SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,400, dated December 1, 1885.

To @ZZ whom t may concern: Be it known that I, WARREN D. HUsE, of Laconia, in the county of Belknap and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knitting-Machines, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
My invention relates to circular-knitting machines of the class in which latch-needlesare used, and is an improvement upon the machine described in another application of mine, filed July 2l, 1884, No.138,349; and it Consists in a novel construction ofthe cast-off operating-cam and certain combinations of parts in connection therewith, which will be readily understood by reference to the description of the drawings and to the claims to be hereinafter given.
Figure l of the drawings is a plan of a machine embodying my invention with the castoff operatingcam removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectionon linexx on Fig. 1,with said cam in position. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan of a portion of the camplate for operating the castoff fingers, showing the cam-path as provided with two outward and inward throws; and Fig. l is a vertical section through the upper portion of one side of the needle-cylinder with the needles removed, and showing the stationary sinker in elevation.
A is the base-ring of the machine, arranged to be supported upon a bench or table, (not shown,) and having firmly secured thereto the needle-cylinder B, provided at its upper end with a series of fixed sinkers, c, forming up ward extensions of the partitions between the needle-grooves, said cylinder being constructed precisely as described in said application above cited, and carrying a circular series of latch-needles, C.
D is the needle-operating Camcylinder, E the driving-gear, and F the driving-shaft.
G is the annular recessed plate, secured by a driving-t to the periphery of the cylinder B, and carrying the plate H and segments I and I', and having set therein the studs O', upon which is supported the annular plate O, provided with radiating grooves in its upper face to receive and form bearingsffor the castoff iingers o, all constructed and operated substantially as described in said other application, and need not be further described here. l? is an annular cam-plate for operating the cast-offiingers 0, and differs from the samepart described in said other application, in that the cam-path p is provided with two outward and inward throws, p and p2, instead of one, asin said other application, by virtue of which arrangement I am enabled to connect the camplate P to the cam-cylinder D, so that the two shall at all times revolve in unison, which is done by means of the U-shaped arm or lever Q, which is iirmly secured to the cam-cylinder D by screws o', and its upper arm is secured directly to the Camplate P by means of the screw r, thus dispensing with the segment and adjustable stops used in the machine described in said other application in order to make the cast-off operating-cam, which in that case had but one outward and inward throw, time with the needle-cam when knitting back and forth for forming a heel or toe.
' It is necessary that the yarn-guide should move in advance of the cam-throws for operating the cast-offs, or rather that the inward movement ofthe cast-off fingers should succeed the forward movement of the yarn-guide, to accomplish which, and at the same time move the cast-off-operating cam-ring in unison at all times with the needle-operating cam-cylinder, I provide the path p with the two outward and inward throws p and p2, and secure the upper branch of the U-shaped arm Q firmly to the cam-ring P, so that the yarn-guide S, which is secured to said arm, shall be central between said two throws of the cast-off cam-path, and coinciding with the extreme upward throw of the needle-operating cylinder,so that in whichever direction said cams are moved the yarn will be delivered to the needles when in their highest position, and such delivery of the yarn shall precede an inward movement of the castoffs.
Whether the arm Q is moved continuously in one direction or vibrated to and fro through a portion of a revolution, that throw of the path p which follows the delivery of the yarn to the needles performs the work of casting off the loops of yarn, while the throw of said path which leads the delivery of the yarn, while it moves the cast-off ngers outward and inward,

performs no useful result, and if the machine were not required to knit' anything but a straight tube said second throw would be superuous.
5 S is the yarn-guide,constructed and attached tothe upper arm of the lever Q, in the same manner as in said other application.
By this arrangement a saving is made in the first cost of the machine, and an improvement is made in the operation, in that the shock occasioned by the contact of the arm of the lever Q with the stops onthe cast-off cam is avoided.
What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
l. In combination with a needle-cylinder having a series of fixed sinkers, a series of vertically moving needles, a needle operating cam-cylinder, the annular plate O, a series of horizontally-movable cast-off ngers, the annular cam-plate l?, provided with the path p, having two outward and inward th rows, p and p2, the cam-cylinder D, the U-shapcd arm Q,
rigidly connected at one end to the cylinder D and at the other end to the cam-ring P, and the yarn-guide S, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a needle-cylinder having a series of fixed sinkers, a series of vertically-movable needles, and a series of horizontally-movable cast-off fingers, the cam-cylinder D, the annular plate O, the annular camplate l?, provided with the path 19, having outward and inward throws p and p2, and the U- shaped lever Q, rigidly connected at one end to the cam-ring D and at the other end Vto the cam-plate P, substantially as described.
