BERNARD. ATURMENNE PAUL A. RAICHE BK KM P/QAh M ATTORNEY United States l atent O 3,292,186 HAIR WASHING AND TINTING UNIT Bernard A. Turmenne, 407 Montello St., and Paul A. Raziche, 225 Webster St., both of Lewiston, Maine 04 40 Filed June 29, 1964, Ser. No. 378,776 9 Claims. (Cl. 4-159) This invention relates to a hair washing and tinting unit.
The invention has for an object to provide a novel and improved hair washing and tinting unit characterized by novel structure enabling a person to be comfortably seated while having her hair washed or tinted, and wherein the persons hair to be worked on is accessible to an operator standing behind the person in a natural, upright position.
The invention has for another object to provide a novel and improved hair washing and tinting unit of the character specified which is adjustable vertically relative to a chair so as to accommodate persons of different heights.
A further object of the invention is to provide a novel and improved portable hair washing and tinting unit of the character specified which may be maneuvered into different positions on the floor.
With these general objects in view and such others as may hereinafter appear, the invention consists in the hair washing and tinting unit and in the various structures, arrangements and combinations of parts hereinafter described and particularly defined in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of a hair washing and tinting unit embodying the present invention shown attached to a chair;
FIG. 2 is a vertical cross section of the same;
FIG. 3 is a perspective detail view of adjusting mechanism shown in FIG. 2;
FIG. 4 is a front elevation of the unit;
FIG. 5 is a view as seen from the rear; and
FIG. 6 is a perspective view of the unit showing the same detached from the chair.
In general, the present invention contemplates a novel and improved hair washing and tinting unit adapted for attachment to a chair or other support. The illustrated unit includes a hood portion and a sink portion, the hood portion having a front opening provided with neck rest for supporting a persons head within the hood while in a comfortably seated position in the chair. The hood is also provided with a rear opening whereby the operator may work on the persons hair while standing behind the person in a natural, upright position. Provision is also made for mounting a water spray unit within the hood, and a foot operated valve leaves both hands of the operator free to work on the persons hair. The present hair washing and tinting unit is provided with flexible water supply hoses and a flexible drain hose to permit the unit to be maneuvered to different positions. The unit is also adjustably mounted on the chair or other support to ac commodate persons of different heights.
Referring now to the drawings, the illustrated hair washing and tinting unit comprises in general a hood or canopy portion 10 and a sink portion 12 adjustably attached to the back of a chair 14. The hood portion 10 is provided with a front opening 16 having a neck rest portion 18 arranged to support a persons head within the hood while seated in the chair. The hood 10 is also provided with a rear opening 20 through which the persons hair is accessible to the operator while standing behind the person in a naturalfiupright position.
As herein shown, the hood portion 10 comprises the upper half of an oval shaped casing, the lower half 22 of which encloses the sink 12. The upper or open end of 3,292,186 Patented Dec. 20, 1966 ice the sink is substantially flush with the lower portion of the rear opening 20. The lower wall of the sink is provided with a drain, indicated generally at 24, which may be connected to an elongated flexible hose 26, the other end of which may be connected to the drain pipe in the building. The upper wall of the hood portion 10 is provided with a curved perforated water spray pipe 28 which has a plug 30 at one end and is connected at its other end by a flexible pipe or hose 32 which leads to the outlet of a mixing valve indicated generally at 34. The mixing valve inlet is connected to flexible elongated hot and cold water hoses 36, 38, respectively, which may be connected at their other ends to supply pipes in the building. The mixing valve 34 may be provided with conventional means for adjusting the amounts of cold and hot water entering the mixing valve to control the temperature of the water.
As shown in FIG. 2, the mixing valve 34 is provided with a valve lever 40 connected by a link 42 to a pivotally mounted foot pedal 44 which is urged upwardly against a stop 46 by a coil spring 48 arranged to maintain the valve in a normally closed position. Thus, the operator may control the spray of the water by foot leaving both hands free to Work on the persons hair. The hood portion 10 may comprise a transparent material to enable the operator to view the person through the top of the hood. The illustrated supporting and adjusting mechanism includes a rod 56) attached to the front of the casing 22 and which is slidingly engaged in an opening in an adapter 52 secured to the back of the chair 14. The adjustable to the casing 22. One end of the shaft is provided with a worm gear 61 in meshing engagement with a worm 62 fast on a shaft 64 arranged at right angles to the shaft 53.
The shaft 64 may be supported in suitable bearings attached to the casing 22 and a handle 66 secured to the shaft 64 is used for manually adjusting the hair washing and tinting unit relative to the chair to accommodate persons of different heights. It will be apparent that the unit may be adjustably supported on a floor base independently of the chair and adapted to be moved into operative position to the back of a chair in which a person is seated.
From the above description it will be seen that the present hair washing and tinting unit provides a practical and convenient structure affording comfort for the person having her hair washed by virtue of the adjustability of the unit relative to the chair, and enabling the operator to stand behind the person in a natural, upright position by reason of the opening in the back of the unit. The provision of a portable unit provided with a sink and a water supply permits the unit to be moved to any con venient position in the room by virtue of the flexible water supply and drainage connection.
While the preferred embodiment of the invention has been herein illustrated and described, it will be understood that the invention may be embodied in other forms within the scope of the following claims.
