washer 81 assembled thereon with a coil spring 82 disposed intermediate said washer and said bushing.
- crank arm 74 also pulls the release rod 71 in an upwardly direction and the latter being interconnected with the latching mechanism causes shaft member 33 to turn in a direction whereby the latching pawl 44 pivots to the required position for maintaining plate 26 in a projected position.
- the top of the release rod 71 is provided with a knob 83 and by simply pushing said knob and rod downwardly will cause shaft member 33 to move in the opposite direction and being interconnected with the latching pawl 44, the latter is caused to pivot to that position shown in FIG. 6 whereby the vertical plate 26 and donning mechanism are retracted to an inactive position.
- the means utilized to release the vertical plate 26 and the donning mechanism automatically includes an indicating lever generally indicated by numeral 84 having a bobbin package engaging sunface 85 and a cam engaging surface 86 integral with and extending from said surface 85 (FIGS. 1 and 2).
- This indicating lever is provided with a hub 87 which by means of an integrally formed web 88 forms the com plete indicating lever.
- the indicating lever is mounted for pivotable movement on a vertically disposed stud 89, the latter being fixedly attached to a lever support member 90.
- the support member is assembled by means of cap screws 91 to the lower side of the vertical plate 26 as at 92.
- a release rod cam 93 assembles on the release rod 71 and is secured thereto by means of screws 94.
- This cam includes a camming surface 95 inclined from the horizontal which is maintained in close proximity with the cam engaging surface 86 of the indicating lever (FIG. 1) when the vertical plate 26 is in a projected or donning operating position.
- the donning and dofiing machine when performing its intended function is moving along the rail of a spinning frame in the direction of the indicating arrow A depicted in FIGS. 1 and 2. While performing its intended function, the vertical plate 26 is in the projected position shown in FIG. 1. When moving along the rail in this position, the package engaging surface of the indicating lever will not contact the spindles from which the wound bobbins have been doifed; however, in the event of a dofiing miss said engaging surface will contact the yarn package of this particular bobbin and through continued movement of the machine the indicating lever 84 is caused to pivot in a clockwise direction as seen looking from the top thereof.
- Movement of the indicating lever in this manner forces the cam engaging surface 86 thereof across the camming surface of the release rod cam 93 pushing the same and the release rod 71 downwardly.
- the downward movement of the release rod actuates the latching mechanism to pivot the latching pawl downwardly to release the vertical plate 26 thereby permitting retraction of spring 29 and the withdrawal of said plate to an inactive position.
- FIGS. 9, l0, l1, and 12 which includes a latch-out block generally indicated by numeral 96 and like latch-out block 28 includes a horizontally disposed shaft member depicted by numeral 97.
- This block assembles in the same location on the supporting frame as block 28 and is provided with a centrally disposed recess 98 extending from that side of the block adjacent the donning mechanisms operating position inwardly for a portion of said blocks width.
- Shaft member 97 extends through recess 98 and is journaled in aligned apertures provided in that portion of the block which forms the sides of said recess.
- a latching pawl 99 assembles on shaft 97 within the confines of recess 98 and being fixedly attached to said shaft it is movable with it to hold the vertical plate 26 in a projected position or to release the same therefrom.
- This latching pawl is provided with a latching tooth 1011 which when in locking position is adapted to seat in a recess of conforming configuration provided in a latch-out bracket 161 (FIG. 12).
- the latch-out bracket is attached to the lower edge of the vertical plate 26 as is latch-out bracket 53 and is slidably adjustable in a like manner for adjusting said plate and donning mechanism with respect to the spindles with which said mechanism is adapted to cooperate.
- a coil spring 102 (FIG. 12) assembles beneath the latch pawl 99 with one end thereof seated in a recess 163 provided on the underside of said pawl with. the opposite end of said spring being seated in a similar aligned recess provided in the supporting frame.
- Spring 1112 is continually urging the pawl to a latching horizontal position as shown in FIG. 12 and when the latch-out bracket is in this position, it is caused to contact a stop member 1114 similar to and for a like purpose of the stop member 61 utilized on block 28.
- shaft 97 is actuated to release the plate 26 for withdrawal to an inactive position.
- This shaft extends outwardly from each end of the latch-out block 96 and like shaft 33 it supports adjacent one end a bifurcated lever member 194 which is adapted to support a roller 105 therebetween.
- Roller 105 is used for the same purpose as roller 38 to release the donning mechanism as the machine completes its intended function.
- This end of shaft 97 also supports a collar 106 and being fixedly attached thereto, it is provided with an upwardly directed lever pin 107 (FIG. 10) which is utilized for manual release of the latching pawl 99.
- the opposite end of shaft 97 has a lever arm 108 secured thereto that is directed in a generally upward direction as shown in FIGS. 9 and 10.
- the upper portion of this lever arm is of reduced thickness as at 109 and is adapted to be engaged at this portion of said arm by a pivotal indicating lever generally indicated by numeral 110.
- This indicating lever is in the form of a bell crank lever having a supporting hub portion 111, a first arm 112 in the form of a camming surface to be engaged by the yarn package of an undoffed bobbin and a second arm 113 the end of which is adapted to contact the upper portion of the lever arm 108.
- the indicating lever is attached for pivotable movement to the side of the vertical plate 26 as at 114 by means of a positioning spacer 115, bolt 116 with washers, and a retaining nut 117 and 118, respectively.
- the modification functions in a very similar manner to the spindle protection device first described.
- the machine when moving along the rail of a spinning frame is moving in the direction of the indicating arrows B in FIGS. 9 and 10 and the wound bobbins are first doffed from their respective spindles by the doffing mechanism and then empty bobbins are impaled on these spindles by means fully described in the aforementioned patent.
- the protection device according to the invention is disposed intermediate the dofling and donning units and functions to detect wound bobbins remaining on the spindles after passing the doifing mechanism.
- FIG. 9 shows the indicating lever in operating position.
- the first arm 112 is so disposed as not to contact the empty spindles as it moves past them; however, should there be a doffing miss and a wound bobbin remains on one of the spindles, the curved or camming surface of arm 112 will contact the yarn package of this Particular bobbin.
- the indicating lever will pivot in the direction of the indicating arrow C in FIG. 9 causing the second arm 113 thereof to pivot lever arm 108 in a clockwise direction.
- This motion actuates shaft 97 and the latch-out pawl 99 being fixedly attached thereto pivots downwardly to release the vertioal plate 26. Retraction of coil spring 29 then withdraws this plate and the donning mechanism attached thereto to a retracted and inactive position.
- a spindle protection device including a pivotable bobbin indicating lever adapted to be activated by the presence of an undoffed wound bobbin and a means functioning in conjunction with said pivotable indicating lever to release the donning mechanism with a further means cooperating with the latter to withdraw the same to an inactive position.
- a spindle protection device including a pivotable bobbin indicating lever adapted to be activated by the presence of an undoifed wound bobbin and a means functioning in conjunction with said pivotable indicating lever to release the donning mechanism, said means including interconnected cam and linkage members and spring members acting upon the donning mechanism for withdrawing the same to an inactive position when the latter is released by said cam and linkage members.
- a spindle protection device including a pivotable bobbin indicating lever, a latching means for maintaining the donning mechanism in operating position, said indicating lever being adapted to cooperate with said latching means to release said donning mechanism when said lever is encountered by an undoffed wound bobbin, said latching means including a shaft and latching pawl affixed thereto, a lever arm fixedly attached to one end of said shaft and adapted to cooperate with said indicating lever to actuate said latching pawl.
- said latching means includes a means affixed to said shaft for manual actuation of said latching pawl.
