Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 33,l90, (lated September 3, 18M.
. To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LUOIAN FAY, of Cincinnati, Hamilton county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Edgiug-Machine for Sheet Metal Roofing; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this speciiieation.
My invention relates to an automatic provision for bending or setting up the edges of sheet metal for roofing after the single sheets havebeen united into long si rips or courses,7 and preparatory to the iinal operation of uniting the several courses together, theinventiou being one of a series made by me for the more perfect and expeditious putting together of sheet-metal roo-fs.

A A A are several axles, of which each is in two separate pieces, which, by means of slots c and bolts c', can be adjusted to any width of metal. These axles are held to their proper relative positions by means of bars B, so as with said bars to constitute a frame or bed, which is supported by a double set of wheels or rollers, C C G, of slightlyconical peripheries, and styled the traveling7 rollers. The axles A A A project somewhat beyond the traveling rollers, in order to afford attachment by means of setscrews cl for a series of nearly perpendicular axles, D, of rollers E E E, of which the rollers E and E have respectively the forms of an obtusely and acutely conic frustum.
Secured to the front axle, A, by set-screws fare two notched jaws, F, which, being secured to their properposition out or in upon the axle, serve to guide the machine along the course or strip z, and act as gages for the formation of the respective high and low iianges, y and y, required for the subsequent and final operation of double-seaming.
The machine is both propelled and is held down firmly to its work by means of ahandle, G, attached to its rear portion.
Operation: rIhe two series of setting-up and traveling rollers and the gages being set at the required distance apart for the particular width of metal and for the required wide and narrow flanges, the edges of the tin,
z, must be introduced into the notches of the gages, and the machine being then pushed forward along the course or strip in the direction of the arrow, the work is done. O11 steep roofs the operator, being seated upon the machine, may allow it to descend by gravitation, and for additional safety the machine may be prevented from passing over the eaves by a rope attached to its rear portion.
Bractical tests upon the roof with this machine show that a single operator of comparatively slight skill and physical ability will set up both edges more perfectly and in less time than four skilled workmen can set up a single edge with the customary appliances. The machine, therefore, does the work of seven men, and with greater exactness and uniformity than have been heretofore possible.
As an auxiliary and intermediate tool loetween my cross and double seamin g machines, the present improvement is invaluable, the flanges being set up absolutely vertical and to a definite and uniform rectilineal line, height, and distance apart, such perfection being more essential for joints which are to be nished by my doubleseaming machine than for4 the common hand operation, in which irregularities in the setting up can be humored77 by elevating, depressing, 85o., the tool.
I claim as new and of my invention- 1. The double series of traveling and seb ting-up rollers O C C, E E E, O C O, E E E, for the simultaneous setting up of two opposite edges ot' a metallic plate, in the manner substantially as set forth.
2. The described combination of traveling and setting-up rollers C and E, C and E', &c., the axle D of the setting-up roller being secured and adjusted upon the axle A A',
