F. KRAEMER.
PIANO STOOL.
Patented Nov. 3, 1885.
UNITED STATES` FELIX KRAEMER, oF NEW YORK, N. Y., AssIGNoR To T. n. KRAEMER a oo., oF SAME PLACE.
PIANO=STOOL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of lLetters Patent No. 329,654. dated November 3, 1885.
Application filed May 2l, 1885.
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FELIX KRAEMER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piano-Stools, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to piano-stools of that class in which the seat is made vertically adjustable in two pillars; and the invention consists of a piano-stool the seat of which is supported by posts and spring-pawls passing through slots of the posts on ratchets ot' the upright pillars ofthe supporting-frame. The upright pillars are connected by a transverse brace-piece having an opening and foot-rest to hold the frainein position while the seat is adjusted to a greater or less height in the pillars. The spring-pawls are withdrawn by rods passing through the frame of the seat, said rods having exterior buttons and handles.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l represents a vertical' longitudinal section of my improved piano-stool, and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section ot' the same. Figs. 3 and 4 are a detail vertical section and an end view of the pawl-and-ratchet device for locking the posts of the seat to the pillars of the supportingframe; and Figs. 5 and 6 are detail horizontal sections through the pillars ou lines fr x and y y, Fig. l.
Similar letters o't' reference indicate corresponding parts. f
Referring to the drawings, A A represent the upright hollow pillars ol' the supportingframe of my improved piano-stool, which pillars are connected by a transverse brace-piece, B. The brace-piece Bis provided at its middle portion with an opening, b, and a round bar or foot-rest, C, below said opening. By placing the foot on the foot-rest C the supporting-frame is held rigidly in position on the floor for adjusting the seat D. The seat D is provided with iixed posts D D', that are guided in the pillars A Ayand adjusted higher or lower in the same by means of springpressed pawls E E, which are fulcrurned to ears d d of the posts and extended through slots d of the pillars, so as to engage fixed ratchets e e, contained in slots et of the pillars A A. The pawls E E inove up and down in longitudinal recesses c e at the inner side of Serial No. 166,234. (No model.)
the pillars, their upper ends being connected to horizontally-guided rods f f, which are passed through holes of the frame of the seat D, and are provided with exterior handles or buttons, f', that are pulled in outward direction for withdrawing the pawls E E from the ratchets e e when it is desired to lower the seat D.
For raising the seat, it is not necessary to pull the buttonsff, as the spring-pawls will readily pass over the ratchet-teeth. For lowering the seat, however, the pawls E have to disengage the teeth ot' the ratchets by pulling the buttons in outward direction until the pawls clear the teeth of the ratchets, after which the posts ot' the seat can be readily lowered in the pillars.
For adjusting the seat to the proper height, the foot is placed on the foot-rest C and the seat taken hold of and pulled in upward direction till raised to the proper height.
For lowering the seat, the buttons are ypulled in outward direction until the pawls release the ratchets of the pillars, upon which the posts can slide down into the pillars.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-e The combination of a frame having hollow supportiiig-pillars provided with elongated slots on their inner faces, with interior recesses opposite said slots.and with ears above said slots, ratehets fixed in said recesses, a seat provided with posts which slide 1n said hollow pillars, said posts being provided with transverse slots, angular pawls or levers pivoted to said ears, the lower ends of which pass through slots of the. pillars and of the posts and take into the fixed ratchets, horizontal guide-rods passing through the seat-frame and connected at their inner ends to said pawls, and springs interposed between said pawls and seat-frame, substantially as described.v I
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed niy naine in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FELIX KRAEMER.
