SPECIFICA'I'ION orming part of Letters Patent No. 329,243, dated Qctober 27, 1885. Application filed August 10, 1885. Serial No. 174,063. (No model.)

Be it known that I, ORVILLE W. VAN DEN BURGH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schuylerville, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehiole- Body Holders or J acks,of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to what I designate as a body-tumbler forlight vehicles. It is a machine to be used principally in the paintshop of carriage-factories, and is so constructed that a light body may be secured to it, and then said body made to change its relative position to the painter, whereby he is onabled to work with greater oase and facility than when the body is simply plaeed upon a trestle.
In the accompanying drawings, which make a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side view, and Fig. 2an end view, of my invention.
In the figures, A represents a sill, into which are mortised at each end the cross bars or sills B B. These parts are firmly braced together, not only by the braces a a, but by similar horizontal ones, (marked a a.)
0 O represent two standards, which are framed into the cross-sills B B, and which carry in suitable bearings in their upper ends the cross-shaft O.
D represents a gear-wheel, which has a hearing in one of the standards 0, and E is a smaller wheel, which gears into wheel D, said wheel E being secured upon one end of the shaft G.
F represents a detent connected by loops or staples to one end of the standards, and which is pressed upward by a spring, 0, and capable or adapted to be pressed downward by means of the levers b b. The upper end of this detent is adapted to enter between the teeth of the gear-wheel D and retain it at any desired point in its rotation. It Will be seen that the lever G is connected to the spring 0.
The shaft C is provided at its center with a=bolster, I, said bolster being secured to the shaft by means of a bolt, J, and a levernut, d.
K K represent two set-screws, which pass through the shaft, and which are intended to steady and brace the bolster. Guidesl l are secured uponthe shaft G to assist in keeping the body in place.
H represents the body to be operated upon. It is taken green from the carpenters shop and placed upon this machine in the paintshop. The body is first placed upon the bolster I and is there seoured either by screws or clamps which pass through its botton1. It is evident that this device may be used for other purposes than holding light vehicle-bodies I find that I can use it with equal result-s for running-gears. The letter Findcates abent iron bar secured between the shaft and the bolster and having the bolt J passing through it. on the bottom of the body and serve to steady the same.
