Description
W. G. HALE.
WINDOW BLIND. No. 331,130. Patented Nov. 24, 1885.
UNITED STATES PATENT Critica.
WILLIS G. HALE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
WINDOW-BLIND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.331,130, dated November 24, 1885 Application filed October 2, 1885.
sylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window-Blinds, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l represents a partial front elevation and partial Vertical section of a windowblind embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represeuts a partial Vertical section and partial side elevation thereof. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section in line .fr x, Fig. l. Fig. 4 represents a View of a detached part. Fig. 5 represents a horizontal section of a modification ot' the parts at the sectional line g/ y, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a novel means for operating the slats of a window-blind, and further, of novel means for holding and locking the same, as will be hereinaftenfully set forth. Y
Referring to the drawings, A represents the frame of a window-blind, and B represents the pivoted slats thereof. One of the stiles is formed with a recess, C, which extends in the vertical direction thereof, and the adjacent journals B' of the slats are lengthened, so as to enter the recess, it being noticed that said journals are mounted on the inner strip or wall, C', left by said recess. To the ends of the journals at the recess C are attached toes D, which freely enter openings or slots in a vertically-moving bar, E, the latter being located in the recess U, each toe being formed with or secured to a boss, D', whose opening is squared or angular, to embrace the ends of the journals B', which are shaped similarly to said openings, whereby the toes are connected with the journals without the necessity of screws, nails, tc. The lower end of the bar E is bent outwardly, forming a lip, F, which constitutes a handle accessible at the front of the blind, and projecting through a faceplate, G, which is secured to the blind, a slot, G', being formed in the faceplate, to permit the rising and falling motions of the handle. To the inner face of the face- (No model.)
)plate is secured a spring or spring-strip, H, l with whose lower end is connected a serrated block, J, which is so located that it engages with the handle F of the bar E, said block being attachedt'o a head or button, K, the latter appearing at the front of the faceplate G, and havingV .its neck passing through a slot, K', in said plate, whereby lateral motions lnay be imparted to the button. It will be seen that the bar E may be raised and lowered, by which provision the slats may be readily turned so as to be opened and closed, or set in partially open or closed condition, said bar being operated by the lip or handle F. The button is first moved from the lip, thus unlocking the saine, after which a finger is applied to said lip, and the bar then raised or lowered by the same to the desired extent, after which the button is let go, and the block J springs into engaging contact with the lip and locking the same, whereby the bar E is also locked and the slats retained in their adjusted or set positions.
In Fig. 5 there is shown a serrated block, F', which is attached to the handle F, and engages with the serrated block J, forming an enlarged lockingsurface for locking the bar E.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. A slat having the end of its journal of angular form, and a toe secured thereto by means of a boss which is connected with the toe and has an angular opening, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The slat B and the journal thereof having an angular end portion, in combination with the boss D', having the toe D, slotted bar E with bent lip F, slotted face-plate G, spring H, serrated block J, and button K, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
8. rIhe slat B With toe D, in combination with the bar E, having a lip, F, forming a handle and locking-piece, the serrated block J with button K, and spring H, 'substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIS G. HALE.
