Description
Jan. 24, 1967 I w. M. PUTO, JR. 3,299,587
FLASHING Filed Feb. 26, 1964 INVENTOR.
WALTER IVLPUTQJr 3,299,587 Patented Jan. 24, 1967 3,299,587 FLASHING Walter M. Puto, Jun, 1035 NE. 127th St, North Miami, Fla. 33161 Filed Feb. 26, 1964, Ser. No. 347,539 1 Claim. (Cl. 5258) This invention relates to roof structures but is more particularly directed to flashings.
A principal object of the present invention is to provide a flashing for a building which may be secured to the facing of the building thereby preventing high winds from being able to tear the flashing from the building as occurs with the conventional flashing.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a flashing with means for receiving a fastening member properly caulked for rendering a roof watertight under all conditions of winds and rain.
A still further object of the present invention is to provide a flashing with a plurality of cup shaped fastener receiving members attached thereto whereby the flashing may be fastened to the roof facing and the cup shaped members properly caulked.
With these and other objects in view, the invention Will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawing but may be changed or modified so long as such changes or modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claim.
In the drawing:
FIGURE 1 is a cross sectional view of a roof structure showing a flashing constructed and mounted thereon in accordance with my invention.
FIGURE 2 is a front elevational view of my flashing before being mounted on a roof.
FIGURE 3 is a bottom plan view thereof.
FIGURE 4 is a cross sectional view taken along the line 44 of FIGURE 2.
FIGURE 5 is a perspective view of my cup shaped fastener receiving member shown prior to being attached to the flashing.
Referring to the drawing wherein like numerals are' used to designate similar parts throughout the several views the numeral refers to a flashing constructed of elongated sheet metal in accordance with my invention consisting of a roof engaging portion 11 and a facia portion 12 joined by an arcuate portion 13, the arcuate portion extending upwardly of the roof engaging portion and 'bent as at 14 at substantially greater than right angle. By means of this construction the facia portion 12 will lie in a plane that is approximately right angle to a plane extending through the roof engaging portion 11. At the lower portion of the facia portion 12 is a drip lip portion 15 extending in an outwardly direction so that when mounted on a building as shown by FIGURE 1, any rain or moisture collecting on the outer surface of the facia portion 12 will be directed by the drip lip portion 15 away from the front wall 31 of the building 30.
The facia portion 12 of my flashing 10 is provided with a plurality of equally spaced and aligned bores 16 over each of which is mounted a fastener receiving member 17. The fastener receiving member 17 which is spot Welded or otherwise secured to the inner surface of the 'facia portion 12 comprises a base member 18 in which there is an opening 19 for a fastener to extend therethrough with side walls 20 extending along the edges of the base member 18 at substantially right angle thereto to form an open top receptacle. Along two of the sides 20 extend flange members 21 which are welded or otherwise secured to the inner surface of the facia portion 12 with the openings 16 and 19 in axial alignment with each other.
J ust as in the construction of a conventional roof, the flashing 10 is placed on a roof 23 and nailed thereon by roofing nails 24 after which felt 25 is laid thereon and affixed to the roof 23 in the usual manner. On the felt 25 there is provided hot tar for bonding asphalt roofing paper and gravel 26 thereto.
With the flashing 10 in place on the roof 23 as shown by FIGURE 1, the fastener receiving members 17 will bear against the front wall 31 of the building 30. A nail 27 or similar fastener is inserted through the opening 16 in the flashing 10, through the opening 19 in the fastener receiving member 17 and hammered into the front Wall 31 to secure the facia member 12 of the flashing 10 to the front wall 31. Then a shot of caulking compound 22 is directed into the bores 16 to fill the chamber formed by the fastener receiving members 17 thereby preventing moisture from gaining access to the nail 27 on the hole made by the nail in the Wall 31. Now, if the high winds, squalls or even hurricane winds hurl themselves against my flashing 12 and exert their devasting forces against and behind the facia portion 12, the nails 27 will prevent the facia portion 12 from being pulled away from the front wall 31 of the building 30.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
A flashing for building structures comprising a substantially horizontally disposed roof engaging portion, a facia portion lying at substantially right angle thereto, an arcuate portion joining said facia portion and said roof engaging portion, said arcuate portion extending upwardly of said roof engaging portion, said facia portion having a plurality of aligned bores and a plurality of fastener receiving means secured to the inner surface of said facia portion, each of said fastener receiving means having a Wall portion in spaced relation to said inner surface of said facia portion and an opening in said wall portion smaller than said bores receiving a fastening member therethrough for securing said facia portion to said building structure, side Walls extending from said well portion and fastened to said inner surface of said facia por tion forming a chamber receiving caulking compound for preventing the ingress of moisture therein.
