A. ENGLISH.
TRANSOM LIFTER.
Patented Dec. 1, 1885.
74 232 55 gas I Jzzazwey UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE,
ARTHUR ENGLISH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
TRANSOM-LIFTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,289, dated December 1, 1885.
Application filed March 28, 1885. Serial No. 160,472. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR ENGLISH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohieago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvement-s in Transom-Lifters, of which the following is a specification, to wit:
This invention relates to an improvement in transom-lifters and it consists in certain peculiarities of the construction and arrangement of the same, substantially as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which myinvention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figures 1 and 2 represent myinvention applied to transoms opening both up and down, and Figs. 3 and 4 are details of parts of the same.
A represents a transom of the usual Orm, hinged to its frame at either the top or bottom, as found most desirable, and provided with a small arm, a, secured to it, as represented.
13 is the main rod of the lifter, secured to the door-frame by guide-lugs b b. To the upper end of this rod is secured by a screw-thread, b. a lug, bflwhich is, by a hinged rod or link, B, connected to the arm a on the transom. The lower end of the lifter-rod is provided with a handle, 0, which is screwed upon it against a shoulder, c, on the rod, which prevents it from slipping up too far on the rod. The action will be atonce seen. The lifterrod is lifted or lowered at will to open or close the transom, and secured at any desired point. In Fig. l the rod is secured by a set-screw; but I prefer to use the device seen in Figs. 2 and 3, where thelifter-rod is formed onits rear side with a series of notches, d, with which engages a spring-pawl, D, pivoted upon the side of the door-frame. transom in any position, and is quickly and simply engaged and disengaged at will.
The device is readily attached to any transom, skylight, or similar device, and as the lug b at the top of the lifting-rod is screwed on, it
may be turned at any desired angle with the rod to suit the position in which it is to be placed. This is an important feature,as much annoyance has been felt bya rigid connection at this point, which greatly limits the use of the device. This device obtains great leverage and opens the transom to its full extent.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The lifting-rod B, screw-threaded at its upper end and provided with the lug b", the hinged connecting-rod B, the guide-lugs b, and handle 0, in com bination with the springpawl D,engaging a series of notches, d, in the rod, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR ENGLISH.
