Description

P. HOLZ;
TARGET TRAP.
(No Model.)
No. 330,704. Patented Nov. 17,1885.
WiTnEEsEs:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRED HOLZ, OF ANDERSONS FERRY, ASSIGNOR TO THE LIGOWSKY CLAY PIGEON COMPANY, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.-
TARGET-TR AP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330,704, dated November 17, 1885.
Application filed April 1, 1885. Serial No. 160,877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRED How, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anderson s Ferry, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Target-Traps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to that class of targettraps having a jointed throwing arm or lever in which the outer arm or section carrying a holder or retaining device for the target receives a second motion upon the primary throwing-arm at the end of the sweep of the latter, so as to deliver the pigeon with a sort of wrist movement.
The flying-targets now upon the market vary in shape and size, and the object of my invention is to provide an improved holder adapted to receive and deliversuch targets.
My improvement is more especially applicable to that class of target holders from which the target is delivered at the end of the wrist movement by the momentum which it has acquired; and it consists in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a secondary arm embodying my invention, with a target or clay pigeon grasped in the holder-jaws, and of so much of the primary arm jointed thereto as is necessary to the understanding of its operation. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the parts shown in the foregoing figure.
A is the primary throwing arm or lever, provided at its outer end with a pivot-bolt, a, for the attachment of the secondary arm, which bolt is held elastically in its seat by means of a coiled spring, a, the tension of which may be adjusted by a nut, to, upon its lower screw-threaded end.
The secondary arm or holderB is composed of two flaring jaws,b b, hinged-gtogether, preferably,by the same bolt which connects them to the primary throwing-arm, and having at the rear of the pivot reversely-flaring heelpieces I) b, the ends of which are adapted to serve as seats for a coiled expansion-spring, O, tending constantly to force them apart and thereby close the jaws. At the ends of each of the jaws b, and also near their point of junction, are spools D, which serve as ears or (No model.)
lugs to hold the target in place. These spools are preferably made flaring from the center or near the center of their length toward each end, and may be of wood, rubber, or other suitable material. They are attached to the holder-jaws b by screw-bolts d, or such other means as will permit of their ready adjustment to present a different face to the target when one portion of the surface becomes worn by use, and also allow the spools to be removed and their places filled by others when the entire surface is worn.
When a target is to be thrown, it is placed in the secondary arm or holder and the latter forced back to an angle with the throwingarm, which is then set in the notch and the trigger pulled. In the ensuing sweep the secondary arm receives its independent motion, which carries it round beyond alignment with the primary arm and into nearly a line with the line of flight, when the target escapes by its own momentum, receiving as it leaves the holder the usual whirling movement from the front jaw of the latter.
I claim as myinvention- 1. In combination with the holder-jaws of a target-holder, rotatable spools attached to said holder-jaws.
2. In combination with the holder-jaws of a target-holder, spools flaring toward each end and mounted upon said jaws, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. In combination with the holder-jaws of a target -trap, spools flaring toward each end and adjustably attached to said holder-jaws, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4. The combination, with the holder-jaws of a targettrap, of spools attached to said holder-jaws by means of axial screws, whereby they may be clamped and adjusted.
5. The combination, with the throwing-arm of a target-trap, of the target-holder B, consisting of the holder-jaws I), having reverselyflaring heel-pieces b,springa upon the pivotbolt, and spring 0, acting to close the jaws, and the spools D, adjustably attached to said holder-jaws, said holder-arm being pivotally attached to the throwing-arm.
FRED HOLZ.
