JAMES PLEUKHARP, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO JAMES PLEUKHARP & CO., OF SAME PLACE.
TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 331,212, dated November 24, 1885.
Application filed August 4, 1885. Serial No. 173,550.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, JAMES PLEUKHARP, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in knockdown tables; and it consists in, first, the combination of the stand or base and frame for the table having a number of legs or uprights, which are slotted or recessed at their upper ends, with the frame secured to the top of thetable, and which is provided with clamping-bolts, for the purpose of clamping the legs to the frame; second, a base or stand for a solid or extension table, consisting of a central post or pillar which supports the center of the top of the table, with legs which are arranged around the central pillar, and suitable feet or supports, the entire support or stand for the table being divided into twoparts for convenience of transportation, as will be more fully described hereinafter.
The object of my invention is to provide a table in which the top is made readily detachable from the base or stand, and the base or stand divided into two parts for convenience of transportation.
Figure 1 represents a perspective of the base or stand, the two parts being slightly separated. Fig. 2 is an inverted view of the top of the table. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the table complete. Fig. 4 is an inverted view of the top of the table, showing it adapted to be used as an extension-table.
A represents the four feet, which extend outward from the center, as shown. The inner ends of all four of these feet are rigidly secured to the sides of the central post, B, and secured in position in any suitable manner. The central post, B, to which the feet are secured, is formed of two pieces, one of which is provided with tenons and the other with recesses, for the purpose of keeping the parts (Model.)
in line with each other. This post B is divided diagonally through two of its corners, as shown, so that the four sides will be left in tact, so that the feet can be readily secured in position. Upon the top of each one of the feet A is secured a leg, 0, each one of which has a shoulder, D, formed upon its upper end, and has an open-ended slot, F, in its extreme upper end. Secured to the underside of the top G of the table is the frame H. In each corner of this frame is secured a block or corner-piece, I, which has its ends recessed in the sockets made to receive them in the inner side of the frame H. The sockets and the ends of the corner-pieces may either be of the shape here shown or any other that may be preferred. Passing through these corner-pieces are screwrods J, which are provided with washers and clamping-nuts N, and are concealed by ornamented blocks or tablets Q. The upper ends of the posts or legs 0 are inserted in the sockets O in the corner-pieces, and the clampingbolts or screw-rods then pass through the open-ended slots, so that the nuts and washers bear against the inner sides of the upper ends of the posts or legs 0. The lower edge of the frame H rests directly upon the top of the shoulder. When the nuts are tightened in position, the upper ends of the posts or legs C are clamped rigidly between the nuts and the corner-pieces of the frame. \Vhen it is desired to remove the cover, the nuts are loosened, and then the top can be raised upward, carrying the bolts with it and leaving the stand or support ready to be taken apart to be packed for transportation. On the under side of the top of the table is made a socket, P, in which the upper end of the central post or pillar, B, fits.
When an extension-table is to be formed, as shown in Fig. 4c, the top is divided at the lines at, Figs. 2 and 4., and then slides are ap plied at opposite sides of the central post, B, and supported in position upon the top of the cross-board T. Each part of the center post, B, is then connected to its respective half of the frame H by the board V, which supports the upper end of the post B in position. When the top is opened out or extended, the support T remains stationary, while the parts of the top G, frame H, and center post, B, separate.
Having thus described my invention, I
claim 1. A base or stand for the top of a table, consisting of the feet A, the central post, B, made in two parts, and the posts 0, placed upon the feet, in combination with the top and frame H, secured thereto, substantially as shown.
2. The combination of the feet, the central post, which is divided at its center, and the legs 0, which are placed upon the feet, with the top of the table, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the feet, the central post, B, and the legs 0, having their upper ends provided with slots or recesses, with the I frame H, provided with clamping devices,
substantially as set forth.
4. The combination of the top of the table and frame H, secured thereto of the cornerpieces of the frame and the clamping bolts and nuts, with the legs 0, provided with slots or recesses in their upper ends, substantially as shown and described.
5. The combination of the central post, B, divided at its center, the feetB, and legs 0,
provided with shoulders and recesses, with the top of the table, the frame which is secured thereto, and the clamping-bolts,whieh are secured to the frame, and by means of which the frame is clamped to the upper ends of the legs 0, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JAMES PLEUKHARP.
