Be it known that I, EDWIN D. SMITH, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck-Wear,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in neck-wear made of paper, paper covered with fabric, or of fabric.

The invention consists in an article of neckwear formed of a backing on which a series of layers of paper, fabric, &c., are held.

The invention also consists in the construc tion and combination of parts and details, as Will be fully set forth hereinafter.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming'part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure l is a front view of my improved neck-wear, parts of the layers being folded over. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view on the line as m, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view on the line y y, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view of the combined paper and fabric.

The neck-wear-such as a scarf, bow, &c. is formed of a pasteboard backing, A, of the desired shape, and a series of layers, B, of paper, fabric, (or fabric glued on paper,) are placed upon and secured on the backing, and all is embossed to have the front shaped like a scarf, how, 850. A neckband, O, is secured to the neck-wear; or any other suitable fastening device may be provided. The layers B may all be of the same color or different colors, and they may all be made of the same material or different material. For example, the upper layers may be made of paper and the lower 1 for fastening the neckband O, and at the opposite edge it is provided with a prong, F, for holding the other end of the neckband. Diagonally opposite the prong F a pointed prong, G, projects from the edge ofthe shield. The prongs F and G are forced through the overlapping parts on the back of the shield or passed through apertures in the said overlapping parts. The said prongs thus also hold the front and'back parts of the scarf together. The band C is slipped under the prong F, and the prong G is passed into the band to hold the free end of the same on the back of the scarf. The band C is thus held detachably on the scarf, and can be removed to be used on another scarf. The fabric in is secured on the paper at either by glue, rubber, cement, or other adhesive material.

The back parts of the layers of paper and the shield may be provided near the top with a depression, S, for receiving the top of the collar-button, so as to cause the neclr'wear t0 fit better.

Cuffs can be made in the same manner as the neck-wear that is, in a series of layers,which can be torn off successively.

Having fully described my invention,whatI .claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. As a new article of manufacture, an article of neck-wearsuch as a scarf, bow, 8m.- formed of a series of layers of paper, fabric, or fabric on paper, one layer being placed loosely and detachably on the other to permit of tearing off the several layers successively, beginning at the top, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. In an article of neck-wear, such as a bow, scarf, &c., the combination, with a backing, of a series of layers of paper, fabric, or fabric secured on paper, which several layers are held on the backing, one layer covering the other, the several layers being united loosely and detachably, so as to permit of tearing off the several layers successively, beginning at the uppermost end, substantially as herein shown and described.

3. In an article of neckwear, such asabow,

on the same, all being embossed the same as an ordinary scarf, bow, 850., substantially as herein shown and described.

4. In an article of neck-wear, such as a scarf, bow, &c., the combination, with a series of layers of paper, fabric, &c., of a shield placed on the back of the. innermost layer or on the backing, the layers being folded over the back of the shield, substantially as herein shown and described.

5. In an article of neck-wear, such as a scarf, bow, &c., the combination, with a series of layers of paper or fabric, of a shield provided with one or more prongs, the layers being folded over the back of the shield, and

the prongs passed through the oyerlapping parts of the layers, substantially as herein shown and described.

6. In an article of neck -wear, such as a scarf, bow, &e., the combination, with a series of layers of paper, fabric. &c., of the shield E, having the prongs F, G, and H, and of the band 0, held by the prong H, the prongs F and G being passed through parts of the layers folded over the shield, substantially as herein shown and described.
