This invention relates to a holder for a flatiron and particularly to such a holder as is adapted to be mounted on a wall.
It is an object of the invention to provide such a holder which will be fireproof and thus be adapted to receive the flatiron when the latter is hot and without waiting, after use of the flatiron, for the latter to cool off.
Another object is to provide such a holder which will have an opening into which the bottom plate of a flatiron may readily fit to trap said flatiron and support the latter, and a door closing said opening automatically whenever said flatiron is removed therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to provide such a flatiron holder which comprises a sheet metal shell which may be drawn from a single sheet metal blank.
The manner of accomplishing the foregoing objects as well as further objects and advantages will be manifest in the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a perferred embodiment of the invention mounted on a Wall and holding a flatiron which has been inserted therein.
FIG. 2 is a plan view of the invention, on a slightly larger scale than FIG. 1, as the invention appears when it is not holding a flatiron.
FIG. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of FIG. 2.
FIG. 4 is a view similar to FIG. 3 illustrating the door of the holder yielding to pressure from a flatiron as the latter is being inserted into said holder.
FIG. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 5--5 of FIG. 4.
FIG. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view similar to FIG. 4 and illustrates said holder with said flatiron completely inserted into supported relation with said holder.
FIG. 7 is a cross-sectional view similar to FIG. 5 taken on the line 7-7 of FIG. 6.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the invention is there illustrated as embodied in a flatiron holder 10 which comprises a sheet metal box 11 having a base plate 12 which is rectangular and provided with flanges 13 bent outwardly at a right angle from the edges thereof. These flanges have tapped holes for receiving screws 14 for a purpose which will be made clear hereinafter. The base plate 12 also is provided with suitable holes for receiving screws 15 for securing said base plate to a wall 16. The box 11 also includes a rectangular shell 17 which is preferably drawn from a single sheet metal blank to include a front wall 18, top and bottom walls 19 and 20, and side walls 21. The shell 17 fits snugly over the flanges 13 of the base plate 12 and is provided with suitable holes through which screws 14 may be extended so as to be received in the tapped holes provided in flanges 13 for securing the shell 17 onto said base plate. A rectangular sheet of asbestos or other suitable heat insulating material fits snugly within the flanges 13 and is held in place in this position by the screws 14 extending inwardly over the edges of said sheet.
The side walls 21 are provided with perforations 26 for allowing a free passage of air into and from the box 11.
The front wall 18 of the box 11 has outstruck therefrom a door 27 so as to form a recess 28 with the edge portions 29 thereof rolled inwardly to give this recess a ice shape which will just snugly receive the body 30 of a flatiron 31 Which the holder 10 is provided to support. The flatiron 31 is shown conventionally in the drawings and may be any type of iron, although the holder 10 will be manufactured in sizes each of which will be adapted for holding some particular size group of popular fiatirons already on the market.
The fiatirons with which the holder 10 is intended to be used, are conventionally pointed at the front end so that their side walls converge forwardly. When viewed from the front as when looking at a cross-section of the flatiron shown in FIG. 5 or 7, the side walls of the iron are seen to diverge downwardly. The flatiron 31 is also provided with the conventional bottom plate 32 which extends slightly outwardly beyond the body 30 of the flatiron.
The door 27 is provided with longitudinal ribs 33 for holding the bottom plate 32 of the flatiron out of direct face-to-face contact with said door. The door 27 has a natural tendency to spring shut so as to substantially close recess 28 when the holder 10 is not in use, but the invention may include the use of a spring 34 which is rivetted to the bottom wall 20 and constantly engages the door 27 so as to bias this into closed position.
OPERATION The flatiron holder 10 may be installed on any wall, door or other vertical element of a building structure and is adapted for receiving a flatiron 31 when the same is heated, so that it will be unnecessary when concluding the use of said iron in an ironing operation, to allow the iron to cool before storing the same. In otherwords the holder 10 is designed so as to be ornamental and to neatly hold the flatiron 31 in a position high enough to be out of the reach of children and to provide a fireproof of storage for a hot iron which will permit the iron to cool after it is placed in storage without any further attention being paid to it. When the time comes again to use the iron it may be readily removed from the holder 10 and placed in use.
The manner in which the flatiron 31 is inserted into the holder 10 is clearly shown in FIG. 4, the final position of the flatiron in the holder being shown in FIG. 6. In the latter position the bottom plate 32 of the flatiron is snugly inserted within the rolled edge portions 29 of the recess 28 so that the iron is securely lodged by gravity in supported relation with the holder 10.
While only a single embodiment of the invention is disclosed herein, it is to be understood that various changes and modifications may be made in this without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A wall mounted holder adapted to hold a flatiron the side walls of which flatiron converge forwardly in horizontal plan and diverge downwardly in transverse section, said holder comprising a sheet metal box having a front wall, side walls and top and bottom walls; and means embodied in said front Wall and including a recess formed in said wall said recess having downwardly converging side edges and into which said flatiron fits when pointed downwardly so as to lodge said flatiron in said recess by gravity until lifted therefrom.
2. A flatiron holder as recited in claim 1 wherein a door is provided on said front wall to substantially close said recess when a flatiron is removed from said holder.
3. A flatiron holder as recited in claim 2 wherein said door constitutes a tongue of sheet metal outstruck from said wall in the formation of said recess.
4. A flatiron holder as recited in claim: 3 wherein edges of said recess which bear against said flatiron when the latter is lodged in place on said front wall, are rolled and polished to prevent said recess edges from marring the finish on the exterior of said flatiron.
5. A flatiron holder as recited in claim 4 wherein certain of the side, top and bottom walls of the holder box are provided with ventilating openings to accomplish a circulation of air through said box induced by the heat of a fiatiron lodged in said recess.
6. A flatiron holder as recited in claim 3 wherein said door is provided with ribs die stamped therein to hold the bottom of the flatiron from coming flat against said door thus retarding the rate of dissipation of heat from said flatiron through said door, and decreasing the temperature produced in said holder by the lodging of a hot flatiron therein.
7. A flatiron holder as recited in claim 3 wherein spring means is provided within said box and bearing against said tongue to bias the same outwardly into recess closing position.
8. A flatiron holder as recited in claim 3 which is provided with a rectangular mounting plate adapted to be secured to said wall and having edge flanges fitting within the open back of said box; means for securing said box to said flanges after said plate has been mounted on said wall; and a sheet of heat insulation material covering said mounting plate to shield the same from heat radiation from a fiatiron lodged in said holder.

Claims (1)

1. A WALL MOUNTED HOLDER ADAPTED TO HOLD A FLATIRON THE SIDE WALLS OF WHICH FLATIRON CONVERGE FORWARDLY IN HORIZONTAL PLAN AND DIVERGE DOWNWARDLY IN TRANSVERSE SECTION, SAID HOLDER COMPRISING A SHEET METAL BOX HAVING A FRONT WALL, SIDE WALLS AND TOP AND BOTTOM WALLS; AND MEANS EMBODIED IN SAID FRON WALL AND INCLUDING A RECESS FORMED IN SAID WALL SAID RECESS HAVING DOWNWARDLY CONVERGING SIDE EDGES AND INTO WHICH SAID FLATIRON FITS WHEN POINTED DOWNWARDLY SO AS TO LODGE SAID FLATIRON IN SAID RECESS BY GRAVITY UNTIL LIFTED THEREFROM.
