Specification of Letters Patent No. 82,968, dated July 30, 1861.

Be it known that I, Isaac S. SoHUYLsn, 01. the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Cotton Picker or Harvester; and I do hereby de clare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of my invention, taken in the line 1, Fig. 2. The object of this invention is to obtain a simple and portable device for manual operation which may be employed for expo ditiousl y picking or harvesting cotton.

The invention consists in the employment or use of two elastic endless belts placed within a suitable case, and arranged as hereinafter described, to effect the desired result.

To enable those skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention I will pr ceed to describe it.

A. represents a case, which may be made of wood or sheet metal, the latter material would probably be preferable. This case may be of curved form as shown clearly in Fig. 1, and within the case there are placed two endless belt-s B. 0., one B. being directly over the other C. The belt B. passes around a small pulley a, at'the front part of the case and around a large pulley Z), at the back part of the case. The belt C. passes around two small pulleys e (4*, of equal diai'neter, but the belt C. is shorter than 13. and both of the belts at their outer parts are exposed at the front end of the case A. at its under side. The two belts run in contact, motion being communicated to C. from B. and the latter being moved by a crank attached to the axis of pulley b.

The case A. is of L-form andthe large pulley b, of belt B. is directly over the upright or discharge end of the case. The belts B. C. are elastic but are stretched quite tautly over their respective pulleys. The belts move in the direction indicated by the arrows, and by applying the outer ends of the belts to the cotton bolls, the cotton will be drawn between the belts and discharged from the inner end of the case, as indicated in red in Fig. 1. The belts are sutficiently taut to insure their movement in the direction indicated when the pulley 7), is turned.

The case A. is held by the operator with one hand, and the crank of pulley I), is turned with the other, while the outer end of the case is applied to the cotton bolls on the plants. The cotton is drawn from the bolls with the greatest facility and is deposited in a proper bag or receptacle attached to the inner side of the case.

In order to prevent the cotton being carried around the inner pulleys 7), (4*, guard plates 0, are placed within the case with their outer ends bearing against the belts as shown clearly in Fig. 1.

I am aware that endless belts have been employed provided with teeth or pickers for picking cotton, the belts being placed within a case but arranged in an entirely different way from the plan herein shown and de scribed. I do not claim therefore the employment or use of an endless toothed belt; but,

I do claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

The combination of the two endless belts B. C. placed within a suitable case A. and arranged for joint operation substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
