Description

V. J. LUCCARELLI March 7, I967 INSECT PROOF CANOPY FOR PICNIC TABLES Filed. March so, 1965 INVENTOR VINCENT LUCCARELLI a BY AGENT United States Patent 3,307,565 INSECT PROOF CANOPY FOR PICNIC TABLES Vincent J. Luccarelli, 916 Potomac Ave., Alexandria, Va. 22307 Filed Mar. 30, 1965, Ser. No. 443,863 2 Claims. (Cl. 135-5) This invention relates to an insect proof canopy for picnic tables, and more particularly to a portable knockdown and collapsible canopy having a cover of open mesh fabric of the type commonly referred to as mosquito netting.
An object of this invention is the provision of a knockdown and collapsible canopy which is easily assembled upon a picnic table or removed therefrom.
Another object of this invention is the provision of a canopy of the type described which in disassembled and collapsed position may be easily transported in the trunk of an automobile.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a canopy having a fabric cover attached to supporting members for easy collapsing to a folded position for transport.
These and other objects will become apparent upon consideration of the following specification taken with the accompanying drawings which together form a compete disclosure of my invention.
In the drawings:
FIG. 1 is an axonometric view of my invention in use, with part of the cover broken away;
FIG. 2 is an end view;
FIG. 3 is a side view of the partly disassembled, collapsed canopy; and
FIG. 4 is a fragmentary exploded view, with parts in section, showing the construction of the frame members.
The canopy comprises a pair of base members 11, 12 each adapted to be attached to the planar surface 13 of a table 14. The members 11, 12 are identical, and only one is shown in FIG. 4. They may be channel shaped as shown in FIG. 4 and are provided with a known type of clamping screw 15. The base members 11, 12 have each a plurality of sockets 16 spaced along the length thereof. Uprights 17, of suitable lengths are provided with their lower ends insertable in the sockets 16, arches or bows 18 are provided each having a nipple 19, at each end, insertable in the upper end of an upright 17.
A cover 20 of mosquito netting is provided, and said cover is preferably firmly attached to the bows 18. In the example shown, there are four sockets in each base member 11, 12, four uprights 17 for each side, and four bows 18. It is to be understood that more or less of each may be used, according to need. In assembled position as shown in F168. 1 and 2, the cover 20 has sides 21 which extend to the ground or floor, and ends 22, of the same length as the sides 21. Each end 22 is provided with an entrance flap 23 of generally known construction.
From the above description it can easily be seen that I have provided a simple easily assembled and disassembled knockdown and collapsible which enables picnickers to enjoy an outing without being tormented by insects.
I desire it to be understood that, various changes and modifications may be made within the skill of the art and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. An insect proof cover for a picnic table comprising a pair of elongated channel members having sides and bottoms with their open sides facing one another and adapted to embrace the opposite edges of a table, spaced clamping means on one side of each of said channels and adapted to engage the lower face of a table edge, spaced socket members on the opposite side of said channels, posts removably mounted in said spaced socket members, arcuate ribs removably mounted on posts at one side and extending across the table to the posts at the other side, a flexible fabric net attached to said ribs and adapted when said ribs are removed to be collapsed into a small package.
2. The structure in claim 1, wherein the net has side and end walls and roof, and including an entrance opening in at least one end wall.
