APPARATUS FOR SHAPING AND FINISHING CANDLES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 330.200, dated November 10, 1885.

Be it known that I, ANTON F. BAUMER, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga, in the State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Shaping and Finishing Candles, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and exact description.

The purpose of this invention is to apply the final shape and finish to the exterior, and more particularlyto the ends, of candles molded or otherwise formed approximately to shape, and to accomplish said purpose in an expeditious and perfect manner, and at a minimum cost of manual labor; and to that end my invention consists, essentially, in an apparatus comprising a tubular holder for embracing the body of the candle, a die at one end of said holder, and a plunger at the opposite end of the same, whereby the candle is compressed endwise between said die and plunger, which impart the final shape and finish to the ends of the candle, and at the same time expand the candle circumferentially in the tubular holder, which straightens, smoothes, and finishes the exterior of the body of the candle; and the invention also consists in certain auxiliary devices connected with the aforesaid apparatus, as hereinafter more fully described,and specifically set forth in the claims.

A represents the frame of the apparatus, consisting, essentially, of a metal block or wall secured,preferably,in anzupright position on a suitable table or work-bench. The front of said frame (which is the side presented in Fig. 2 of the drawings) is provided with a mortise or recess, r, in which is seated renlovably a die, a, secured therein by a setscrew, 8, as shown in Fig. l of the drawings. The inner face of this die may be of any configuration according to the finish desired on the foot or bottom portion of the body of the candle; but I prefer to taper and corrugate it longitudinally, as shown, as such a form on the candle adapts it to be applied to different sized candlesticks and affords a secure hold for the candle. At the inner end of the die a is a die, a, seated in a recess, a, in the frame A, and adapted to enter the die a.

To the die 0 is attached a plunger-rod, j, which projects through the back of the frame A, and is provided at its rear end with a knob or suitable handle, f, against which to apply the pressure or stroke required to force the die a forward into the die a. Aspring, g, interposed between the knob f and back of the frame yieldingly retains the plunger and its die 0 in their normal positions.

In the opposite end of the holder 6 slides a plunger, d, the inner end of which carries a die, e, which may be either integral with the plunger, as shown, or consist of a separate piece attached to the plunger. The die e is concave, to produce the usual taper on the top of the candle. The plunger may be either driven in or forced in by a lever, Z, as represented in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

The operation of the described apparatus is as follows: The holder b being removed from the frame A, the candle is introduced into the said holder, then the holder is placed endwise against the frame A and held in position between the guide h and gate 0', then the plunger d is forced into the holder to press the ends of the candle into the dies a and e and expand the candle circumferentially in the holder, thereby imparting the final shape alii fd finish to the candle. Then the gate z is raised, the holder 1) withdrawn from the frame A, and if the candle adheres to the die it it is forced out of the same by pressing inward the plungerf, which,'by means Of-thedie pushes the candle out of the die a;
