.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MATTHIAS BROCK, of Boston, county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Machines for Making Comb Tack-Strips, of which thefollo-wing description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its obj ect to facilitate and cheapen the production of comb tackstrips employed in boot and shoe and other work.
In the manufacture of comb tack-strips as now commonly practiced, a metal strip of greater or less width, according to the length of tack desired,is subjected to the action of a punch and die that cut one edge of the strip to leave teeth extending like the teeth of a comb, but farther apart, and the heads are produced either by hanging or upsetting the other edge of the strip. In accordance with my invention a metal strip, preferably flanged at both edges, is placed in a guide, through which it is fed intermittingly, and in its movement is passed between a punch and die which have a movement of oscillation, so that the punch, of less width than the strip, at one descent cuts through the stripat one angle and at the next descent at an -opposite angle, the alternate cuts being so made as to form two comb tackstrips with but the minimum of waste.
My invention consists, essentially, in the combination, with a strip-guide and feeding mechanism, of a'punch and die, the punch cutting through the strip between its edges alternately at opposite angles, as will be described.

The frame-work A, of suitable shape to sustain the working part-s, has suitable boxes, in which is mounted the main shaft B, having attached to it atoothed gear, B', a cani, C, and
a head or disk, D, provided with a crank-pin, d', the latter entering a slot, d2, in a crosshead, d, adapted to be reciprocated vertically in guides di The cross-head d has a socket, d5, in which is entered loosely a pin, e, thelatter', as herein shown,having an annulargroove, 2, (see Fig. 3,) which 'is entered by two pins, 3 3, (see Fig. 2,) the said rod being free to turn in, but being compelled to rise and fall with, the cross-head. The lower end of the pin e, provided with a screw-thread, (see Fig. 3,) is screwed into a nut, 40, placed in the punchcarrier el, to the lower end of which, by suitable bolts, is attached the punch f, the punchcarrier e2 being fitted to slide vertically in guideways g, forming part of an oscillating head, gf, the circular hub g2 of which is fitted into a bearing made in the frame A, a flange, 4, on the oscillating head resting on the seat or shoulder 5 of the frame-work, and being kept on the said seat by a washer,6,and screws 7. The head or its hub is provided atits center with a die-opening, 1', (shown in top View, Fig. 6,) its slot being arranged directly under and so as to be entered by the punch in its descent, the punch and die always registering one with the other. The hub above the top of the die is cut away, as at 8, to permit the head to oscillate when the metal plate or strip S is placed above the die and is being cut, as will be described. The gear B engages a gear, F, fast on a cam hub, h, mounted on a stud, 7L', having a cam-groove, h2, to receive a rollerpin, h3, 'on an arm, h4, of a rock-shaft, h5, having its bearing at h, the said rock-shaft having a second arm, hl, slotted at 9, and provided with an adjustable bolt, 10, having a block, 12, that enters the slot 13 in the arm 1-1 of the head, oscillation of the head g by the said rock-shaft causing the punch and die to be turned at each alternate descent of the punch, first a little to the right and then a little to the left, so that the punch at each alternate descent cuts through the stripS at opposite angles, making successive cuts, as shown at Fig. 5 by the figures 16 17 1819, 85e., those 16 and 18 being at one angle, whilc 17 and 19 are in a different angle, the stock or metal left between the punch constituting shanks for the two comb lack-strips.
The strip S to be punched, as described, for the formation of two comb tack-strips will preferably have edge flanges, as shown in Fig. 7. wherein the strip is represented in section. The strip S is placed between the anges 22 23vof the feed-box m,mounted on suitable horizontal guideways of the frame, and provided with a pin, m', which is engaged by a lever, mi, actuated by the camdisk C. The feed-box hasapawl, m3, acted upon byaspring, m4, which normally keeps the free end of the pawl in engagement with suitable teeth or notches cut in the flanges of the metal strip, the box and pawl constituting the chief elements of the feeding mechanism. The strip S 1s fed forward one step at each forward move'- ment of the box m, and while the punch holds the strip the box is moved backward,and'with 1t the pawl,to engage a new tooth of the strip. The extent of oscillation of the punch and die may be altered by adjusting the bolt 10 in the slot-s 9 and 13. The flanges of the strip S are notched to enable the pawl to engage the said notches.
I do not desire to limit my invention to the exact feeding mechanism shown, nor to the exact means shown to oscillate the punch and die.
I claim- 1. In a machine for forming comb tackstrips7 a-guide for thestrip, combined with the oscillating head and the punch and die therein, substantially as described.
2. The shaft B, the loosely-connected punchcarrier and punch actuated by it, and the head provided with the guideway for the punchcarrier and the die, combined with means, substantially as described, to oscillate the head in one and then in the opposite direction, to punch through the nail-strip at different angles to its longitudinal center, snbstantiall y las described.
