Description

(No Model.) I
' A.. P. STBWARD.
I PORTABLE STOVB AND OVEN. No. 329,783.y Patented Nov. 3, 1885.,
- UNITED STATES PATENT OEEicE@ ARTHUR l. STEWARD, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
PORTABLE sTovE AND ovEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 329,783, dated November 3, 1885.
Application filed April 29, v1895. Serial No. 163,827. (No model.)
y portable combined stoves and ovens, and is designed for use in ldirect connection with an ordinary cooking-stove, or independently of said cooking-stove, in connection with either the chimney or the stove-pipe of said cookingstove in the usual way, or out of doors as a camp-stove.
My invention consists in certain features hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims. l
Figure 1 is a vertical central section of the portable combined stove and oven. Fig. 2 is a view of the portable combined stove and oven in perspective. Fig. 3 is a view in perspectiveof the double damper.
A isthe portable combined stove and oven provided with the draft-opening m and the pot-holes f and'g.
The heating chamber or oven E is provided with double walls c and d on four sides thereof, which walls form the flue-space b. Said flue-space has two escape-openings, h and j,
and is deepened or enlarged at a point above' the oven to form the combustion-chamber a.
The two escape-openings hand j are to per` opening h there is a double damper, C, con
sisting of two plates, k and Z, connected by a portion of the handle n. The plate k is of slightly greater height than the flue-space beneath vthe oven, extends transversely across said nue-'space from side to side, and is at right angles to the other plate, Z, which is of sufficientsize to coverthe opening h. Said double damper slides on the bottom of the lower fluespace, and when its handle is pushed in untill the upper edge of the plate k strikes against the inner upright wall of that portion ,of the flue-space b which is between the opening h andthe exit the said flue-space is closed by said plate, while at the same time the plate Z is moved out of coincidence with the opening h, and thus permits the products of combustion to pass through said opening on either sideof that part of the handle n which connects said plates; or, if said double damper be pulled out until the plate k shall be in Contact with the outer upright wall of that portion of the nue-space which is between the opening h and the exit j, there will be an unobstructed passage through the entire nue-space from vthe combustion-,chamber a to the exit j, while at the same time the plate Z will coincide with the opening h and said opening will then be closed. Y l
When it is desired to use the portable stove in connection with the ordinary cooking'stove, the said portable stove is placed thereon, and the opening'h made to coincide with one of its pot holes. The air tov support combustion enters through the draft-opening m, and the products of combustion escape through the due-'space b into the ordinary cookingstovc by means of the escape-opening 71J and the pothole t of said cooking-stove. At this time the double damper C is pushed in until its plate 7c closes that portion of the flue-space between the opening h and the exit j when the plate Z is out of coincidence with the opening h, and the products of combustion, being prevented by the plat-e k from continuing their course from the combustion-chamber a` around vthe oven, escape through the opening h and the pot-hole t of the cooking-stove into the stove; but when it is desired to use the portable stove independently of the ordinary cookingstove the damper C is pulled out until its plate k comes in contact with the outer upright wall of that portionv of the flue-space which isbetween the opening h and the exit j, when there will be an unobstructed passage through the entire length of the fine-space, and the. opening h being closedl by the plate Z of the damper C, the products of combustion will pass from the 'combustion-chamber a through the ,fluespace b around the heating-chamber and escape through the exit j, by means of a pipe, into the chimney or stove-pipe of the cookingstove, it' used indoors,'or into the open air if used outdoors.
Having thus-fully described my invention, what I claim asmy invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A portable .stove which consists of an IOO,
oven `having double walls which forni a flucspace around the same, said liuc-space being enlarged 0r deepened at a point above the oven to form a combustioli-chamber, and provided with an escape-orifice through the lower outer wall of the said oven, substantially as described.
2. A portable stove which consists of au oven having double walls which form a fluespaee around the same, said liuc-space being enlarged or deepened at a point above the oven to form a combustion-chamber, and provided with one escape-orilice through the lower outer Wall of the said oven, and with' another at the end thereof farthest from the combustion chamber, substantially as described.
3. The coinbnatouof the oven E, having the surrounding flues b and the escape-openings h andj, with the damper C, located in the flueb below the oven, and having the plates la and Z, for preventing the escape of the products of combustion through either of said openings, as desired, substantially as described.
