United States Patent 3,295,143 GLARE SHEELD Goldie Hoffman, 2259 S. 17th St, Philadelphia. Pa. 19103 Filed Nov. 1, 1965, Ser. No. 595,311 (Ilaims. (Cl. 2-42) This invention relates to glare shields and more particularly to an improved glare shield which is easy to manufacture and versatile in use.
The glare shield of the present invention may be worn in any of a variety of positions. The shield is rotatable about its connection with a headband. The glare shield is sufficiently large to protect the wearers eyes from the sun and also to serve as a wind shield. When the invention is used to shield the wind from the wearers face, the shield sufficiently encompasses the wearers ears to also protect them from the wind.
The headband upon which the glare shield is mounted is preferably made of plastic and performs the function of maintaining the shield upon the wearers head. The band is adapted to grip the wearers head with a pressure which is sufficient to maintain the shield in its desired position.
It is an obiect of the present invention to provide a glare shield which is easy to manufacture and has a low cost of manufacture.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a glare shield which can also be easily adapted to perform the function of a wind shield.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a glare shield which is easily pivotally moved to any desired position.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a glare shield which also serves to protect the ears of the wearer.
it is another obiect of the present invention to provide a glare shield which is sufficiently large to adequately function as either a glare shield or a wind shield.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a glare shield which has a simple yet highly effective means of attachment to the wearers head.
It is another object of the present invention to provide a band member and an elastic cord member riveted to a shield, which shield is rotatable with respect to the band and cord.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
For the purpose of illustrating the invention, there is shown in the drawings a form which is presently preferred; it being understood, however, that this invention is not limited to the precise arrangements and instrumentalities shown.
FIGURE 1 is a perspective view of the glare shield of the present invention.
FIGURE 2 is a section view of the glare shield of the present invention.
FIGURE 3 is a section view of the glare shield of the present invention.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein like numerals refer to like elements, there is shown in FIGURES 13 a glare shield generally designated by the numeral 10.
The glare shield is made of a glare resistant material 12 and is preferably flexible. A band 14 is attached to the upper portion of the glare shield 10. The band 14 is preferably composed of plastic or light material and is resilient and flexible. The ends 16 of the band 14 are biased inwardly towards each other as clearly seen in FIGURE 2. The inwardly biased ends 16 of the band provide a positive retaining means for the glare shield on the head of the wearer. A band 14 is designed to provide a slight pressure on the head of the wearer which is sufficient to retain the glare shield without discomforting the wearer.
The band 14 is connected at its ends 16 to the glare Patented Jan. 3, 1967 "ice shield 10 by means of rivets 18. The band is connected to the inside of the glare shield 10. The rivets 18 provide a rotatable connection for the glare shield 16 relative to the band 14.
An elastic cord 29 is also connected by means of rivets 13 to the glare shield 10. The elastic cord 20 has washer members 22 connected at its ends. The washer members 22 provide the connection between the cord Zll and the rivets 13. Since the washer members 29 are between the ends 16 of the band 14, they provide a surface against which the band 14 may bear. The washers 22 are made out of metal and therefore provide a smooth surface against which the ends 18 of the band 14 are in contact. Thus, the band 14 may be rotated without causing wear to any part of the glare shield.
The elastic cord 20 is adapted to engage the rear portion of the wearers head and thereby provide further attachment means for the glare shield 10. Thus, the band 14 and the cord 20 cooperate to retain the glare shield 10 on the wearers head.
The glare shield 10 is provided with upwardly extending portions 24 which are adapted to protect the ears of the wearer. The periphery of the glare shield 10 slopes downward from the ear protectors 24 as indicated by 26 and 28 in FIGURE 1. The slope 26 is gradual and the top of the glare shield 16 is sufficiently high to fully protect the wearers eyes from glare. The sloping peripheral portion 28 of the glare shield 19 is arcuate in shape and terminates in a peripherally upwardly extending nose protecting portion 3%. The sloping portion 30 is provided so that the wearers nose will be fully protected from wind when the shield is used as a wind shield and yet the wearer may breathe freely.
The shield may be worn as a glare shield in which case the shield 16 will be rotated in a clockwise direction with respect to the rivet 13 shown in FIGURE 1. The glare shield may be rotated to any desired position which will be most comfortable to the wearer. Should the wearer decide to utilize the shield as a wind shield, the shield may be rotated to a position substantially as shown in FIGURE 1. The shield will then serve to prevent wind and debris carried by the wind from coming into contact with the face of the wearer. The wind shield will still function to prevent glare from annoying the wearers eyes.
It is readily seen that the face shield of this invention is easy to use and elfective in operation. The present invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit or essential attributes thereof and, accordingly, reference should be made to the appended claims, rather than to the foregoing specification as indicating the scope of the invention.
1 claim:
1. A shield having a headband, said headband rotatably connected to said shield, an elastic cord member, said elastic cord member having washer members at its ends, said elastic cord member connected to said shield, rivets connecting the ends of said headband and said cord to said shield, said washer members on said cord being between said headband and said shield to provide a surface upon which the shield can rotate with respect to said headband.
2. A shield as set forth in claim 1 having upwardly extending portions for protecting the ears of the wearer.
3. A shield as set forth in claim 1 being rotatable to various positions, said shield in one of said various positions being a glare shield, and said shield in another of said various positions being a wind shield.
4. A shield as set forth in claim 1 wherein said band member is connected to said shield at its ends, the ends of said band member being resiliently biased towards each other.

A shield having a plastic headband, said headband rotatably connected to said shield, an elastic cord member, said elastic cord member having Washer members at its ends, said ends being rotatably connected to said shield, rivets connecting the ends of said headband and said cord to said shield at locations adjacent upper corners of the shield, said shield being rotatable to various positions, said shield in one of said various positions being a glare shield, and said shield is another of said various posiand said shield having a uniform thickness at all loca tions and being unsupported at its peripheral edges.

Claims (1)
1. A SHIELD HAVING A HEADBAND, SAID HEADBAND ROTATABLY CONNECTED TO SAID SHIELD, AN ELASTIC CORD MEMBER, SAID ELASTIC CORD MEMBER HAVING WASHER MEMBERS AT ITS ENDS, SAID ELASTIC CORD MEMBER CONNECTED TO SAID SHIELD, RIVETS CONNECTING THE ENDS OF SAID HEADBAND AND SAID CORD TO SAID SHIELD, SAID WASHER MEMBERS ON SAID CORD BEING BETWEEN SAID HEADBAND AND SAID SHIELD TO PROVIDE A SURFACE UPON WHICH THE SHIELD CAN ROTATE WITH RESPECT TO SAID HEADBAND.
