SEWING-MACHINE ATTACHMENT FOR UNWINDING THREAD FROM SPOOLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,855, dated December 8, 1885.
Application filed March 12, 1885. Serial No. 158,636. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that l, GEORGE WHITE, 2. citizen of the United States, and residing; in the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing Machine Attach ments for Unwinding Thread from Spools, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description and specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures marked thereon, the same forming part of this specification.
The invention relates to devices intended to unwind the thread from spools without the IS turning of the spool; and it consists of the improved devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved device havinga spool of thread in place; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal view, the cover being removed.

A is a cylindrical vessel, which I preferably 2 make of tin, in which to place the spool of thread. It is made large enough in diameter to accommodate the largest size of spool desired to be used. It has an interior vertical spindle, a, rising at its center and firmly secured to its base on which the spool is placed, the spindle being small enough to enter the bore of the spool with but little friction. I
prefer to split this spindle at the top, as shown.
The cylindrical vessel A has a cap or cover,
B, which fits tightly onto it, and which has an opening at its apex for the delivery of the thread, this opening being of any convenient size and shape, so that the thread will be delivered with as little friction as possible. I
0 prefer to make the rest of the cap B solid, so as to exclude dust, &c., from the spool; but it may have openings or be of a ribbed structure. It is only essential that when the cap is in place it should furnish a circumscribed thread- 45 delivery opening in the center over the spool, and when removed should furnish thereby an opening in the vessel A sufficiently large to conveniently introduce and remove the spool.
C is a circular shield or guard-piece, diskshaped, and of a diameter greater than the diameter of the head of the spools to be unwound, having a smooth rounded periphery and a central bore or opening adapted to be placed over the end of the spindle a, as shown, with preferably sufficient friction to reliably hold the shield in place, the spool being also thereby held in place. The shield 0 may, however, be held in place by the spool, as by a shank entering tightly the bore of the spool.
I prefer to make the spindle a, secured to the base of the vessel A, hollow, not only to make the parts light, but also by, in the same connection, puncturing the base of the vessel A itself in the center of the base to furnish a continuous opening through the center or axis 6 5 of the device at its lower part, whereby the whole device may be mounted on any convenient spindle or similar part, as of a sewingmachine, and so be held in place. I prefer also to surround the body of the cylindrical 7o vessel A with a ring or endless band of cushioning material, D, for use as a pin'cushion, providing the vessel A with an exterior base flange or rim, 1), for the support of the same.
Nhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by 7 5 Letters Patent, is-
1. As a new article of manufacture, the cylindrical spool-holder A, having spool-holding spindle a, threaddelivery cap B, and guard or shield G, substantially as set forth and de scribed.
2. As a new article of manufacture, the cylindrical spool-holder A, having centrallypunctured base and hollow split spindle a, solid cap B,with central thread-delivery open- 8 5 ing, and guard or shield O, substantially as set forth and described.
3. As a new article of manufacture, the cylindrical spool-holder A, having spindle a, cap B, guard or shield G, base-rim b, and cusho ion-band D, substantially as set forth and described.
